I've been playing EVE Online for more than a year now, and since then I've done almost everything there is to be done in this game -- I have a very broad range of experience, most particularly in the following areas:
  • I'm an internet spaceship fleet commander, and have been for about the last nine months. I've FC'd gangs of between 5-150 people, including capfleets, and coordinated between gangs of up to four alliances at a time.

  • I've flown nearly every shiptype from frigates to carriers, on my three combat characters. I have something like 250+ kills on my corp's killboard, so I'm a pretty experienced PVPer.

  • I've developed and installed moon mining chains for both corporate and personal use, and spent twelve hours at a time anchoring the damn POSes.

  • While we're discussing POSes, I've theorycrafted and installed about two dozen Control Towers, ranging from small Minmatar ratting POSes to large complex reactor towers to faction-fitted Domination Control Towers. I've also done my share of POS gunning, and have killed dreadnoughts using only the control tower itself.

  • I've incapacitated cynojammers with battleship gangs and sieged towers for hours at a time. I've also provided the cyno for numerous hot drops.

  • I've fought in lowsec, and escorted freighters through 0.0-0.4 space for dozens of jumps. I've also nearly lost a freighter, but that's a story for another time.

You could probably say that I'm an experienced player based on the above, and it's the experiences that I have in this game that I believe make me a pretty good candidate. Here's why:

  • I know EVE's game mechanics better than most, and I know how they can be used effectively. I have a wide breadth of knowledge, and the context to know how game mechanics interrelate.

  • I know how to communicate, and I have nine months' experience in doing so as an FC. In real life, I am also a damn fine public speaker, albeit an extremely nerdy one.

  • Playing for so long, and across so many parts of the game, I know exactly how some areas of the game could be improved - and have demonstrated that in the Features and Ideas forum.

What is your experience with the industrial side of the game?

You say you have done about everything to be done in this game. But the only thing remotely close to industry, is the moon-mining stuff. But that's more POS Warfare related.

Quite a bit.
  • I've developed, installed and maintained half a dozen low-end complex reaction chains for both personal and corporate use. I think you're confusing POS logistics with POS warfare, as well: these chains were established in Feythabolis months after the region was secured, so without shooting a thing.

  • I have a BPO collection of my own, and have been producing in Goonspace for personal profit for some time now. I've also been producing for my corporation at times using the corporate BPOs, particularly in the lead-up to an offensive.

  • On the corporate industry side as well, I've been responsible for the logistics behind moving billions of ISK in materials from 0.0 to lowsec and vice versa, on a number of occasions. I'm very well aware of freighter mechanics as well, both on the side of 0.0 freighters and the AFK-in-highsec kind.

Everything you have mentioned so far is on the massive scale, large gangs, billions of ISK, chains of POSes, etc. What is your experiance of and thoughts for those of us who live a smaller simpler life?

I've only been involved with corporate and alliance activities for about six or seven months now. Prior to then, my activities have been entirely small-scale: ratting for personal profit, running small gangs around space, small-time production and at times a little mining as well.

The thing is, I've kept to that. I'm Australia, so being part of a US-based alliance it's extremely difficult to raise anything other than a small gang to run around with in the first place; likewise, for the first three or four months that I played, I ran around in poorly-fitted Vigils as I learned to play the game well.

So, I think I have a pretty solid level of experience of the 'simpler' life in these games. Do you have a more specific question for me to answer, based on that?

I see a disturbing PvP meentality amongst the candidates. So as a player who prefers, what I find to be, the more relaxing life of the solo mission runner, do you consider PvE a vaiable portion of the gmae or do you wish to see all players forced into PvP regardless of their preferences?

