I'm going to try to keep my responses brief. Quote: Do the evil pirates (people who kill for no reason, or who kill to loot and steal) totally outnumber the righteous protectors in this game? (People who only kill bad people, and usually not for the profit / loot)
There are no good or bad people. What you're talking about is simply the outcome of being viewed by another person's viewpoint. For instance, if you mine a veldspar asteroid, that's one less veldspar asteroid that I can mine for myself. Therefore, in my view, you have in a sense pirated from me. If you put it on the market and make a profit from it by undercutting me, then you've again taken profit that would have been mine. The so called bad-guys are simply guys, struggling for power, just like George Washington did when he lead the fledgling colonial forces against the red coats. Quote: What does this say about people in society? That without the constraints of society they do not see the need for a society's general rules against destruction?
It says that human beings cannot appreciate order without a degree of chaos to judge it by, and that you have never set foot into 0.0. There are many very healthy societies functioning in 0.0 without the artificial constraints that CONCORD provides. They generally set up their own sets of rules, that often times mirror that of the larger Empire society. However, each of these 0.0 mini-societies, and modern day RL societies are only in existence because they have banded together and destroyed many other societies. Also, one could well argue that the pirates are the ones truly alive and enjoying life, and that the carebears are walking zombies. Sometimes you can't appreciate being alive unless you've stared death in the face. Quote: Part of what makes us human is our societies and our order. For as long as there's been soldiers there's been civilians, and the best societies are ones where all the people in it are protected by righteous people.
1) You're implying that being human is some sort of greatly unique accomplishment. It's not. People do it every day. Idiots do it. Lots and lots of idiots. People are nothing more than big-brained animals. 2) Animals have societies as well. Chimps have a structured hierarchy, a pecking order of dominance among males and females which is respected by the lower castes. Whales have societies, as well as dolphins, lions, wolves, buffalo and pretty much any sort of social animal. Being social is not a trait unique among humans, nor is having a structured society. 3) The "righteous" people aren't defending their society from "bad" people. They're only seen as righteous within their society, and they're simply killing the enemies of their society, much like the Romans did to well... pretty much everyone. Do you think the barbarian army at the beginning of Gladiator were "evil"? Do you think the Romans were? Those who seek to harm the social group are seen as the enemy from within the social group, while the enemy sees the social group as the evil ones. They're both simply varying viewpoints. Quote: Not to say that you're "required" to be ethical when playing EVE, but why are so few people ethical when the offical rules say you're allowed to not be? Are you all such blind slaves that you... cannot see the society underneath that can form?
Pot, meet kettle. Pirates are a necessary part of the society. You don't seem to see that. Lawbreakers are a necessary part of any society. Villains are necessary. People NEED those types of people to point the finger at and say "that guy's bad. I'm glad I'm better than him!" Without an occasional dose of chaos, one cannot appreciate the order that one strives to achieve. EVE is a wonderfully open sandbox where you only have what you're able to keep from others and I like it that way. Perhaps next time you get ganked, you'll take responsibility for your actions and realize that it is your own fault for allowing it. |

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 02/08/2008 15:33:32 There are some people in Eve who do things so scummy that it really makes you wonder if they aren't also a duplicitous ass-hat IRL. Such people DO NOT typically include those who like subjecting others to unconsensual PvP though IMO. Nor does it include those who make a strategically-oriented decision to conduct an epic backstab (a la MC turning on BoB last December.) Nor does it include most scammers. Sure they might generate some negative feelings in you if you fall victim to them, but it's all just in-game business you know.
Now on the other hand, you get people who prey on the inexperienced, drag them many jumps out to Low Sec, blow them up, take their gear, and then just insult them repeatedly. This is allowed under Eve mechanics, and I'm okay with that, but I don't think it really speaks well of the attacker/s. On the other hand if you do all that, and then instead of smacking you inform the person of what they did wrong that got them destroyed. That's fine.
Most people don't roleplay in this game. They play through their characters, as opposed to their character playing them, I guess is one way to look at it. But that said, the Eve world is a lot different than the real world, and normal modes of behavior don't apply, hence all the chaos in New Eden.
As for me personally, I'm just along for the ride tbh. |

