As many already has said, the RPG part of EVE online seems to have been forgotten about. There is a rich storyline that isn't really used. That's why I'm pushing for factional warfare in a way it will be something more players can get into more easily by adding some new mechanics around missions and contracts and by being able to aligning yourself to one of the many factions (not only the four main ones).

EVE online may be a sandbox game where you are able to do what you want. But in many ways this has made it very hard for players to get into, as others has stated before me in this thread. There are no real mechanics that pushes for role playing.

CCP led events might sound good in theory but there is a reason why most mmo's abandon such ideas.

mmm, but as we know Eve isn't "most mmo's" and we're got to hope CCP maintain the courage and enthusiasm to keep our game innovative and ground-breaking rather than just falling into the same old tired mediocrity we see in the much of the rest of the industry.

Quote:
- First of all it costs money in terms of wages to support what is usually a small segment of the population.

Then lets not accept that these things are for a "small segment" make the RP arcs impact the game in big ways - make choices relevant and enduring. Let event arcs decide future political alignments for background entities and impact the cost of doing everything from agent running to selling on the market and transit routes. I for one would love to see things like System security level vary on the outcomes of Event Arcs.

Quote:
- Giving advantages/rewards for such events generate whining on the forums. True or not the people handling such events will immediately be seen as corrupt.

Partly this is the fault of some previous corruption yes. Partly its our fault for being immediately suspicious for any result/reward that goes to "other people." Lets keep an open mind and trust improved oversight and professionalism and kick this stuff off again - lets face it, we're advocating enhanced functionality for a game here not awarding nobel prizes, we can afford to take some risks. All it needs is a good level of book-keeping and transparency on the outcome of events and we can make sure that these things are run fairly and any trace of corruption is roundly booted into the long grass before it becomes a problem.

Quote:
- Open events with identifiable ccp characters tend to attract people with no intention of following "the rules".

There shouldn't be "rules" there should be "consequences". I'd like to see Events become meaningful with the actions that pilots take during events reflecting directly on consequence and outcome. Event ships shouldn't be floating piñatas full of "fat loot" to be shot by the greediest opportunist in local - they should be moral quantries, diplomatic complexities, disasters waiting to happen. Involving oneself in an event / event ships should be tacit acceptance that your ship might get blown sky high and you open yourself to significant consequences in terms of sec level, standings, and assorted follow-up grief if you just go in with guns blazing without a care for the organizations involved and political situation.

Quote:
- Advertised mass events attracts more spectators than the system can handle, leading to more whines and a general bad experience for all while costing extra cash to set up.

True, but some thought needs to go in planning really - single system events mass advertised probably a bad idea, but complicated plot-lines with elements across many systems, distributed local roleplay, intel drawn from news, forums etc, these things can be very good.

Quote:
- Small scale events where few people are invited tends to be seen as favouritism.

Agree there, people shouldn't be "invited" they should draw their own conclusions from publicly-available hints and tips and choose to involve themselves on instinct and opportunity. General news can do a good job of letting us know generally where interesting things are happening - it doesn't take too much to task a few corporation scouts to keeping an eye out.

Quote:
Imo EVE offers more for a RP'er than any other mmo out there but its mostly in 0.0. What you can hope for is more mechanics to help players stage their own events. Its doubtful that CCP will involve themselves directly in ingame events to any great extent.

Well fingers crossed you're wrong on that. We've had some great events in the past and these can showcase dramatic elements of the storyline when handled with appropriate resources.

Some of the past Aurora events were fun really. There's nothing wrong with favoring one or another organization once in a while for a few hours or a day, it hardly decides wars maybe just get them a bit closer to the inevitable.
Hell at least we'd have something "serious" to smack about on the forums.

As the topic says. I'm curious on what everyone's plans to make the RPG side of this MMORPG actually happen. As it stands, the lack of it is really dwindling my want to play...

So, tell me, what will you all do to improve the (in my opinion) major aspect of this game?

Personal feeling is that this is where both the upcoming book and ambulation will come in.

t0nyG said quite emphatically that one of the primary reasons for the lack of developement in the back story in recent months has been down to waiting for the book to be finished. Hopefully, with the game now taking us inexorably towards the events of the book - which I cannot wait to read, am planning to pre-order, and hoping like hell I can get a signed copy - and with the Whitewolf genius on board to collaborate on carrying these concepts forward, hopefully that will increase the content side of things sufficiently to make the ongoing story in Eve to become interesting and dynamic.

Add ambulation, and for the first time being able to see your character as an individual in front of you rather than a 2d mugshot, along with the planned abilites to alter body habitus, plastic surgery, and clothing ranges/fashions, etc, this will hopefully lead you to being able to 'identify' with your character (not my concept, but paraphrasing the concept suggests raised at fanfest - as I remember it). Apparently this aspect of things accounts forthe lack of female players in Eve.

Put the two together, identity and content, and hopefully you will have an immersive experience that will start drawing people back into the game, and give the RP side of things a jump-start. Let;s just hope us existing player-base aren't too hide-bound and cynical to give it a chance, as we could just ruin it for the fresh-blood who will hopefully be enthralled by the whole experience.

I think this is going to be my one regret for having played for nearly 4 years, and that is I won't get to experience 'the whole package' from new when it all comes together.

Assuming of course that CCP don't concoct some new scheme to melt my PC or OS during the upgrade process in a transparent attempt to limit server load on patch day (will that ever get old .....)

Upshot ... hopefully nothing needs doing by the CSM ... CCP have it in hand!

Hi Krystal, I've answered a related question here, about how to the usage (or lack thereof) of EVE races.

The CCP initiatives you listed (Ambulation, Faction Warfare, EVE Library et. al) will all help EVE RPG, and I'd like to see the outcome of these before focusing more effort into RPG.

My Guess is that Ambulation will be the strongest factor in increasing RP as it will create more affinity with Characters, and hence more reason to RP, whether that is the RP of the back story by CCP, or RP created by (non RP)players themselves remains to be seen.

It's not just recent months though. Jamyl Sarum's pod exploded in late 2003, and we're still waiting for a new Sarum heir. Doriam II died in July 2005, and we're still waiting for some clues as to who had him killed.

The Chaplain chuckles.

"What is this roleplaying you're talking about... is it when I play with my girls and they dress up in nurses uniforms and we play doctor?"

The Chaplain laughs even harder.

"They are some lovely in those by the way."

The Chaplain frowns when he finds out that his out of beer

"Typical when you have fun you always out of beer”

The Chaplain walks over to his desk and actives his communicator.

“Pallana, I’m out of beer again.”

A voice from the other end snaps back.

”Of course you are.”

The Chaplain chuckles.

“Better tell MeanMachine that his Juk’ta beer shipment will be delayed.”

The voice sighs.

“You better.”
