What's the best way to get both to 7? Alternate between doing missions for each, or maybe only do missions for amarr and minmatar and get the Caldari/Gallente standings up by proxy? Or maybe there is another way?

How many missions roughly would it take to get them to 7?

It's for one faction approx 1000 regular lev 4 missions, give or take some as it's highly dependant what kind of missions do you get as storylines. For 2 opposing faction I'm not sure 7.0 for both is possible. If it is you are looking at least 4x more missions than for one faction bcos how faction stadnings are calculated. It would be a lot easier to do alt for opposing factions instead of trying to acive it on same char.

For reasonably active and competent average missionrunner one faction stading of +7.0 or above is approx 1 year of work (on kill missions) as very rough estimate.

At best, you could get them both close to around +5, but not quite there.
The derived decrease is 50% of the derived increase, and at +5 standing, increases are 3 times less effective as the decreases.

Example, would you be at +5 with each, and you do a +10% storyline for each, you get:
+5.00 C, +5.00 G ; +10% C, - 5% G -> +5.500 C, +4.250 G
+5.50 C, +4.25 G ; - 5% C, +10% G -> +4.725 C, +4.825 G

Whoopsies, you actually LOST standing with both now Twisted Evil

Gonna have to say. . . Alts Laughing. Seriously, knew a guy who had almost a perfect +10 Caldari State standing. Then he got his Gallente Standings out of the negatives, by the time he was done he was at about 4 Caldari Standings. . .

7 on both is not going to happen.

CORRECTION:

+5.50 C, +4.75 G ; - 5% C, +10% G -> +5.225 C, +5.225 G

use a calculator next time yea?

Losses to standing are calculated based on your distance to -10, not 0. That's why a 2% increase at 5.0 standing doesn't do much, and a -2% loss will set you back badly. Gains, you correct calculated as based on distance to +10.

Make sure you know what you are talking about and who you are criticizing next time yea?

Unfortunately, a calculator won't help for that.

On a related note - I don't particularly care about Gallente being positive or not, I just want to stay above -5 (point of NPC navy attacks if I remember right) as I have corpmates that operate in Gallente space. Would doing Minmatar missions for the indirect standing increase with Gallente affect much or would it trickle on down to Caldari as well?

It will decrease caldari less but also increase gallente less. Go work for Sisters of Eve. They love Gallente and only dislike Caldari a little.

If I remember correctly, it's -5.0 EFFECTIVE before they start shooting you, not -5.0 base... but I might be not right about that.
In case I am correct however, Diplomacy L5 should ensure you never get shot by any navies because of "bad relations", ever.

Still, even if it's -5.0 base (not -5.0 effective), if you NEVER shoot ANY ships of that faction once you hit -5.0, derived standings should never drop below -5.0 base, as that's the derived standings cap.
So, if you avoid missions like Enemies Abound, you should be pretty safe too.

It's effective standings as I've dipped to -5.01 Gallente as a result of an Enemies Abound when I was at -5. I didn't get shot at in Gallente space (-2.01 Effective due to Diplomacy V).