Edited by: Karentaki on 02/08/2008 16:04:31... LOL Because I'm a pirate in EVE, I must therefore be a pirate in real life... Yes, I do happen to own a boat and sail around stealing treasure and saying "Yarr" a lot. I also have a pet parrot. Also, lol at "these people are the great leaders who can form great societies (like Jesus and George Washington)". I don't remember much from the bible, but from what I do remember, Jesus is supposedly an alter-ego of one of the greatest creaters of pain and suffering ever. A few examples:
- God drowned about 99% of all complex land organisms on Earth
- God destroyed entire cities simply because some inhbitants disobeyed him
- God condemns people to eternal suffering for not following his rules
To be honest that doesn't seem to be a very good role model... [disclaimer] None of the above material is in any way meant to be offensive. [/disclaimer] EDIT: Originally by: soldieroffortune 258 are you sure your not the same/ friends with the same kid who gave these reviews of some other games?

no, its the christian review of popular video games and the funny part is, the kid who was giving those reviews, never even played grand theft auto or metal gear solid because "they arent allowed on campus because of their 'M' rating" so he was basing it soley off of advertisments, and what he's heard |

What does this say about people in society? That without the constraints of society they do not see the need for a society's general rules against destruction? That they, deep down, are nothing more than primitive animals that eat each other for food and spend all their time fighting and none of it doing productive, long term successful things?
Part of what makes us human is our societies and our order. For as long as there's been soldiers there's been civilians, and the best societies are ones where all the people in it are protected by righteous people.
Perhaps most people are animalistic, and some people are not - these people are the great leaders who can form great societies (like Jesus and George Washington) who fight against the evils of destruction...especially random and wanton destruction that results in heavy losses and few gains...
Not to say that you're "required" to be ethical when playing EVE, but why are so few people ethical when the offical rules say you're allowed to not be? Are you all such blind slaves that you only follow the offical rules, and cannot see the society underneath that can form?
Anyways, perhaps next time you want to "Gank" someone, you should consider how much harder it is to fight those who cause misery, rather than being one of the evil thugs that causes it.
So many questions and so many answers to them. I will tell answer them but you have to do one thing first. Give me a satisfying answer to this, "Whats the point of life?" Now go in the corner and remember this is a game. Blowing stuff is fun. |

I used to be what is termed a "anti-pirate". After forming a Alliance with friends called EKLIPTICA we headed off to Pureblind, at the time the most pirate infested region of space, we cleaned out the region and lived there for some time. Rules of engagment where fire on -10's or set red only or return fire once fired upon and add offending party to the red list. Our space was also considered "Free Space" meaning that if you didnt come in and engage the locals, then use it to you hearts content. After a couple years of "Carebear" sitting and having a hard time of getting people to support the pvp arm of the alliance, not supplying isk and ships mainly and the odd extra peeps when bigger blobs came, I threw in the towel with frustration. So i joined one of the biggest, baddest, best and older pirate corps in the game, SNIGG. Life is so much better now, i get tears! i get free Mods! I get tons of pvp action! I dont think im the only one to go pirate because of this reason, maybe carebears should support there pvp arm better, after all, the only reason there in the section of space they own, is because someone else pvp'd for it |

Owwwwww my brain. Organized religion has probably killed off more of this planet's population than everything outside of natural causes. This tidbit of history brought to you by the Auto-de-Fe and similar "my religion is better than your religion cuz I say so" types throughout recorded history. My "crimes" in EvE pale by comparison . **EDIT**For the discerning reading pirate might I dare recommend Dan Simmon's "Hyperion" series....especially books 3-4. Don't worry...it's hard sci-fi...not a trap . |

It's just a natural effect of the way the food chain works. Prey outnumber predators. Worms outnumber birds, birds outnumber housecats, housecats outnumber foxes, and so on. The large number of carebears supports a smaller number of pirates. Since pirates are fewer, there is very little prey for "anti-pirates" to sustain themselves on,. And since "anti-pirates", like pirates, are people who like living in lowsec and blowing other people's ships up without their consent, I think most "anti-pirates" figure out sooner or later that if they were just regular pirates, they'd have more to shoot at. |
