Temak, you are right, not only on the moral issue of charging full price to mac users for a game that is not fully developed and tested, but on the issue of our complacency. Nothing gets done by reading other peoples posts, we do indeed have a right and a moral obligation to shout out if we're not happy, and more people should excercise this right.
However, I am just grateful that I have something other than WoW to go on, and when I started my account, I knew that the mac client was in it's infancy and that there would be teething troubles, and I accepted this risk, at least for a month or two, to see how it goes. After todays patch, it seems a lot of my gripes have been sorted out, and I expect nothing less than this in forthcoming patches.
*stands on soapbox*
In this world in which we live however, nothing is perfect. Washing machines break after a year's use, a third of all new cars sold have faults within the first year, post arrives days late and on a more personal note, I feel that the ratio of licorice to sugar in Bassett's licorice allsorts is proceeding in totally the wrong direction. In short, in constantly expecting perfection, we are living in a state of permanent disappointment.
Eve is a game, and a pretty damn good one. If you aren't willing to put up with the faults or are getting frustrated that the faults are not being addressed quickly enough, then try again in a few months.
But to me, for the price of 2 pint's of Stella a month, I feel I am getting a good return. Not a fantastic one, but a good one all the same.
*bows, gets down off soapbox*
That feels better.

Yesterday 12/17/2007 - I dealt with about 1 crash every 2-4 hours.
Today 12/18/2007 - The client opens for five seconds, crashes totally, and then exits. No error messages or anything come up after the 1.0.1. Patch. OS X Leopard is running. Doing a fresh install. Upgrading RAM later some time.
System info below: Model Name: iMac Model Identifier: iMac5,1 Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz Number Of Processors: 1 Total Number Of Cores: 2 L2 Cache: 4 MB Memory: 1 GB Bus Speed: 667 MHz Boot ROM Version: IM51.0090.B09 SMC Version: 1.9f4 ATI Radeon X1600:
Chipset Model: ATY,RadeonX1600 Type: Display Bus: PCIe PCIe Lane Width: x16 VRAM (Total): 128 MB Vendor: ATI (0x1002) Device ID: 0x71c5 Revision ID: 0x0000 ROM Revision: 113-xxxxxx-139 EFI Driver Version: 01.00.139
Edit: Did a fresh reinstall of the game. It did nothing, it still crashes after 1-3 minutes of being open. I figure I'll be canceling my account sometime soon then. If there is some other way to play, or fix I don't know of beyond a complete reinstall, post it.
Otherwise its back to my Wii until CCP and Transgaming can test patches a bit more thoroughly before releasing. Its a tough lesson to learn, and after playing many MMO's most companies still don't have it down. Get a patch to Gold Master, then test it for 90-140 days straight, then release it. Make them big, make them fat, and make them impressive - but make them well tested. |
