Can someone who was playing EVE from day one say how was it? What would be shocking for me if I were to play 2003 eve now? I've heard there were no pods. I'm interested in stuff like that. "The weirdnes of the early days" ;) Please share!

Imagine an EvE world with no hisec.

Course, that's just what I hear, too. I wasn't around in '03. I did make a trial in '04, I think, but I didn't keep playing. Just didn't interest me at the time Laughing

The last 2 or 3 EON mags have had some nice articles of the old timers talking about how it used to be. Back in the days before cap ships, and t2 ships. When there were no pos's or outposts. The days before warp to 0, and when concord could not only be tanked, but wiped out. Back when space was so empty, you could live where you wouldn't see another player for days or weeks.

Personally, I have only been around since early 05, and I remember the days before the missile change, when they hit all size targets for the same dmg, but were way slower. I miss those missiles.

Your missles hit roids, the npc rats missles went through them.

For a while no npc rats in most high sec belts iirc.

Npc agents bought and sold everything.

No cruisers, only frigs till people put together enough iskies.

No warp to zero.

No High Sec???? News to me. Laughing

Very few people. 5k was a big day.

Missles and torps rocked. Frigs blasting BS with cruise missles till the cry babies got their way. "my bs got ganked by frigs with cruise. whaaaa." Rolling Eyes

Dunno. Lots different. Agents didn't work for one. Razz

Not much content. Race to 0.0 and get a station. That was fun.

If there was no pos warfare how was the 0.0 held? And what was the purpose if you could not mine high end moons?

Also what happened when your ship died? Was there pods at the beginning?

Thx

There was no moon mining, since there was no t2, there was no need. There was always pods, iirc.

0.0 had the good ores, back when zyd and mega only came from 0.0, and no where else. Back before the drone regions. 0.0 was fought for because it was something you could call your own. And, in the beginning, there was very tough logistics, since there were no super haulers.

It was held by saying 'This bit of space right here is mine' and anyone that disagreed had to fight you until stopped saying it. More or less.

There was no warp to 0 when I started playing either. I've only started in 2006, so that's not really the old days. It's a relatively new change.

You know it seems to me that this concept of 0.0 was nicer? No pos bashing? I mean i only like the fleet ops, preferably roams, i accept the necessity of blob fights, but pos pounding i hate.

When you jumped into a system, you landed at a central jump-in point rather than at the gate. There were no sentry guns at the JIP.

This made it a lot easier to restrict access to a system.

You could fly a bestower through 0.0 without being instantly jumped 'cause not everyone had the hated NBSI policy in place.

Well I'm fast approaching my 3rd Eve Birthday (not with this char) Back in good olde Sept 2005 there where 17k people online, no capitals. The dream of owning a Battleship was almost only a dream. T2 ships where to be drooled over...Empire was boring, Low-sec was very dangerous and 0.0 was the way to fortunes!! Owning a T2 BPO ment " You Won Eve!"....ah...those where the days...

There were a lot of problems back then, BS's being solo pwnmobiles for a start. But sometimes I think less is more. Eve is no longer vast, nothing takes long to find or see or do. There are no surprises right now, the game has settled into a familiar pattern which I don't see changing soon.

I still like the game but keep hoping for a bit of something to spice things up. I'd love to see things like roaming Jove or Angel fleets attacking the unsuspecting. Some randomly spawned events, give us some upredictability and more vastness!

It went like this:

Oh, Jove space? That sounds cool, I'll go that way.

Then, you go on your merry way, only to be lagged out by mines.

Then you were like, Escrow, what is this crap?

And then you stuck cruise missiles on your frigate.

After that you mined Veldspar for 20 hours a day, in the hopes that you could get a battleship.

Then, you got that battleship blown up to said mines, or m0o.

Then, you flew around in your Velator for a week or so.

The end.

The old days... when we pushed our T1 frigates to station. UPHILL BOTH WAYS IN THE SNOW.... you young whippersnappers don't know how good you got it...

