I am a minmatar pilot with 3 million sp and not looking at cross training anytime soon. But I am planning out my skill progression so I can start buying the books and train up the most helpful learning skills. I have decided to focus on the smaller ships (the biggest I think I want to fly is a BC or HAC).

That said, which race should I cross train to achieve a good mix of HACs, Recon ships, covert ops, interceptors, Afs, ect. while having some synergy with my minmatar skills?

If you have any insights into the order I train these ships that would also be helpful.

I apologize in advance if there are any threads about this already. I did not find any useful results with the search feature.

I heard minmatar is pretty good at those.

HAC's: Sacrilege (missile/armor)
Recons: Curse (Speed, Drones) [Falcon / Rook is the best recon ATM, but there's not alot of overlap with Minmatar]
Covert: Uh, crosstrain for covert is lol?
Interceptors: CROW (Speed, Missiles)
AFs: Minmatar are hands down the best of the worst.

I'd say just stick to Minmatar. No really, I trained for all the Minmatar ships (sub-capital) and have never regretted it.

I'd suggest not cross-training until you've specced out Minmatar ships, and until you have enough game knowledge under your belt to know what combat-style you like the most.

Minmatar - Speed
Amarr - Range? DPS? Tank?
Caldari - Missile spam and tank.
Gallente - DPS

Stick to minmatar. Best race ingame atm but SKILL intesive, so you must spec your ships and support skills if you actually wanna fly the ships propperly. If you're not planning to invest a good 14 mil SP in minmatar then I suggest you train for the "gaydari" mission-runners or the omgwtfpwnbbq gallente kamikaze ships. Used to be Amarr and cross-trained minmatar and love it.

P.S. Don't train Amarr, overall it sux, the amarr race drawbacks are immense compared to other races Shocked

Basically these are each races speciality

Minmatar - Speed/DPS at range
Gallente - DPS close up/Speed
Caldari - ECM/Gang Warfare/DPS at extreme range
Amarr - LOL

I'm Caldari cross training to Minmatar. Caldari now have the best recon ships, and minnie command ships use shield tanks which is ideal - I'll be in a sleipnir mid jan since I already have all the shield skills sorted. I think Minnie command ships are the best - although this is arguable so I wouldn't recommend cross training there since this will probably be your ultimate goal. For HAC's stick with minmatar or possibly Gallente or maybe EVEN amarr for the Sacriledge which is awesome. Recon Definately Caldari, Covert ops + Ceptors Caldari, AF's I wouldn't even bother flying.

So if you're leaning towards HAC's then Each race has a good selection to try out (although the Caldari HAC's can't solo well at all) and you'll have to decide for yourself what you want. This also goes for Battlecruisers (Hurricane, Myrmidon, Harbinger and Drake are all very good for different reasons) Otherwise for everything else I don't think you'll go wrong cross training to caldari.

I trained amarr to begin with (dont laugh please :) that helped me cross train to gallente, due to armor and gunnery skills, then minimater and ive found myself doing alot of shield skills for them which would be useful if i decided to go caldari

i cross trained into amarr mostly (bad idea), with a tiny bit of caldari skills to use a raven to npc and i trained gallente BS to use drone skills with dominix

but srsly, no need to cross train anything especially at 3m sp you cant really afford to lose time you gotta specialize in one thing

i find looking at the weapon systems a good plan , minnis use mainly pros and autos but do use alots of ships with missles so caldari might be a good cross training choise as they will make your minni ships more powerful as well as giving a differance choise of ship and gameplay, plus both races have shield tanking ships so that also helps

If your continuing to thinking about cross training, then Start working on support skills and get those up. Those will help no matter what race your flying. Im minmatar and I did Gallente for a bit just because I wanted something different. I think I might get Caldari up a bit. I've been working on a lot of missle skills because I am having a blast with Stealth Bombers

Why crosstrain? If you're already minmatar you can't train better :) Or maybe thats just my purist instincts talking.. I'd probably train caldari if I trained anything else.. but I won't.

I'm gallente but you can take the same approach I did.

Train your matari ships to the teeth, max or near max your gunnery skills and since your minnie youll need good missile skills as well. Then when you want something new to fly down the road, train up Gallente cruiser V.

I already had BC V so when I trained minnie cruiser V i was able to fly minnie hacs, commandships, and recons by just training one skill. Of course I had to train up medium projectiles but it only took about two months to open up 3 t2 ship families in a completely different race.

Then youll have two play styles, zoom zoom matari and kamikaze gallente.

