Like I already said, well done to all those that have been elected as CSM.

I've been loosely following the events around the whole CSM thing and I've picked up on one thing that bothers me a little.

That being some cries for the simplification of manufacturing\science\research.

This couldn't be further from what I want, in fact, in my mind, it could do with being more complicated.

I like that side of it... if it was simple and easy it'd be dull and it's not that hard as it is.
moon minerals -> simple reactions -> complex reactions -> T2 components + other bits -> T2 ship\mods
bish bash bosh, job done.

Someone reasure me with their words, that or tell me I'm some kind of masochist

I'm with TheBlueMonkey on this one, the way I'd like to see it done is like this.
Rather than just researching material and time efficiency on a bp you would be able to research a number of sub classes based on what the bpo is for.

This would be for all bps from T2 components up.
In fact I'd like to see it extend to the purity levels of the Tech 2 materials use in the T2 components.

I should try and explain this better... Mmm

so, Mr Jo Nobody sets up a moon miner and has low skills as his moon mining array goes about it's business it takes longer and mines less due to the skills (just like in a barge).

Then he puts his materials into his reactor, his skills are low so there is a huge waste and a large impurity ratio.
This then carries over to poor Jo's advanced reactions with even more impurities in the final product.

Jo then decides he wants to make, say, an ion thrusters once again he has low skills and an unresearch bp.
The result would be a below average ion thruster.

Jo then gets onto make a Hulk or some other such ship that uses ion thrusters.
The cumulative result is a hulk that does a percentage less top speed than most.

Back to the beginning (stick with me, it's not that hard and it's kind of how my head works)

Jo goes off and trains his reactor skills so he gets close to 100% on reaction so he now has a purity rating on the T2 material of 99.999% this then goes into his ion thruster bp and eventually his hulk which now goes slightly faster due to the higher quality of the materials used.

This then goes to the next level where Jo starts researching speed or cpu or power grid on his ion thruster ergo making it either faster or less cpu hungry or power grid hungry (I know as a component it doesn't actually use cpu or power grid but if the engine was more efficient then logically there'd be more cpu and pg free for other things.

All these would balance off against each other, say he just focused on speed, this would have a negative effect on power need or cpu need for the ship, lowering it's final cpu\pg (at the moment I think the cpu on a hulk is 300, the pg is 35 and the speed is 70, so if we research on just the component this might adjust to 290 - 30 - 80 or some such math)

In much the same way that mission runners can build up standing with all factions Jo would eventually be able to research all areas of his ion thruster bp but this would take a long time.
Same petering off effect as with current me research would apply, so a level of 10 would see, adequate for most.

The various components would have fairly obvious effecting research,
Ion Thruster - speed/cpu/pg
Magnetometric Sensor Cluster - lock time/lock distance/cpu/pg
Photon Microprocessor - cpu/pg
Crystalline Carbonide Armor Plate - armor hp/resists/cpu/pg
Fusion Reactor Unit - cpu/pg/cap recharge
Oscillator Capacitor Unit - capacitor charge rate/capacitor size/cpu/pg
Pulse Shield Emitter - shield hp/shield recharge/cpu/pg

On top of this Jo then researches his hulk bp which further increases the ships abilities, speed, hull, armor, shield, pg, cpu, cap, etc etc.

I know, I know, database nightmare, tens of options in hundreds of mods on hundreds of ships leading to millions of variations.
It'd be beautiful and put a perplex smile on my other wise sleep face.

this should probably be moved elsewhere...
erm... forum admin :P

you're with yourself on this one eh?

way to destroy any shred of credibility you may or may not have had, thus making all these words a complete and utter waste of time.

Actually. I have been crying for complexity myself. So you aren't alone.

Yes, my sanity belies the bed rock of the aforementioned idea and so should be stricken from all recognition.

Clearly a wise sage you are

The cpu/grid on Eve's ships has been carefully balanced (so it's not right all the time but the point stands), if you could sacrifice certain ship qualities for others you'd end up with some terribly imbalanced things.

Dedicated tackling interceptors that go 30% faster but can't fit weapons (no grid/cpu for them)
Falcons that can't fit weapons but can fit an extra jammer (more lock range so no need to fit sensor booster)
Armor tanking ships with low shield but loads of grid for their modules (and vice versa for shield tanking ships)

Just off the top of my head those are just a few imbalanced monstrosities that would soon become 'the only way to fly ship X'. This idea is far too interwoven with Eve's careful balance and would cause far too many changes at once to be seriously considered.
