Hey all! I've known of ratting for a while but never really done it. I've just assumed mission running (for LP/standing/loot/bounty) was naturally a better choice. So, I am curious... in what cases could ratting be better than mission running? What is different? What is the same?

Maybe pros and cons of each might be beneficial to know. Are belt rats harder? Worth more? Drop better loot? Etc. Perhaps I should limit this debate to high-sec mission running and rats from 0.5-1.0. I realize ratting in 0.0 might be far more profitable. But for me, my skills (both SP and lack of pvp xp) limit me to the high-sec locations. Assume a cruiser is being piloted as well. :P All feedback appreciated!

Ratting in high-sec is almost pointless vs. Mission running
Ratting in Low/0.0 can be better than mission running if you can find a system that you wont get scanned out in while fighting the higher bounty rats. (The best areas are patrolled by pirates or Alliance's that more then likely run on a "Not Blue Shoot It", as a fairly low sp player this can be hard to make a profit doing VS Hi-Sec MR.

If you can find a nice low sec/0.0 system to rat in... the rewards are high but again... so is the risk.
EvE is not really a solo game outside of high sec... join a good corp that owns or is pushing to be in low sec.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I'm holding off on my move to low-sec until I have RL time to research various corps and dedicate some time to learning pvp fundementals. Right now with my limited playtime I'm happy in high-sec.

High sec is kind of like a normal college semester and 0.0 is like a summer intensive course. If you want the EVE experience crammed down your throat with rats blasting your hull from under you and hidden sites to explore and belts glowing with rich ore and more alliances than you can comprehend struggle over all of it, fly out to 0.0.

High sec is a good place to take your time, get your feet wet. You can try out missions with very little risk, and very little chance to lose anything if you keep your insurance current. Mission running is, I think, a better choice for making money in hi-sec than ratting. Rats just aren't worth much in high-sec. Running missions has the added bonus of raising your standings, and sometimes getting good items from agents (as well as building up LP).

I poked around in high-sec for a little, then jumped to 0.0 and never regretted it. But I'm the kind of guy who prefers 3-week summer courses that last all day instead of twice a week semester-long classes.

Aye, I believe 0.0 will appeal to me much more than high-sec. I was borne from the days of good ole Ultima Online (pre-trammel). No place was safe! Either you learned and got skill, or died horribly, again and again, and losing anything on you (even house keys). I really enjoy tense pvp. Allies and enemies on all sides! Whee!

Just... not when I'm doing my masters. ;)
