Need good footage to make a new video... and like ALL of our ops are pretty much within the time frame tiscali deny me access Confused

Gave the new ISP my mac today... i will post again when I find out how good they are.

I was merely recommending you take a look at reviews/their website and customer service. Just give them a phone call and you will be impressed, it was really easy and the guy was more than willing to have a normal conversation.

Anyways will give an update Very Happy

Ive heard of one case of an ISP's customer (think it was Vigrin ADSL reported on Thinkbroardband forums) using the unfair contract terms act to get a refund out of an ISP that repeatedly underdelivered on service.

Might be worth thinking about if its true and they wont let you out of the contract.

oook, if you are with Tiscali - and you have been for over a year - with the same package - you can run-away...

I'm going for Fast.co.uk...

Fast - 3 rings - English human - same number for tech-support = great

tiscali - 30minutes of music before you hear some noise on the other end that is ment to be a support tech... as soon as you say "Eve" or "Gaming" - you get "Hello? hello? - click as they hang-up...

i requested my MAC code - upto 5 days - via e-mail and text'd to my phone (just incase they can't take down details properly)...

can't cancel my phone service with them until i sign up for another one (automated apprently)...

This is how:

I called cancelations - after confirming who i was - they asked how they can help - i replied: MAC code please...

Lady asked why - i replied because my unlimited broadband is limited to the point i can't do what i have been doing for 3 years and your solution was to do it out of peak times - which is when i'm either at work or asleep...

Lady asked - would you like me to put you through to our technical support <giggling to myself> i replied: your technical support is not worth the wages they are paid... She said my MAC code will be with me in 5 days...

plus - i will get charged a whole month - for the 5 days until i get my MAC code... I'm cancelling my DD - so they will have to bill me - that way i pay for what i used/couldn't use... i'll fight the thieving gits for that...

Any-hoo - glad this is changing - i'll let you know of any hick-ups...

Be strong fellow tisca-cancel-ors - better to leave the dying rat than put up with it...

May the force be with you all,

Greetings, fellow Tiscali user here and tonight have been "Tiscali'd" for the 3rd night in a row. Just had an conversation with Tiscali support (I use the term very loosely) -

t - "No Madam, we are not closing port 26000 or in any way restricting access to this game server"

me - "then why does my probe port say it is closed?"

Silence as this is not on crib sheet

t - "we'll have to investigate"

So if you would like proof that your ISP is deliberately closing ports go here

Port testing from GRC.com

Stick the port number in the box at the bottom, then click "jump to port". On the next page, click "Probe this port" (Blue button at the top left).

My best advice, (as I am doing), find another ISP. If tiscali say you're tied in for 12 months, tell them

- they've breached the contract (they are supposed to tell you if they are restricting your service)

- that there may be a possible case of fraud (sounds extreme I know, but fraud is defined as "gaining a pecuniary advantage by deception". You could argue that Tiscali are taking your money in return for a service, but intend to limit your access to this service without ever telling you)

- write to OFCOM. Well written letters can have an impact.

Good luck folks and spread the word

i.e. DON'T DO TISCALI

Shad.

You've been wasting your time and money again phoning India. They do not know what's going on.

Tiscali have openly admitted they are causing the problems connecting to Eve and they even tell you what they are doing to cause it.

There is a technical case number running which you can use to get out of your contract.

If you can follow these, we have Tiscali Mod answering questions.
Quotes from Tiscali BB support forums Eve thread:

If this is the case, isn't the traffic shaping meant to happen during peak hours of 6pm to 11pm?
Why then am I unable to connect to eve at 4pm today (and I hear it was unavailable yesterday from 5pm, saturday 3pm, sunday 1.30pm)

1) We are not "blocking" the ports, we are managing the bandwidth for certain traffic types.
2) The peak hours you are quoting are for the FUP only. This is not the same thing. Actual network peak times kicks in arround 15:00 when the kiddies get home from school.

Yes that I understand, but I'm sure Tiscali are just the start of an impending trend. Virgin are at it too so we believe.

With BT announcing a new TV service themselves for this year we may see THE major supplier impliment the same, rumour has it they were going to do it a while ago, but it got put off.

Until some organisation steps in to stop this practice, don't expect it to change, but to spread.

Perhaps some more clarity should be given to what the companies traffic shaping policy means, rather like the unlimited up to 8 meg offers, which the wording of, has been now slightly changed. But are people getting what they think they have signed up to.

Besides , how do you expect to get up to 8 meg if they are only throwing just over 5 at you in the first place, and then throttle it back to just over dialup.

Mackers UK
Posted - 2008.01.10 09:28:00 - [343]

speaking of dial-up - has anyone tried it?

wondering if it might be worth a go...

That would be a great "youtube" video - demonstrating the "upto 8MB" is worse than Dial-up during peak times... Would be a funny video if you included the phone calls to support as "back ground music"...

If you got the skills - get it done - then post the link :P

As mentioned above - it is probably the start of a trend - but there are the odd ISP that currently don't give any restraints - FAST.CO.UK seems to be a good choice - but let me try it out before you all rush there...

There is a european arguement going on at the moment - Holland for example has one of the best infrastructures - charging less than what we pay - BT still uses infrastructure that has been inplace since the 1940's rollout... go figure...

I think tiscali in other countries is ok - (from work clients which vpn - no games on work machines) - it could just be the UK...

If your from further afield - let us know...

If the european arguement gets to court - expect big changes...

Just to add my 0.02. I'm a Pipex customer, have been for years, and have started getting the same connection problems as everyone else here in the past week.
I phoned Pipex customer support who gave me a ticket number and asked for a trace route and speed test when the connection goes again. This is where the rigmarole starts I guess Confused

I've been hearing good things about ADSL24, so if this ins't resolved quickly I'll be getting my MAC.

