Influenced by Babylon 5?
Ok, I’ll say right from the outset that I’m a lazy git and have not bothered to see if this has topic has been brought up before, so I apologise if it has.

Right, back to my question- Was Eve influenced by the SF TV series Babylon 5?
From my side, being an ardent fan of the said TV series, I would say I do indeed see similarities in many aspects of Eve to Babylon 5.

Firstly, ship models. Has anyone noticed the similarity between the Centauri ‘Primus’ class Battlecruiser and the Caldari ‘Raven’ class battleship? And how about the Earth Alliance ‘Nova’ class Dreadnought and the Caldari ‘Rokh’ class Battleship? The Caldari Condor, Crow, Raptor class ships are very similar to the Centauri ‘Vorchan’ and ‘Corvus’ class ships as well.

Secondly, the games races. I see similarities between the Earth Alliance and the Caldari, the Narn and the Minmatar, the Vorlons and the Jove, the Minbari and the Gallente and the Markab and the Amarr.

I see other influences in the game mechanics, the most obvious being ships can only jump through ‘hyperspace’ through gates unless they are big enough to fit ‘jump drives’ (and these ships can then ‘warp’ other ships through the drive field they create) for example.

Anyone else noticed similar influences? Or perhaps influences from other TV series or books?

I wonder if the blood raiders are right out of star hunter.

I mean if you have ever seen that show, th blood raiders are these evil people that steal peoples kids and kill their families and use the children to expand their numbers.

sounds familiar..

I would say Serenity might have been the influence for the Harbinger.

If EVE was influenced by Babylon 5, I want CCP to become influenced by the Shadows - And their ships!!! I think I would sell my family to be able to fly such a ship...

hard for anything sci-fi not to be influenced by b5, the influence isn't central but it is definitely there

I'll definitely concede to that. If you read "Theodicy" you'll see that there is a sixth race, even more hidden than the Jove, who have their hands in everything and prefer to corrupt and adjust the course of events of the other races to their own nefarious goals from afar. They are the feared enemy of the Jove, who have been waging a secret war with them for centuries...

Zardaz is also dead, but no-one cares about Zardaz.

In all seriousness, I think just about every sci-fi film, book or series has influenced EvE in some way. Look at the Slasher, for example. See how the rear/upper half of the ship looks very much like the rear half of an X-Wing?

I would say its pretty hard to design as many spaceships as CCP and not have some part look like something else.

I beleive it was influenced by a few games.

if i recall there was also a dev interview where they developers admitted to being influenced by Homeworld and a few other games.

being form homeworld it was the only one i remember, but someone may have a linky for you.

Shocked(looks pointedly at devs, vain but useful)YARRRR!!

pretty sure that the moa was designed before anything on Serenity/Firefly was.

I think a lot of it depends on previous experience. There is no objective connection but something about the cruel world combined with a dependence on mining makes me want to hop back in my Pyro GX and splode some reactors.

I've also seen some ships that resemble Homeworld, though the resemblance is vague and It takes a bit to see it, baring the Amaar destroyer, which bears a strong resemblance the Hiigaran Battlecruiser. I've seen lots more Homeworld inspired names though, even taking out the ones I account for... Very Happy .

I suppose the 'Star Trek' influence would be shields, can't think of much else though?

I have been re-reading 'The Algebraist' - there is a section in their about ships and things that is full of terminology that matches very closely that of Eve.

Give the book came out in 2005 , Eve predates it , so I wonder if Banks was playing Eve at all.....