My Brother found it good to cross-train to amarr (contrary to what some people in this post have said) due to the fact that they use guns on there t1 and some of there t2 (good because minmatar use/need gun skills), and there t2 ships use missle skills (also good for minmatar ships), also because some minmatar ships use armor tanking (amarr are armor tankers), and he also did it due to the fact that some amarr ships (mainly the ships that have no damage bonus to lasers and just cap bonus, ie - punisher, maller, proph, apoc; actually tend to work pretty good with autos and arty).

He has liked it so far, although i think he also did it cause he likes the amarr ship models =)

Minmatar are an interesting race, as they can cross train easily to just about anything else. Being split weapons and tank, it lets you easily move over into another race with minimal training (once you get your base skills up)

With that in mind, I'd suggest you stay with Minmatar for a while. If you absolutely have to cross train, it will depend on which school you want to follow:
DPS, Drones, or Armor you'll want to go Gallente, as your gunnery skills will easily follow into blasters, and you'll already have the armor tanking skills needed.
Missiles, Shields, or PVE you'll want to train Caldari. They are the king of missiles and shields and pve, and have some very good pvp ships, although few and far between.

There's a lot more to Minmatar than you can find out in 3 mil SP, but they are very skill intensive. Other races seem to get "good" with fewer SP. If you haven't already trained out your learning skills to the max you want to train them, you're already behind the power curve.

I'll toss out some of my opinions on ship types you posted:
AF's - Minmatar are hands down the best AF's out there. Both are useful, which doesn't usually happen with the other races.
Recon's - Minmatar have some excellant Recons, but so do some of the other races. I guess it depends on play style and what situations you see yourself in to be honest. Cruiser 5 is a pretty big time sink for a beginner to really consider cross training on a whim.
Cov Ops - Other than the stealth bomber, the cheetah wins here with it's slot layout of 3, 4, 3. This let's you fit all of the sneaky goodness, with a few extras that other ships can't. Stealth bombers on the other hand, can be argued to different races. Caldari used to win here, but not so much after the stealth bomber change.
Interceptors - If you want gang support or solo ability your choices will range greatly here. Amarr and Caldari are slightly better for solo work, while Minmatar can, but are far more suited for group and support work.
HAC's - Pretty much each race has one or two great HAC's, except Caldari, which is arguable in pvp. PVE I'd have to say Caldari do fairly well.

In summary, if you are looking for synergy, any of the other 3 races can very well compliment a minmatar base, but you might want to stay racial for a while until you can really start to take advantage of something bigger than a T1 ship. Make your decision further along based on individual experience.

stay minmatar... if you still want to cross train gallente, caldari still sucks with the new torp bonus, amarr is alright, but amarr hac's blow, but yeah enough rambling, stay with training minmatar, unless they are going nerf us

If you're already full skilled up in Minmatar, you're perfect, don't worry. But if you still want to cross-train into something, here are my opinions:

Caldari - Shields, missiles, electronic warfare, and maybe hybrid railguns. As a Minmatar pilot, you probably already have shields and missiles trained up like Barry Bonds on steroids. So, you need only worry about electronic warfare and the totally optional hybrid weapons. Cross-training into Caldari from Minmatar is very quick and easy.

Gallente - Armor, drones, hybrid weapons (both blasters and railguns), and maybe sensor dampening. As a Minmatar pilot, you're already great in armor, but you'll need to work on the other stuff. Generally, Minmatar HACs, Recons, and Interceptors are perfect for small, fast roaming PvP gangs, but if you insist on cross-training, Gallente are a decent second choice.

Amarr - I've seen so many Amarr ships use projectile weapons, missiles and drones, that I wonder if training lasers is even necessary to be a decent Amarr pilot... then I remember only lasers make "pew pew" noises and I demand you train them. I would've loved to have gone the Amarr route months ago, but with so many skills in Gallente/Caldari, I just can't be bothered myself.

Being Minny sets you up nicely for cross-training, as we need to train everything anyway :) Despite the lols, etc-- since training Amarr cruiser 5 I haven't looked back.

id stick with minmitar personally but if ur gonna crosstrain id suggest gallente.

the reasons for this are....

1. the gall drone skills will aid you with minmitar

2. gallente and minmitar both have ships which can armor/sheild tank

3. projectiles work nicely on a lot of ggallente ships (the drone boats) so no need to train blasters if you dont want to.

4. the machariel, say no more!!

before i trained gallente i weighed up the pros n cons of all races and im really pleased wityth my decision, although really if i could do it all again id just focus on 1 race.
