The more i play eve the smaller the universe seems to become.

Since I have started playing this game the eve universe has gotten allot smaller. Due to things such as wtz, clone jumping, and jump drives, and more recently jump portals.

All of these things have been added for the sake of better gameplay, but the end effect is that they have made the eve universe seem allot smaller.

Ambulation will put the universe to scale, but that still will not effect how big the universe appears to someone piloting their ship.

Wtz, clone jumping, and jump drives made the universe smaller by removing the time sink that it took to move from one place to another. But time sinks are not a good thing, and i am glad they are all here.

Exploration made the universe seem a little bigger by adding more content in each solarsystem. But only if you were looking for it, for someone who likes to pvp the universe still seems small.

In kali (i.e. rev1 for the noobies) they opened up alot of new regions. And it really had no effect on how big the universe was perceived.

I think that CCP should work on adding more content to each system to make it seem bigger. Exploration brought a little bit, but has not brought enough to make much of a difference. And ambulation will make it seem a little bigger, but once you are out in your ship I dont think the universe will seem any larger.

Here are several ideas that I have that would make the eve universe seem alot bigger. I think that the more time you spend in one system the bigger that system seems to be, so if we get alot of content in each system, then each system will seem alot larger.

I think that one way it could be done it to introduce a system where planets, belts, moons, etc are hidden by default. And the players must find them via exploration, but the difference would be that these items are permanent, and once you find them the icon would appear on overview, right click, etc.

This would make it so that if you go into unknown territory you have to explore it to find everything in it.

It could also be setup so that the more you find the harder it is for you to find the next object (especially with belts), so going into a virgin system you would find the planets and a few belts quickly (depending on the system), but the more you find the harder it would be to ping down the next item. So systems could have belts/moons that would literally take months to scan downRazz

This could also be used with exploration sites, if you are scanning for a site from a easy to find planet you will get a 3/10 plex, but if you scan down a plex from a planet that took you months to find your reward could be a 9/10 plex.Very Happy

yes, but then you'll need a way to share that info with corp/alliance (even sell it through contracts). obviously bookmarks are bad option. a lot of work... only worth it if done nicely ("make it so it doesn't suck").

I agree with some of what you had to say. I do want the Eve Universe to seem larger. I know exactly what your talking about.

I think the key would be like you said, adding more content to solar systems.

I don't know if making everything hidden is the answer though. The reason why solar systems seem small at the moment is that most of what we interact with in a solar system is useless.

Examples:

Star - can't do anything with them

Planets - can't do anything with them

Moons - can't do anything with them (other than put up a moon station)

Asteroid Belts - you mine them, kill rats

Stations - sit in your ship and do your work (when we can get out that will make stations a million times more fun)

So basically there are very few things in solar systems that make it seem large.

Now if we have interactive stations it would be better, but still small.

Exploration has helped, but there isn't that much content atm.

There are tons and tons of empty AU out there in a single star system. Let the players have the ability to fill it up. Player driven content will make things much better.

Plus add more NPC content of course.

The beacon can probably be setup so it blocks anything from being bookmarked within a certain distance. (say 100000km?) Natural phenomenon are disrupting it or some other excuse.

If you found the belt then it would be up to you on who to give it to. ANd you would do that by forming a gang and warping out to the object. So you could have an asteroid belt that only your corp knows about. Or try to keep it between as few members as possible.

It could also protect you from hostiles, maybe the belt could reduce your ships effective sig radius by a certain factor determined by the sig radius of the plex. So if held a home system for a year you would almost definetly have some very very low sig raduis belts. Making them good hiding places against enemy forces.

But in the meantime i think ccp needs to double the spawn rate & amount of exploration & encounters.

Its a space RPG, not Sims 2 Holiday...

Tbh, CCP need to fix the server lag before anythings, if this lag continues, imagine how bad it will be when there are 30 odd people walking around a station, it bad enough sitting in a station in you ship typing in local chat..

Do you realize that scaning ppl/enemys down in belts will be almost imposeble? I like idea in general but all that hiden stuff is not the good thing to me tbh. I dont want spend 1-3 months to scaning for an asteroid belt or hiden complex. NEED FOR SPEED FTW!!!!

