Ok, i've had it with my graphics card. I can play eve for max 30minutes until it crashes randomly or the graphics begin to flicker in a way which would immediatly kill any epileptic person, and this happens in both XP and OSX

My graphics card is an ATI Radeon 1900 (which should be more than capable of handling eve graphics, premium and classic) but i cant play my games anymore like this. My guess was that its overheating itself, but why it does that is a mystery to me, i checked it and its not much dust on it, so it must be something with the cooler but that thing is working so hard it sounds like a plane taking off when i launch a game :S

Anyways, i'm going for a new card now, but which one? What i absolutely need is a card which will work in OSX too since its basically my working machine, so it needs to be able to handle the whole creative suite, finalcut etc. but ofc it has to run my games too, preferrably a bit less soundintensive (from the cooler i mean)
So, my question to you guys would be which card would suit my baby best? Can i just go and buy any card now with the Intelchips??

And a bit of a bonus question, can i upgrade a iMAC with a new card too?

That's definitely some weird issue you're having. Either you have a faulty graphic card or corrupt drivers. Does this only happen with Eve?

As for upgrades, there's the Nvidia Quadro which costs you a kidney. A few days ago the Mac Pro's received an update and they come with a new ATI card, the Radeon HD 2600. However i don't think it's been sold separately yet.

Can I upgrade an iMac?
The graphics chip is soldered onto the motherboard.

Yes its definatly weird, while it only appeared in eve at the beginning i have troubles now in all other games too, alt tabbing usually does the trick for a few minutes then it returns :S I doubt that its faulty drivers because i have it on both XP and OSX

Nvidia Quadro you say, hmm, i was aiming more at a 8800 or similar. The thing is i wont buy one before i dont know if the nvidia cards also run on OSX. can you confirm this?

Arr, damn, i should have known it and should have bought a 2nd MacPro for my bro instead of an iMac :(

The early rev ATI graphics cards in Mac Pro's had overheating issues - it was all over the WOW and macrumors forums. Apple were replacing them. I assume that if you are still in warranty/applecare that they will replace it. If not then you have to get a Mac card since the PC ones don't have the right firmware (and OS X might not have the right driver) the apple store is showing :
X1900XT
HD2600XT
NVIDIA 7300GT
NVIDIA 8800GT

as your possible options.

New info just in !!!

Found on Barefacts

ALERT TO OWNERS OF "OLD" MAC PROS! (CORRECTED)
The GeForce 8800 GT is *NOT* compatible with the older Mac Pro (August 2006, April 2007) as we assumed. I've been informed that new machines use EFI64, the old Mac Pros use EFI32, to work in an EFI32 machine you need an EFI32 ROM.

It would be worth checking if the same is true of the ATI HD2600XT card.

On further investigation this seems to be a hot topic at the moment with arguments for both sides of the coin ... if you can't get your card replaced under warranty I'd hold off till someone else actually tries it.