The days when you COULD put cruise x4 on a Kessie....

Scorps were the most feared BS's in the game.... remember the "OmniTank" scorp setup?

Going into 0.0 was scarey.. IF you had a Battleship you were considered UBAR....

There was much rejoicing when we cracked the 6K online player barrier.. .

Hitting your MWD while IN warp ment you were at ludicrous speed when you hit that gate camp at 15km.. and your transversal meant that no one could hit or even lock you in the time it took to hit the gate and jump.

It took weeks of mining or mission running to get that first Cruiser.. and oh how tough you thought you were.... for about 10 mins before you were blowed up because you should have known better...

*SHOCK*...Shocked in the old days there was little if any lag.. Shocked

I miss the "old days"...

P.S... being able to "jump" to Jove space and go tooling around in a frigate.. granted there wasn't anything there.. but it was cool to say "I've been to Jove space... and all I got was this lousy T-shirt"

Multiple MWDs stacking....ahh the days of the 3au/s Scorps not in warp :) though it capped you out instantly :P

Edit: also during beta/early release there was no such thing as tracking. All guns hit any target. Man i miss those Tachyons instapoping frigs from *shock horror* 80 KM!!!!!! (that was ultra long range back then.

Yes but then you have the problem of who actually owns the space you're battling over. Quite often you'd dominate an area in your corp/alliance's TZ & then an alliance based in a different TZ would completely take over at night. POS warfare is kinda dull sometimes but it does make sense, and it is better tbh.

Although 0.0 was a much larger, more desolate place back then. You could go on ratting trips for weeks & not see anyone.

2003

Concord were pie weak, you could literaly sit outside 1.0 stations blasting people as they undocked, at the time beta testers 'had' warned ccp this would be the case, but they ignored the issue anyway, probaly costing them a few subs.

At the start, till around the castor expansion when they started to introduce T2 gear and components, making the agents something more usefull than to look at, pretty much all their was to do in the game was either npc to loot, trade/build/mine, or blast the crap out of each other around npc zero zero's for little or no reason (a major event when 30 ships were 'on the move' as it were. Very basic stuff compared to the more complex chains you see today, why im allways amazed when i see other games upcoming in the genre being slated to hell, if only those were around for the first 6 months of eveLaughing

As some have allready pointed out, many game breaking imbalances, no stacking penalties, main ones being dmg mods for a start, double mwd's, insane sheild resistances, think 99%, making just about every ship sheild friendly, even the megathron.

Loads more, old exploits though, can flooding before they changed to a timer, not that it stoped people flooding the area with crap to nail folks on the black screen, aka jump in point camping, in the days before gate to gate and cloak on jumping, now that 'did' cost ccp lots of subs, well they know.

Issues with duped items, when the server hung, if you happen to be stifting items at the time, they would duplicate, obviously the more malicious amoung us just happend to allways have a large ammount of megacyte on standbyRolling Eyes

That being said. hard one to enforce, as many would have done it innocently.

The voiceovers were terrible. Imagine a computer voice saying "warp drive active" - then pretend they did it underwater. That was it.

Also, the noob systems lagged like mad and I could never get past the tutorial...but I eventually somehow escaped to mine plagioclase.

Eve came in a shiny CD box with a shiny CD. It was pretty. Mine was destroyed by some renegade Mr. Clean, but there you go

Instead of three bars for shield and armor and structure of targets, I think there was like some circular looking thing around a ship - I never worked it out before I left.

You had to click different buttons to access your mid-high-lows.

There was a blue radar thingy that I'm not sure was ever useful.

There used to be no destroyers, or battlecruisers, or tech2, or capitals. Freaky.

Missions used to take place outside of deadspaces (cause they didn't exist, if I remember). You'd enter Rens to see Ravens popping angel rats 110+ km off the gate.

Missiles did full damage regardless of sig radius or speed - torps and cruises could instapop frigs.

Jita had asteroid belts Shocked

*shrug* I thought the game was pretty boring back in beta - and now I'm quite happy here
