Give these a shot- a few to play with, let me know if you have any other ideas (or message Occlusion in-game)..

(I didn't include 'watch' because I couldn't make it look good, instead I did an EW logo kinda... see what you think; also that should be a transparent png, let me know if XCode doesn't like it.)

This is great! Icons? Icons? Did you say icons? (see sig)

I do icons for a living. I'd gladly help you out a bit, bump me up on IM or email (ingame is fine too).

Oh, as a P.S.; would it be possible to let it generate a CalendarStore event, for like, iCal / Mail with the appropriate 'alerts'? That would be my dream feature, to export a skill end time to iCal.

I was considering iCal integration too - I'm new to Cocoa development so it might be a while till I figure that out (a while being a few weeks).

I was hoping you'd see this post - I'd seen your work from a post in another thread and your icons are bloody awesome. I'll IM you tonight when I get home - I'm at work at the moment.

Well done Alex, that looks really cool and the iCal integration will be really handy. I guess you could setup alerts and emails and all manner of cool stuff.

I think you may develop a bit of a fan club ;-)

I think I could live with a fan club :)

Still working on the app - I'm running into a bit of trouble with Xcode 3's garbage collection but I'm working hard to push through it! Hopefully I'll have a christmas present for y'all.

Do you have anything to publish yet? Source code and stuff or maybe a alpha version of the binary?

PS: will it be opensource?

Nope, it's pre-alpha, as in - it doesn't work when I turn on garbage collection, but I want garbage collection on so I'm going through fixing it now. Also there's no way to add custom characters in yet, I had to write 1-time code to write my character data out into a plist for it. Once the garbage collection issues are sorted out I still have to get it to match skill ID numbers with actual skills and write the interface for adding custom characters in etc. My aim is to have *something* to release by Christmas Day, but depending on family stuff it may be a bit longer.

PS: Nope.
PPS: Aww, shucks!

Okay. It's working with garbage collection, it's fetching skill data from the EVE servers, it's fetching character data from the preferences instead of being hardcoded...

It's now nearly at a stage where I can build a copy of it and use it for myself. Still to do:

  • Obey CCP's cache timings for the data.

  • Cache the skill data (list of skills and corresponding IDs)

  • Handle lack of internet connectivity gracefully

  • Preferences window for adding/removing characters

  • Growl support

  • iCal support

  • New app and menu icons

I am still working on this - it's looking less and less likely that I'll hit my target to release by Christmas Day though. But, hopefully by this time next week you should all have it in your menubars counting down with your skills :)

Getting close now. I've completely rewritten it so it's much more streamlined and only updates the menu every second when the menu is actually open - when it's closed it updates every 60 seconds. It's caching skill data now and obeying CCP's cache timings. It'll update skill data (the big list of every skill) once a week (about 350kb download) and your character's skill information every 60 seconds, although CCP passes a "cached until" property with the skill updates and it'll never check again until that time has expired. Looks like CCP caches it for 15 minutes so your skill info will be updated every 15-16 minutes. It also handles a lack of internet connection gracefully.

I still have to do the preferences window so you can add your own characters, growl support and iCal support and I'm waiting on new icons from Cocoi.

I think the ETA at the moment is a rather fitting Soon(TM) :)

You indicate that your little project is NOT open source. So, you get bored, leave EVE, get hit by a bus.......your users/supporters are s.o.l.

Even Battleclinic (EVEMON) knows the value of open sourcing the code so that MULTIPLE folks can work on the project, and that way if someone 'leaves', it doesn't get orphaned.

In four years I've seen a zillion of these doo-dad applications come and go, and the ones that stick.......are ALWAYS community supported. The more eyes on the code, the better the resulting product.

I'd highly recommend you open it up, so your fellow mac hackers can dig in and assist you.......you'd be surprised by the results.

First of all, yes, my "little project" is my project. It's not open source because I don't want it to be. Trying to bully me into opening it up won't work, since I have a reason to keep it closed source - it's the project I'm using to learn cocoa. It's not meant to be the app to end all EVE apps - be lucky that I'm even making it public. The original plan was to write it for myself until I spoke to a couple of people about it and they convinced me to write it well enough to be released.

This is a strictly "you get what you're given" scenario. The only time it'll need updating once I release it is if CCP significantly change the API or if bugs are found.

I don't want fellow mac hackers to dig in and assist me, since that would negate the point of me having to learn it to be able to do it for myself. It's a tiny little menubar app to track a skill countdown dude, not an EVEMon replacement. I'll leave a project as big as that to someone else.

As Greg Dean from Real Life Comics says about his comics - I'm doing this for myself. If it's no longer fun I'll stop doing it. I don't particularly care about it "sticking" - it's going to be here to use if people want to - if they don't, so what?

Also, don't start off your post on an insult and expect to get a nice reply back. Anyway - it's Christmas for ****s sake, did someone **** in your coffee?

EDIT: Also, what do you care? You don't run OS X. Oh wait, you're one of these open source zealots. Newsflash: Open source doesn't automatically make something better, it just puts the potential there. There's some open source stuff out there that's absolute rubbish.

And for anybody thinking I have a sinister intent for keeping it closed source - please, please use a packet sniffer on it when it's released. The only communication it does is with http://api.eve-online.com/ and it'll stay that way unless somewhere down the line I decide to put in auto-update.

Whoa there nelly!

First if you think that was an insult, then perhaps you should check YOUR coffee or whatever. My point in the opening statement was in regard to those folks who might come to depend on your project. I read that back and I still don't see any insults. -shrugs.

You accuse me of much, and assume more. You are creating a project for the community to use. My response was meant to be helpful and to enable you perhaps to a project that could grow and become something the MAC community could depend on.

You have no idea what I do or do not use for a computing environment other than the screen shot in my signature.

As for zealot, I'm not a stallmanista (google richard stallman if you don't get the reference). I do however have FOUR +YEARS in EVE and have been extremely visible in the tech forum and now the linux eve client forums trying to help folks with issues and technical problems. I am an EMERALD transgamer, which, by the way isn't open sourced either, but uses and supports open source projects.

Your vitriolic response to what was intended as an honest and helpful bit of advice after seeing so many projects fall by the wayside and leave users stranded strikes me as juvenile and uncalled for.

So, good luck on your little learning project. For your next project, I would hope you would learn that being a little less defensive would go a long way to being a good member of our community.

I've been playing EVE as various characters since beta, so don't pull your long service on me. I don't really care how visible you've been, reading me your resume isn't going to change my opinion.

It wasn't so much what you said, it was more your condescending tone that I took offence to. People that come to depend on my project do so themselves, I'm not trying to create any sort of following here - I just thought "Hey, I'm writing this thing and it could be useful to other people so here you go, when it's done, y'all can have it". I'm not creating a project for the community, I'm creating a project for me and letting the community use it.

You mention that you're an emerald Transgamer - if it's not open source but uses open source projects would that not make it morally wrong? Surely they should open up their source too.

As far as being a member of the community - been there, done that. I was even a DJ for EVE Radio back in the day.

Also, Mac is not an acronym. It's a shortened version of Macintosh and as such does not need to be written in all caps.

As always, my policy is "if you don't like it, don't use it". Or you could always write one yourself.

Sevarus (kudos for spelling there by the way), don't let the door hit you on the ass on your way out.

Good Grief!!

It's a neat app(widget) that suits some mac-users needs, if it stops working then it's no big deal as it's free and Eve is just a game.
Anyone that "relies" on free apps for their "gaming" needs to get out more.

Having said that... any news on the latest update Alex? Wink
