I don't like every idea here, but most of them are really good, especially as regards multi-ore roids and crystals therefor. I think this could be a really positive change.

i still the sec status for ore quality would help with the isk side of mining. if you want more interesting mining then aoe strip miners would certainly be fun.

i always thought of the belts in eve as planetary rings instead of true asteroid belts. it helps me sleep at night.

over all a lot of fun ideas. if they make rats switch targets from the permatank while mining they need to also implement that for mission rats :D

I think I'll bump this thread for Great Justice.

Abd to add something: The areas where the on-board scannable belts spawn could have some kind of 3D texture to it, like the floating debris and asteroids found in some missions. This would give it more of the impression of a big belt / field of asteroids.

Those animated asteroids would be purely client side with no server side effects apart from checking wether or not one is in the area of a belt / asteroid cloud.

Between scannable mining locations there could also be some single really big rocks spread around that you can find only by flying around. They'd spawn some 500 to 5000 km away from the mining locations and finding them should be worth the time zooming around looking for them. They could also include higher class ores, like Hedbergite in 0.5-0.7 space or ice.

Awaiting more input. Smile

There is one thing I always found awesome to see, a huge ice belt stretching for over 400km.
A truly large belt where the distance between one end and the other is like 1000km or something would be an awesome sight, especially with all the miners having their own piece of it.

I suppose a true (solar/system) asteroid belt could be done, one or two per system and then minor belts per planets (planetery rings?)
You could have a bunch of asteroid spawn points spread across the system's star in a circle.

Would also add a bit of interest in finding your own corner of an asteroid belt, something like 100.00km off the warp in point, or maybe a few AU.

Asteroids should also be allowed to grow much bigger then they do currently, a veldspar roid can (at max) hit 16255.6 in radius (32km size) which holds only 150k of Veldspar, which I could fit in my Hulk in a single cycle.

Now ofcourse an Arkonor roid of 32km would be off the rails but it would nice to actually have an asteroid that...takes a while to deplete.

Signed a hundred million times and bump on top of that! And while we're at it, MEGABUMP to Nyphur's Idea as well. If you two got your heads together with a couple of other geniouses, you could probably revolutionalize mining as we know it!

I'm tempted to report this thread so the devs will see it, but I won't, since they've specifically asked that we do not :D So I'll just bump it.

i would like to see a less-static way of moon mining... or at least alternate ways of obtaining the moon minerals.

some means of harvesting planets, and not just moons would also be interesting.

i really like the idea of spawning ore sites within planetary rings. they would not necessarily be continuous, but would be at various spots along the same orbit. ring sites could contain special ores not found elsewhere, as would comets or other interesting things.

what would be really really cool is something like a "wandering star" that would appear in various systems. and they would have 2 stars for a certain amount of time. these nomad stars would be very small compared to normal ones, and change position each day as they pass through a solar system. while such a star is accessible, you would be able to mine some objects in close orbit around it, probably using the scanner after you warp to it. or even make the star itself something that could be harvested somehow...

Very good topic! Like a lot of the ideas in here to make mining a more interesting profession.

And people worried about multi-ore asteroids decreasing effeciency and thus might drive overall prices up.

Well you could also see it the other way. By increased complexity and more challenge, more people might pick up mining and thus more ore gets mined. So prices will level again.

But like other ideas, with crystal specialisation and boosting sertain Ore types will help increase effeciency again.

Overall I really like the ideas in here and would sertainly make mining FUN! And that's why we play games for. To have FUN!

Cheers

With your plan, a high SP player doesn't even need to consider the market, just get high skills and start churning M^3...

Asteriods are already doing what you propose in a sense... with the exception of veldspar, every asteroid type produces a mixture of minerals... what sense is it to further complicate things with a mixture of ores, which will just be a different distrobution of minerals? Other than to clutter my cargo bay with more stacks of ore, and to reward those with many refining skills (again rewarding high SP at the expense of low) what does this accomplish?

Not really. The more SP players will be spending their time flying around looking for the more expensive ore, rather than mining rubbish. It would have to be balanced that they'd make more money from prospecting for higher-grade ore than simply mining lower grade ore. That way the low-grade ore is kept to the newer (or bored) players, and the older miners do what they do best.

EDIT: As for T2 and strip miners - keep strip miners as the bulk things they are - it's the same as blasting and filtering. But I'd make T2 mining lasers use crystals for the specific ore types, and when used on a roid only that ore is extracted. That way you'd have the older miners (as described above) zipping around prospecting all over the place for the best ore, then extracting the best ore that they can find, which leaves even more of the less expensive ore for the newer players to do.

This is one of the few ideas that caters for everyone, I think Shocked

Another point of thought concerning mining is cargoholds.
Yield is fine, increasing yield just unbalances things and it goes fast enough as it is.
What however could use a boost is the amount of cargo you can hold, currently it doesnt take long to fill up a Hulk with two cargo expanders.

