The news headline mentions a sneak peak :
"12.10.2007 15:38:04 Trinity: The expansion you have to see We're getting an expansion this winter, and it's real shiny. In fact, it's so shiny that we had to add a lot of other things just so you could see how shiny it is. Its shininess includes 50 man-years of work remodeling all spaceships, stargates and station exteriors and interiors, plus all the improvements and additions that go hand in hand with introducing this kind of burning luminosity. It is, in fact, a brand new graphic engine, tuned and tweaked with everything from asynchronous resource loading to intelligent fallback mechanisms to give the best performance possible, and we're very proud of it.
To show off its shininess we're adding a host of Tech II ships that include the eerie Black Ops, the spearheading Marauders and the warp-jamming Heavy Interdictors, not to mention the lockdown terrors that are the Electronic Attack Ships, and the masters of the supply chain, the Jump Freighters. That's not to mention an abundance of PvE content, including hundreds of new kill missions, and various game advancements ranging from improved drone management to new booster production regions. EVE, our tranquil and magnificent vision, has been given a terrifying new beauty. You'll need to see this.
Here is a sneak preview of what you can expect once EVE Online: Trinity hits your screen. This is work in progress; it will get even better."

hmm... sorry to be all negative but I get a much better sense of scale with the old model.. whats the deal with the texture on that new geddon? exactly how 'work in progress' is it? |

Yeah the textures get a bit overwhelmed by the shiny light which looks a bit odd. It looks as if the phallic ship was drenched in a liquid of some sort |

They've decided to go from the gritty dirt and rust look to a metal-weathered, almost brushed metal appearance. Not bad.

Seen it now, looks very sharp. Cant wait to see how the Megathron is going to look. Im a bit interested in this new "jump freighter" they are talking about, though if the name indicates anything im guessing it means low and null sec only. |

I like it. It might be a bit bright yah but thats just the brightness of the incoming light , not the model itself. Windows do indeed look a lot bigger which, if you really start thinking about it, would lessen the scale of things. Notice the 3 turret slots on top of the arma now instead of the 2 there used to be. I'm not totally convinced to be honest, needs more "badassyness" but its a work in progress so |

it was more the little details on the original.. the tiny specs of light on the texture that represent windows.
space being what it is, being being largely empty, its hard to gauge any sense of scale. reference points in the environment are just too big for the eye to comfortably use to work out ship sizes - ie planets etc.
thats why you need consistant detailing that you can easily relate to like windows/hatches etc. things you easily perceive as being human size. thus enabling you to guage how big these ships really are. the 'windows' on that geddon are huge now compared to the original. it makes it look much much smaller.
maybe im just being picky. i know nothing on making games. but if i was going to spend 50man years redoing all the ships in the game id probably want to sit everyone down first and go "hey chaps. a rifter is this big.. a apoc is this big. lets try and make sure this new snazzy engine can really show people the difference".
meh. im sure it will be alright in nov. |

Well generally speaking, feeling of size is something EVE isnt good at, sadly. Planets never feel WOOW when you get close to them. And the point with the small windows making it look bigger has a valid point, human reference size is imoportant.
But i know CCP is doingt the best for us, so hopefully they will fix it. (and please make the capital ships bigger :) |

Edited by: Gnulpie on 12/10/2007 22:34:07 Sorry to say so ... but I like the old model more.
It is much darker and that reflects the nature of the Eve universe so much better.
The new one is too bright, too shiny. Things are not that bright in space. Also: Eve is a dark and mean universe, the ships shouldn't be fluffy and nice and bright either. They should be dark and mean.
Edit: Yes, the windows are FAR too big also. That is a battleship which is really huge. You shouldn't be able to see such large windows. But all in all nothing that can't be changed. A texture here, some color there. The geometry looks okay! |

You say that those small yellow lights all around the ship are the windows and they are too big? I find them ok, and they give the idea of how big the ship is. Althought it's still difficult to really get the sense of size in the open space.
I really like the new model. Correct me if the small yellow 'lights' aren't the windows. (any graphics designer here?). |

I really don't like the new skin. The model itself is fine, just the texture needs more work/detail put in... I hope it's not a 512x512 texture for final release. The current Armageddon model+texture is WAY better! |

I understand what people are saying about the sense of scale and all... but am I the only one that saw the window textures on the new Geddon and thought "Well, that part is the Work-In-Progress bit"? Seriously, if the window texture on the new geddon is proportioned the same way as the old Geddon, I think it will be just fine. |

Edited by: Calimor on 13/10/2007 00:19:03 As a digital artist, I think that is the worst "sneak preview" of all the batch of new ships.
As previously mentioned, the windows are giant, and they don't seem to "match" the model like the old texture.
The sense of scale is absolutely awful. |
