In the short time that I have been a player in EVE and a member of Goonswarm, I've observed the incredible amount of hatred and rage that many players feel toward each other, and other corporations. The endless trolling, the smack talk in Local, and a general feeling of contempt between opposing parties. I've seen some few examples of mutual respect, but they appear to be few and far between.

When I fly through space not owned by my Alliance or allies I feel a kind of cold distance between myself and other pilots. No one seems to want to take time to talk before opening up with all guns. Is padding your killboard with my frigate so important, when maybe I just want to talk? Do you feel threatened? My Incursus can't hold a candle to your Vagabond, so why not chat a little? Inter-Alliance communication would be so much more vibrant if there was a greater willingness to communicate.

Where does all this hate come from? I can see that the older generation of players have a long list of grudges and slights and other insults they are trying to avenge, but what about new players? Do we have to adopt the anger and rage of our elders? Should we allow ourselves to be infected by their hate?

I'm not calling for an end to fighting. Most of our ships are designed for the sole purpose of burning other vessels into floating scrap. But wouldn't it be a more beautiful universe if we, the newer generation of players held a greater mutual respect for each other? The hope of the younger generation is their unstained hearts- we haven't had the time to become so jaded or angry that we shut out everyone except our own corporation. We should reach out to each other in the interest of making -everyones- experience better.

Maybe next time you find yourself hovering over the wreck of your enemy, you might try convoing them instead of podding. Who knows, you might make a new friend.

I am disappointed that you feel this way.

Have you ever listened to that song "The Sound of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel? They sing of people being unable to share their true feelings with one another. I feel you must have something seriously troubling you if you believe a Goon is incapable of positive thought towards others.

Dafuzz, you commented earlier that what I envision is impossible- or at least that's how I interpreted your 'nope' response. I saw it as a refusal to embrace the possibility that better relations between players and corporations are possible.

Now I haven't been around very long, but it looks like you have a lot of people here on the forums who think you're a pretty chill guy regardless of who belongs in which corporation. Do you honestly feel that it would be better if those people hated you instead?

Would you describe yourself as the member of the 'old guard' I mentioned? Filled with bitterness and hate to the extent that they no longer consider open communication to be either viable or desirable? Isn't there some part of you that sees this as a truly sad state of affairs?

I've barely posted on this forum before, waiting and getting my bearings in the EVE world and meta-world, and already I'm being called a fakeposter. Honestly, it does make me feel sad. I know EVE is described as being a sort of cold, dark world, but it's also totally open-ended. We can bring some warmth into it if we choose to.

Maybe we could have a universe wide mining op, where every pilot could come to 0.0, and mine the good ores, without having to worry about pirates, or wars.

We could shoot npc rats side by side with our enemies, and relisters would pledge to sell only those products they produce. Imagine how inexpensive t2 gear could be if we all just pitched in together for a weekend, call it EVE Armistice, from say, Friday the 22nd to Wednesday the 26th (yes, this isn't the weekend, but it would make Lennon proud--Lenin, not so much).

Indeed, there is a significant amount of vitriol between not only new players and older players, but between other groups of players in general. I cannot but help ponder the significance of this when applied to a broader social view. It saddens me when I think of those who will come after me, and what they will miss out on. They may never know the love of a forming conga-line around a gate with your enemy. They may never know the true happiness I experience when I know another will use my modules even after he killed me. It is a shame. In closing, I'd like to share with you some lyrics that I feel we should all take to heart, Whitney Houston's "The Greatest Love of All"

Did you know that Whitney Houston's debut LP, called simply Whitney Houston had 4 number one singles on it? Did you know that, Dafuzz? It's hard to choose a favorite among so many great tracks, but "The Greatest Love of All" is one of the best, most powerful songs ever written about self-preservation, dignity. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it's not too late to better ourselves. Since, Althair Erin, it's impossible in this world we live in to empathize with others, we can always empathize with ourselves. It's an important message, crucial really. And it's beautifully stated on the album.

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be

And if by chance, that special place
That you've been dreaming of
Leads you to a lonely place
Find your strength in love