Time to bump this thread again.

Eve needs to be bigger, agreed.

More solar system content will help. But lets face it: Eve is becomming more and more simmilar to RL:

Crowded systems "everywhere", rushhours, traffic advisories in locations where such things used to be unheard of. Availability of in-game servises and functions is worse due to population growth and financial growth.

Hopefully CCP will realize that as the number of players rise, and the average SP of each player rises, more space will be required.

If Eve is to completely loose the sence of SPACE (a huge area with lots of things unknown/explorable to the individual), then all we are left with is a game that primarily consists of mathematical understanding of game mechanics.
It is becomming ever more obvious in the way people play. More and more focus on game mechanics, and proportionally lesser about gaming experiences.

Don't get me wrong: Game mechanics always have been, is, and always must be an important part of Eve. It has been a major contributor to creating the increasing, and for many, long lasting interest for the game. But at the same time it is important that the sense of space is maintained.

It's understandable that intoducing vast amounts of new solar systems is technically difficult to do. But it will, I believe, be one of the more important improvenments to the game that CCP has to do.
Problems like too far traveling distances (without jump drives) to Empire can be reduced by introducing NPC/faction colonies (5-10 systems controled by the various factions). These systems can be a combination of low- and high sec. Or maybe start out as NPC/non-conquerable 0.0 systems, then over time gradually have their sec status increased. This can also be tied in to the so called "faction wars" CCP tries to breath life into.

The bottom line is the game needs to be about more than tecnical issues like ship types, modules, rigs, scrips, bonuses etc. It needs a certain element of adventure, a virual experience that superceeds what RL has to offer. What has been lost over the past few years needs to be reclamed.

Remember: there's no substetute for space . . .

I agree, everything should serve a purpose. granted CCP only have a certain amount of time and staff, it would be nice if they could focus on non ship and mod related stuff for a season/patch and really flesh things out.

With factional warfare comming up, looks like CCP have beer (?<- weird typo Shocked)..I mean nerfed themselves when it comes to working on other aspects of eve.

The link below is an idea related to making space bigger. The idea is part of a larger idea, but can be seen as seperate although would require modification is some regarards.

cool idea....but missing plenty of things.
In lots of space movie and soap you can see number of things in space, like :
- strange plant, big huge animal (no life in EVE ?? Crying or Very sad),
- abandoned old civilization ship (rogue drones just aren't enough !!Rolling Eyes),
- complex (ok, exploration gave that to us....but not enough of them),
- astronomic entity (wormhole, solar wind, dead sun, big part of an exploding planet....)
- remarkable place (funny asteroid, space storm, multiple sun system, huge asteroid belt, ice belt (real one, not floating ice), and so on...).

just my 2cp.Wink

anyway /signed even if i don't expect that before 2015...ugh

Regarding multiple sun systems - eve backstory says you can only place gates in systems with binary (or more) star systems. Anyone ever seen more than one star in system?

I agree with alot of what people have said here, especially about the focus on game mechanics. I remember reading a post by someone in the Features and Ideas forum who stated that with many of these new features "CCP is making EVE more complex, but not necessarily more fun."

Ambulation is a nice step for social interaction, (many complain that it adds nothing in terms of useful content to the game). Granted it doesn't make my guns more powerful or allow me to mine more ore, but it adds an extra level of depth to the game.

Upcoming features that are in the dev's "planned" section such as being able to land on planets, set up a small personal outpost, etc would all help make EVE seem bigger and add new goals for players to work towards, which EVE, being a sandbox game as described by CCP, is all about.

This,
also the fact that all these object, except maybe stations, are in fact, small.
Planets and stars are just abit larger then a station. Belts are just small crescent of few rocks.
This kills sense of scale. Bright backgrouds don't help much too.
But most important is WTZ. No one fly around manually, we just hop from one point to another quickly. It's like using teleports.
So, while each system uses semi-real scale in AUs, it doesn't matter much. I'd prefer like 1/1000 of current dimensions, but with normal flight as common way of moving around, and jumping only used between systems and maybe few POI in a system.