Although corp mining with a hauler can be done, it has the risk of your ore stolen seeing as corp mining demands the use of a jetcan.
Seeing as hold mining is something that should not be limited to the Hulk, maybe another ship class or something should be brought in to increase cargo capacity.

How about...

Conveyor Beam
Mid slot

Only works on friendly targets/gang members.

Allows ore (and only ore) to travel from the target vessel's hold, into your own.

These could be fitted onto Industrials (Iteron V has 5 Mids), to speed along mining without risking Can Flipping.

Been suggested before, in various forms. But I thought I'd resuggest it.

So, any more thought going on for this? After all, its been nearly 6 months sine your post so I was sort of curious if there has been any progresion, or was it all diverted to FW? FW has come now, and a little different direction for stuff would be good too.

Hi…

I just want to spend my two cents.

If you want to get the mining profession bette and more interesting, you have many good idears above.

But what is about:

Harvesting Moonmins with a Ship ?
Surely not as much as with a POS but with a team of 3-4 Miners and a hauler... but why not.

Stripping multi Ore Roids.
Sounds great, but why stuck in the old Names. Use the Surveyscanner to analyse the Roid`s Structure. To see 80% of x 18 % of y and 1,99 % of z and 0,01% of Rare Stuff.
No Name of the ore is needet. Only refined Ore can be sold.

Rare Stuff
Give us some pretty nice new Toys. Like Gems, radioactive Materials, Concentrated Minerals or such things. Nothing that have much influence on the market but something that give you a smile when you find it in your Cargohold.

New Items/old Items
An question i ask myselve since i start my EvE career is, where all those Products come from that only NPC sell. Tobaco, whine, small arms, planetary Vehicles and so on.
I never saw an hydrophonic Farm orbiting a Planet, or an Factory to produce Carbone.
All this items are already in the Database, why i can buy them only from NPC.... but this is not the right thread to discus that 

Deadspace Mining
Some rare Exploration sides like 9/10 or 10/10 dificulty, with the need to clear them complete, but you will find there Roids with 80% Zydrine 15% Megacyte and 5% Rare ( only for examle )

Maybe i have some more Idears

I believe there is a industrial expansion on the cooker which we might see with ambulation or as the next expansion thereafter. This winter or next summer, I suppose.

I think that removing unnamed T1 loot from missions (the same T1 loot that is bought only to be reprocessed) would be a very easy thing to do, and would help miners a lot.

This only addresses the profitability of mining, as opposed to the fact that it's utterly boring, and plagued by macro bots that are effectively stealing the profits of honest miners - and thus would steal some of the increased profits generated by a reduced mineral supply. I imagine that CCP has decent statistics on the approximate levels of macro mining, as well as the profitability of mining vs other activities like missions, so they should be able to have a decent idea if they'll need to take more action to make mining competitive than just eliminating the bots.

Some very nice ideas in this thread so far, really like the idea of non-static spawn locations with the addition of having different static areas with no asteroids (or very low quality asteroids compared to the system sec status) with rat spawns in them to separate ratting from mining - static hidden belts wouldn't affect macros at all really, and that's a pretty important side effect that should come from making mining more interesting... and without static spawn locations, ratting becomes less attractive. Needless to say, rats would spawn in the mining locations that were visited as well Twisted Evil

I would like to add one of my own ideas for changes to mining. It might have already been mentioned I didn't check every where.

I would like to see astroid belts with astroids that have warp disruption fields. so you have to fly to get close enought to mine the astroid, and have rare astroids surronded by common astroids so you eather have to mine away the common astroids to get rid of there warp disrupters co you can get closer to the rare astroids or fly all the way to the rare astroids.

I would also like to see mining in mining ships exploded moons, so you basicly could get moon minerals from an asteroid belt.

I really like the overall idea , but I still have to favor leaveing the asteroid types as they are , other then that love the features and added events that would make mining fun , kill the Macros, and add some more fun to the game.

the problem with removing the current ore types is with skills. there are more skills than minerals so you couldn't covert vled process to trit refining V

Mining just needs more interaction, any interaction...
May be efficient to watch SGA while mining but still, there should be more involved than just parking your Hulk in the belt Neutral

Going to be completely frank here.

Eve doesn't have an XP grind, but it still has a grind. The grind is monetary. I know, and I respect, that there are some players in the game who are serious, dedicated miners and truly enjoy that part of the game, but for many, it's just a grind. Something you gotta do to make isk so you can do something else.

If you make mining difficult, complex, and interesting (and therefore fun) for the dedicated miners, it will really suck for those who just want to sleepwalk through it semi-afk cause they need to grind some isk.

I think you need to leave the current mining as it is for the "grinders" and offer more challenging (and lucrative) variants for those who are truly dedicated to the profession and really focus on it as their primary play-style.

Those who to semi-afk can grab an Industrial with miner and park it 1.0

I suppose it would be possible that the current mining system stays, but that sort of a minigame is added that can boost your yield by micro managing the entire mining process (targetting specific areas, handling incoming ore etc).
