I just got back into EVE and I'm extremely impressed by the graphics update. All the ships look way better than I could ever have expected. However, when they updated the ships, stations, and jump-gates, they seem to have overlooked the second most looked-at thing in the game: Weapons! Weapon graphics are woefully outdated and really take away from the epicness that eve battles should have.

For example, when you fire your hybrid or projectile cannons, it looks like a giant javelin is impailing the enemy ship and then suddenly disappearing. That's just being lazy. There's no reason for the graphic to go straight through the other ship. Furthermore, the speed of the projectile animation is independent of the distance between the two ships. That means that if you fire from far away your projectile will go reeeeeeeally fast, but if you fire at point blank it'll appear as though your shots are inching towards your enemy and splattering against their hull. Beam weapons look a bit nicer, but they have a problem that the impact glow only shows up if you look at the impact at just the right angle, and even then the impact glow is just a single polygon. Not good at all.

Missile weapons are a bit better. They have nice looking explosions with big shockwaves with passable graphics. The only problem is that they spawn at the center of your ship in spite of the clearly visible missile bays on your ship. Why can't they spawn from your missile bays? Currently when you fire a volley of missiles all you see is one especially bright missile since they're all on top of each other.

Then finally there's the impact placement. This is probably the biggest problem. The current system in place is such that each ship has a set number of points at which projectile shots can hit, probably one for each side. The problem with this is that it ends up that each projectile hits dead on the exact same point every single time. It really does not look good at all. Whenever you watch any kind of ship battle in space or at sea you see all sorts of shots going every which way causing explosions all throughout the ship, which looks absolutely awesome. If the combat log messages are to be held as canon, that's what's supposed to happen in EVE too.

My suggestions:
I understand the impact system in place was chosen for good reason. Having real-time collision detection would take way too much resources for it to be worth it, however, instead of a single point, couldn't you choose planes or semi-spheres on relatively flat or round parts of the ships as impactable areas? Basically it would work the same as it does now but with a slight change. When a gun fires, instead of choosing a point on the enemy ship it chooses one of the enemy ship's planes. The client could then choose a random spot on that plane for each shot to land. This would add a variety of different impact spots while still using the base idea of the current system.

The main problems with missiles are the fact that they all spawn inside your ship instead of in their bays, which really shouldn't be that hard to fix at all, and their impact location. *perhaps* Missiles could target one of the projectile impact locations instead of the center of the enemy ship? It would stop the missiles from having to go inside an enemy ship before the explode, but it would also slightly change game balance, so I'm weary about it.

And finally, projectile weapons just need a facelift. It seems like there wasn't much detail put into them, and computers now are more than capable of handling it.

I think everyone can agree that weapon graphics are the most looked-at graphics next to ships, and that they deserve much more priority than they're getting.

Signed. Please revisit weapon special effects, and engine glows while you are at it. Lovely premium ship models with the engine glow sticking out the sides of the bay is just plain silly.

Yep. For example on railguns I'd like to see a trace colored by the type of ammo, encircled by a fading spiral and a small explosion upon impact.
Artillery should have an impressive muzzle flash, deep sound and lots of debris upon impact.
Etc.

I'll sign for this, I would love to see some improvements on the look of ammo when being fired and also the turrets on the ship scaling with the size of the ship as well.

OMG i just had a great idea for even better effects...

Sure, it can screw up the average ****ty PC, but hey, some people LOVE eye candy :)
Gallente and Minmatar ammunition is stored in Sabots, right?
Imagine having a huge autocannon firing and discarding used sabots into space :D
Same for railguns...Like
*BOOM-psssshhhhh-ding BOOM-shhhhhhh-ding* for railguns and blasters and artillery sabots...
and *RA-dingTA- ding TA-DING TA-DING-PSHHHHHH!* for autocannon sabots :))

I have already opened a similar thread some time ago it concerned the weapon graphics especially the missiles.

My idea was that the missiles should explode at the shield of the ship and not ignore it and detonate in the middle because this really sucks

Don't forget Eye Candies are everything at the beginning, the first impressions are very important for new players.

Another neat addition would be for specific weapons to have spent shell casings or ejected coolant clouds. Say that Projectile guns leave brass shell casings, Hybrids leave little bits of glowing debris, lasers shoot coolant out in glowing clouds and missiles leave broken fins or bits near the target. I can just imagine a trail of brass shell casings from a raiding Vagabond pointing out its orbit of the barge that was just ganked.

all I'm saying, smoke trails for missiles. If I fire off a ton of missiles it should leave lingering clouds of smoke criscrossing the battlefield.

Smoke doesn't appear in space. You ever see the shuttle with smoke coming out it's arse when in space?

I call bs on this one, I went to a game design school for media modeling and animation and it doesn't take 2 years to implement different visual graphics affects, its purely based on polygonal collision points which a modeler with some node name tagging could do and the graphics are nothing more then shaders and sprites which can be assigned to projected paths since its a virtual spline they follow.

Your excuse is weak at best and you just either are under paid or your material artist programmers and modelers need to be fired.
