It was exactly 15:00 EVE Time when I went to see my contact in Inner Zone Shipping for the latest inside scoop on the company. I was hoping she would have another job hauling long-limb roes across Placid as there is nothing more enjoyable than gently warping through systems in an Atron. Iíve found it to be very relaxing simply floating in my capsule looking at the images fed to my brain by my trusty camera drones of the various planets passing by and the familiar Doppler shifts tinting everything.

However it was not to be, my contact did have a job for me but this one was rather different than any she had given me before. It was deceptively simply, some of her colleagues had been kidnapped and they wanted me to go retrieve them. They gave me they co-ordinates and told me to go Ďdo my thingí. Never one to turn down a challenge I accepted. No-oneís gonna call me a carebear I thought, wondering not for the first time what a carebear was. Someone had once told me it was something to do with an ancient holoreel found floating among some debris near Amarr but alas I digress.

Oh well, I thought to myself, I get to play test my nice new Incursus. I loaded the Fenrir, as Iíd called her, with my favourite ammunition, some simply thorium charges, and launched out into space. The kidnappers were two systems away so I took the time to familiarise myself with the ships handling before going into battle.

Everything seemed to be in order so I gave my ship the order to jump to the co-ordinates. I came out of warp and there they were right ahead of me. 3 Rookie bounty hunters. And then there were 3 rookie bounty hunter missiles headed straight for me. I dodged the worst of the first onslaught through a last minute course correction but alas the third missile managed to track me and hit my shields. I felt the ship shake as the explosion imparted itís momentum on my hull. Checking the shield meter I was shocked to see that almost an eighth of my shields had disappeared in a single volley. I quickly ordered my ship to return fire and gave a course correction just in time to see another two missiles miss my ship by mere meters. Then, as I looked behind me I saw the one sight that really scares rookie pilot. Missiles turning for another pass. I ordered another course correction, this time vertical hoping to dodge both the old missiles and the two new ones coming at me.

It was then I realised I was in a battle I couldnít win. Despite having almost killed one of their number, I gave the command to warp the ship to the nearest belt whilst I recovered. Then I felt the explosions. The old set of missiles hit first, within a few seconds my shield had gone, then I felt the second impact as the two new missiles hit my armour plating at ripped it to shreds. Finally, just as my ship was lining up for the warp jump I felt another impact. My hull had been ruptured. I spun my camera drones around and saw that my aft port quarter had taken a severe blow and several critical systems were on fire. Thankfully, none had anything to do with the warp and as yet another missile closed on my ship I felt the familiar shake as the ship jumped into warp.

I had a few words with my contact on my return. I never expected a trading company to send me into such brutal combat; Iím only a freighter pilot for heavenís sake! Their response was simple. I may be only a freighter pilot, but Iím still a pilot. I still work for this company but I donít think Iíll ever accept such a mission again. Not until I get a cruiser at the very least but with the way this lot pay me that may take a while.

So if anyone wants to help a humble trader become more combat efficient you know who to write to.

I really enjoyed that, Burga. It reminded me of the second convoy I tried to destroy, when I was in my second week of the game. The first had gone so well that I was eager for another. I found it, only 30km from a station, and I flew right out there in my trusty Atron and started to shoot it up...Very Happy
