two types of tank, shield and armor.

Basically you bump your shields/armor up really high or fit loads of rechargers/repairers.

This means when your hit your shield/armor repairs so quick they cannot damage you further.

Yes - ratting is killing NPC's, pirates are actual players ingame.

There are three types of tanking- active shield, active armour and passive shield. This thread explains them all in great detail

actually, there are a lot of tanks.
tank in short means, able to take hits.

you can have:

active shield tank - just high resistances and shield booster (costs cap)
passive shield tank - boost your shield recharge time (no cap)
active armor tank - armor repper (or 2) and resistances (costs cap)
pure hp tank - just a lot of shield extenders or plates to make sure you hold it out very ****ing long (no cap)
structure tank - damage control, hull repairer, (those hull mods that boost your hull) (repper isn't as good as armor reppers, but it does the trick, all resistances are 50 to 60% all round)
speed tank - going something like 10kms to avoid being hit, mostly minmatar ships use this, or interceptors. just speed mods and MWD and speed implants