I don't think that the people who draw their enjoyment from PVP and 0.0 politics necessarily believe that PvE is worthless or would ever really wish to see players forced into 0.0-style PVP. I appreciate the current situation, in fact, for a number of reasons:

- I've owned my own missioning characters in the past, and I've appreciated the chance to do something different from time to time. I also agree that it's more relaxing than running a 150-man fleet, that's something nobody will deny. ;)

- Alliance logistics are founded on 0.0 freightering, and I think it'd take a very nuanced suggestion indeed to extend nonconsensual PVP to Empire without putting that at risk. While I've seen no such nuanced suggestion, I think the more important point is that the sanctity of "secure space" is something that even 0.0 alliances rely upon, and removing that would make logistics really horrible for groups like Graypert.

- To some limited extent, every player that leaves the safety of a station is already "forced into PvP", in that it's possible for them to die no matter where they go. I think that's about as far as it needs to go.

While Goumindong is a truly horrible candidate from Goonswarm, Daveydweeb is only a moderately bad one.

Vote for Daveydweeb I guess.

I have several questions, and taking a page out of Talkuth Rel’s book, I decided to ask each candidate in their own thread…

1) Invention – A good idea that still needs work…
a. Have you ever tried invention?
b. What ideas do you have to improve invention?

2) Pilot Security Level – Should it be more important?
a. (In High Sec) – Should Concord react faster if the victim has a higher security level? If the attacker has a lower rating?
b. Should the Security Level of a system affect changes to Pilot Security level changes?
c. Should the Security Level of a Targeted Pilot have more of an effect on the security change of the attacker?

3) Industry – The Creators of Eve
a. Do you regularly build anything?
b. Do you regularly mine?
c. What do you think could be done to improve industry in Eve?
d. You have been asked to help with new ships for industrial characters, describe a few ideas…

I will be addressing each candidate with the same questions ableit it might be a little late:

1) What do you think about more PVE scenarios, ones which would incorporate a large section of the EVE universe. Perhaps like a war between the races, or a war against a different race. Perhaps it would be a war against a pirate corp where PCs are encouraged to come help out the fleet. This could allow players to get more of a feel in some way fleet battles as well.

2) Along the lines of the above statement, how would you feel if the EVE universe had a vote in how their races interacted. Perhaps in order to get users more involved the races would submit 'Resolutions' to the players on actions they take. Perhaps the Gallente Federation gives some offense to the Caldari State or vice versa, maybe the resolution to those that are members of the Caldari State would say something like, "Should the Caldari State retaliate with military force against system XYZ for said offense?". Then there could be some possible PVE event taken in that sector of space. The Caldari State can then give real-time missions to players who wish to participate be it material gathering, intelligence, combat missions, mercenary action, etc.

3) How would you feel about opening Invention to invent new items that they design, potentially completely new items to the EVE universe? I believe giving the players the ability to customize items and perhaps make something completely new would greatly increase their involvement and enjoyment of the game. This would introduce even more learning skills for those that want to do industry and allow them to decide how and what will improve ships. Perhaps even allowing researchers to invent totally new kinds of ships.

4) How would you feel if the EVE universe could start impacting in some way on 0.0? Pirates and alliances in 0.0 often have influence in Empire space and low sec, what if the tables were reversed? What if players in empire space could pass resolutions for the races to clear out temporarily portions of low sec, perhaps even attempt to clear out portions of 0.0? The idea here would not to attact home systems, but perhaps fringe systems. This could help introduce empire players to 0.0 and pvp, it could also help keep in check mega alliances and factions. In addition this could allow empire players the 'occasional' chance to get some resources in 0.0 if they aid the initiative.

5) Finally how would you feel about creating and opening events to all players and not just the wealthiest alliances in EVE? There could be many talented pilots out there that want to compete for fame and glory, but may not have the ISK to do it. Perhaps if EVE provided weekly/monthly tournaments around the EVE universe and then allowed the winners to compete in a bracket system up to a finale, it would encourage even more interaction. Instead of just giving some enormous prize once/twice a year, they could give smaller prizes for each stage of the contest leading up to the ultimage prize. These could also include side contests like 1v1/2v2/etc frigate/cruiser fights. Find out who the best 1v1 player is, or who the best tandem team is, etc.

