I know is a crazy thing to think, but I might be causing the server to crash. I know that is nuts. The server has crashed at 3 or 4 times today at the exact same point in the mission I am trying to do. It is Angel Extravaganza, right when the last boss spawns, before the bonus room, his two spider drones appear with him and start going 5000m/s towards me and then the server starts to lag, and eventually crashes. Maybe it has nothing to do with it, but 3 (or 4?) times in one day at the exact same point in the same mission this has happened. I most likely have nothing to do with it and it is just a freaky coincidence, but I had to say something.

I keep getting to run the mission over and over again which is kind of nice because I make like 15 million each time plus loot and salavage. Cool
I been wondering the same thing. Guriast Extravagansa here and game has crashed between the first and second room.

I'm wondering if it's the missions in general... during both lvl 4 missions i have tried to do tonight the server has crashed on either the next stage spawn (2-spawn mission) or gone down during the penultimate spawns of the current lvl 4 mission i was doing -stranding my ship in the middle of being attacked by the level bosses Evil or Very Mad

But I do. I set a longish one training yesterday evening, and it finishes in 3 and a half hours. But I haven't been able to login since yesterday evening to put a longer one on. Maybe before the next patch I should cancel my account for a month and set a really long skill.

As soon as I saw the first traffic advisory i switched to a 1 day skill :) I learned the last time!

On a side note, I've been playing since sunday night. This is not looking good. Hopefully this gets fixed. No way am I going to pay for a game that is this inconsistant. I do know this is a recent problem not an on going one from people I've talked to about this stuff.

I'd like to make a suggestion to the devs or the server guys.

I'm 42 years old and an old salty IT director with a lot of system design, deployment, and programming in my background (Like 20 years worth).

Here's the advice:

Take the cluster offline... for a day.... or two... and find out what the hell is going wrong.

Two things will happen:

1. Your users will whine at first, but when you fix it you'll be a hero.

2. You will anger fewer users by announcing a plan.

However, if the systems in question have to be running under load to be debugged- then we are all screwed.

But with this many failures- I would not risk the corruption of such a large database. And MSSQL can *really* get fuxored up by repeated reboots after failures.

That's my opinion- but it's your business.

CCP, please follow this guy's advice!

I think he means SOE = Sony Online Entertainment. If you don't know them, feel lucky.

At least the first 3 failures (over the last 24 hours) were before the patch was to be deployed so I doubt it is to blame.

Most of you also seem to have no idea how hard it is to have a high volume, high availablility system.

Oooh, oh, oh, I know this one. It's quite hard?

FWIW, I specified, built and wrote some of the connection code for one, and I'm just a little confused, maybe a little amused that it's this hard to keep the servers up at the moment, given that there is a 'hardware' failure. Given the 'high availability' portion of the equation, perhaps a hot standby replacement is in order?

Originally by: Agent Li

There are few high volume, high availability systems that support even 10% of the simultaneous users that Eve supports. The transaction volume also has to be extremely high.

Note the above about hot standby. Even a cold standby would be handy. As for the transaction volume, yes, I daresay it is. Is it a lot more than yesterday? Will it be more tomorrow? Is someone completely incapable of making the judgement that it's about time that there was some fallback measure?

Software and its underlying hardware is not as simple as some of you imagine - otherwise, you would all be out there, making money as software architecture gurus with equally impressive systems in your experience.

Nah, they pay bugger all for implementation, it's the owner of the system that rakes in the cash. All your fancy code doesn't amount to a hill of beans when you work for a fixed price or wage. Nice strawman, though. Loving your work.

Originally by: Agent Li

I'm surprised there isn't a whole day down every week, for scheduled maintenance and testing of deployed features (test servers are never the same as the production servers).

They get 7 hours. Ask yourself what happens in that one hour a day. Clearing caches? Defragmentation? Just rebooting the whole thing to avoid it crashing more drastically.

Incidentally, you really *do* want to keep your test servers in sync with your live servers to make sure that you can track problems.

Stop your whining.

This is me starting. Something is terribly wrong and we did get a rather smug notice of '600' bugs being fixed before November. This is the same as something being '40% better', and doesn't indicate a) the total number of outstanding bugs. b) the earliest bug in the list. c) Why it's taken this long to announce that they're taking charge of stuff that isn't 'Heat'(tm). Some of us _are_ software and hardware professionals and have been around since before the huge numbers of people joined the game. We _are_ seeing a degeneration in the availability as the volume goes up.
