Not every ship destroyed nets you an increase, as there is a timer on how often you may gain in security status (someone please correct me if I'm wrong on this).

In general, ships with a higher bounty are worth greater security status increases, so if you're doing higher level missions and taking out battleships, you're going to gain security status faster than doing low level missions. With that in mind, a person who casually runs Lv 4 missions or kills belt rats in lowsec/nullsec systems will gain much faster than a player who grinds Lv 1 missions all day long.

You should also train the skill Fast Talk if you are concerned about your security status, as each level of this skill improves the rate of gain for each qualified kill.

The kill worth most per session change or within 15(?) minutes will count towards security status increase; or at least that's how it used to be, although I'm not entirely sure on the 15 minutes, might be 20. The quickest way to get rid of negative security status is therefore to find 2-3 adjacent 0.0 systems, kill a BS spawn, jump to the neighboring system, kill a BS spawn, rinse and repeat.