No, I have never personally tried invention, and so I don't feel qualified to propose my own ideas on how to improve it without the advice of someone with more experience.

a. (In High Sec) – Should Concord react faster if the victim has a higher security level? If the attacker has a lower rating?

c. Should the Security Level of a Targeted Pilot have more of an effect on the security change of the attacker?

Answering all three of these at once: no, I don't believe pilot security level should be more important at all, because there's no pressing reason to make such a change.

Given that suicide gankers kill their targets for reasons other than their K/D ratio, and that the loss of their ship is inevitable, we can conclude that suicide ganking will always occur -- highsec freighter ganking is the prime example. This is consistent with EVE's philosophy that nothing can be done without risk, and I don't see any imperative to change the way security levels are currently implemented.

a. Do you regularly build anything?
b. Do you regularly mine?

d. You have been asked to help with new ships for industrial characters, describe a few ideas…

Again, answering these all at once: Yes, I both produce ammunition and ships for myself and regularly mine with Goonfleet's specops group. I can - and regularly do - fly Mining Barges, T2 Industrials and Freighters on my main.

In terms of improving industry, I'd tentatively suggest that T2 BPOs need to be de-emphasised even further, as they're essentially a zero-effort alternative to invention. I don't particularly favour any of the suggestions that have been proposed for making this change (such as converting them all to BPCs, increasing the waste associated with them, and so on), but I'm definitely open to the change.

Finally, as far as new industrial ships go, I think CCP's aiming to plug the last real niche in terms of industrial ships with jump freighters and the Rorqual/Orca. JFs and Rorquals have been extremely successful thus far, and I think the Orca needs to be implemented carefully to avoid replacing the Rorqual: removing the jump drive is a necessity, as is reducing the cost of running the industrial core. It should also not be capable of the carrier-level tank that the Rorqual can run, in exchange for greater mobility.

I'm pretty confident that factional warfare -- if it's ever implemented -- should cover most of the ideas you raised here, in fact. I think they sound pretty solid, and they certainly would make life much more challenging for PVEers who wish to experience some fleet fights.

That said, this has already been done from time to time. The example I'm thinking of here is the GM-run even in late 2006 where a Serpentis Nyx was to be killed by a player fleet. It also demonstrated the ability of such events to include players from all areas of the game: top damage on that killmail went to a Goonfleet member.

Quote:
2) Along the lines of the above statement, how would you feel if the EVE universe had a vote in how their races interacted.

In terms of roleplaying, I'm not sure that this necessarily makes much sense -- not all four races are democracy, yadda yadda. More pragmatically, though, I'm pretty sure you'd agree that every resolution promising a fight would end with a definite "yes". ;)

Quote:
3) How would you feel about opening Invention to invent new items that they design, potentially completely new items to the EVE universe?

I don't really think there's any reasonable way to do this: Zataaki would undoubtedly create a Raven with eight turret slots, and that simply cannot be. ;) Yes, it would be nice to be able to improve ships -- but that's undermining the distinction between the Raven and the Navy Raven, and that would be a change for the sake of change.

Quote:
4) How would you feel if the EVE universe could start impacting in some way on 0.0?

I don't think this is the way to bring Empire players into 0.0; pirate corps and the NPC events you raised in an earlier question would be much more effective, for two reasons:

- Players who wish to PVP can do so at any time they like, either by themselves or as a pirate corp. The barrier to entry is very, very low.
- Empire factions already do influence 0.0 life significantly. Ask Awox about what it was like to camp one of Goonswarm's logistics routes for six months. I'm pretty sure that he actually managed to kill a freighter, which is a pretty significant blow to a 0.0 logistics team.

Quote:

By all means, I think this would be a great idea. It'd certainly help to improve the quality of the competition by reducing the entry cost to the alliance tournament and then holding a series of preliminary rounds to find the starting teams: the quality of the competition could only be helped by eliminating worthless alliances like Goonswarm before they hit EVE-TV. :v