My best advice, (as I am doing), find another ISP.

The GRC port scan just checks if that port is open on your local computer, doesn't necessarily show if it's being blocked by the ISP.

A better test is to go start->run and type "cmd". Type in "telnet 87.237.38.200 26000" and see what it does. If you get some garbage text then you're connected, if you get "connection refused" or similar error straight away (e.g. within 1 second) then it's possible the ISP is blocking it.

You may not be able to tell the difference between your packets being purposefully dropped and the network being too congested. They don't get there and you don't get any response, telnet will just time out.

Good advice about finding another ISP, waiting for my MAC from Pipex now.

another option is to install wireshark (it's free) se that off to capture all traffic going in and out of your network connection and then start the eve client s up and you can follow the packet requests going out and getting no response and then timing out.

A MAC code is a migration authorisation code which lets you change broadband providers without having to cancel the line and start from scratch. In theory it should happen very quickly and easily, but in practice it is often difficult to get the MAC code out of your old ISP and the new ISP dont migrate you immediately a lot of the time.

Luckily Tiscali are actually quite good at giving MAC codes out from what I have read - they obviously get a lot of practice.
If you are still inside the time of your contract then try quoting the eve access problem ticket number at them. If that doesnt work I have a phone number of a senior guy, but I'm not giving that out till I am free of them.

Yep, downloaded the Eve trial 3 days ago. First day I was kicked off around 5pm for an hour or two, second day I was kicked off around 6-7pm until 12:30, tonight kicked off at 5pm, not able to connect. I called Tiscali last night about this after doing research on my problems and as usuall the indian Muppets said "LOL NOTHING WRONG HERE MUST BE CCP" I told him I was already expecting that, I directed him to this thread and then I directed him to the official thread about it on Tiscali's official forums and he again reiterated "HURRRR, NOTHING WRONG HERE WE DON'T BLOCK ANYTHING." Tiscali's customer support are brutally stupid and worse yet, Tiscali doesn't care. The main problem is that I pay 20 a month for my entire package with Tiscali which includes Phone & Internet and for everything other than Eve the package works ust fine and unfortunately I can't squeese more out of my budget to switch services.

Just posted on Tiscali Eve support sticky. Wanting all people with problems to give feed back.

Quote
"This is just typical. I'm just writing to the team about this (dropping eve) and I received an email from them.
Reads as follows:

"I have just made some changes that should resolve the issue. Can you please get the customers to retest and get back to us ".

Instead of having to post a list of users and ask them to feed back, this concerns all of you in this thread. This is across all network platforms now.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this is either the end of this or at least somewhere near (but not holding my breath).

This is just a shocking level of support! I'll be expecting the same sort or response from Pipex in that case.

Seeing as they are offering you your MAC code are they expecting you to pay for remainder of your contract?

As a long term Pipex user I started experiencing this problem on Tuesday 8th Jan and have had the same issue every evening this week until after 12 midnight when I have been able to connect on both the occaisions I have tried. I still can not get a connection @8.15pm this evening although there is a suggestion on the Tiscali boards that the problem may be resolved.

Never had this problem previously so can only assume that this is as a result of the merging of some policies / technologies / environments since Tiscali took over Pipex. I assume it works during the day but like a large number of Eve players I have to work. Have logged this with Pipex support both by phone and mail but they seem blissfully unaware of the problem despite me advising them that there is an extensive thread on this on the Tiscali Forums. I have even given them the name of the Tiscali technical administrator (Brett) who seems to be genuinely trying to resolve the problem.

I don't have access to the Tiscali forums as I only have a Pipex email address so if anybody could x-post this to their forums to let them know that at least some Pipex customers are still experiencing the problem I'd be very grateful.

that can't be right as the shaping is intermitent, or follows set hours, it's never permanent, check antivirus firewall, and or an old router if you are using one.

I'm a Pipex customer, and I had this issue for a couple of days before Christmas... it seemed to be fine after that, so I thought it was a one-off, but apparently not- I've consistently lost connection to eve during peak hours every day for the past week, and it is driving me nuts! What's worse, is that I'm not in control of my connection, and there's no way I can change ISP, and so have been forced to resort to paying for http-tunnel, which doesn't seem to be a bad solution ($4.99 a month seemed a bit much, but then I did the maths, and it turned out to be only 2.62, which isn't that steep), if a little slow. I really hope they fix this soon, they're supposed to be providing unlimited broadband with no bandwidth restrictions, but the fact that I have to pay extra just to be able to use it properly is, quite frankly, appalling. If I was able to, I'd already be asking for my MAC code, and going to a better ISP. But I guess I'm stuck with them Sad

I have asked Brett from Tiscali if he will give pipex people a place to contact him, bearing in mind he's not customer complaints, nor from the same company (organisation maybe), but someone who I believe is trying to help.
He would be a brave man to say yes.

If you want to know why this is happening look here,

wiki whats traffic shaping page

Read to "Peer to Peer" section there.

and of course the Tiscali thread where he openly says it's that.

They do the traffic shaping , we got caught up in the why's.

Perhaps blame the torrents, or the TV player downloaders.

Whichever way, ccp have said their game is working ok , not their problem.

So it's up to us to hassle and get the ISP's to accept gamers are of little harm and let us through. Relentless nagging of anyone who will listen, is my prescription.

Couldn't connect even after 12 last night - still nada at around 12.30am so missed a skill change Sad. Presumably their "traffic shaping" only switches off when the level of traffic drops below a certain level. Everything fine this morning but have to go out and it will probably be off again by the time I get back. Normally using the weekend to train up lots of short skills this is going to be a nightmare since I suspect the same thing will happen later (I'm assuming this also occurs on weekend evenings?).

My trace doesn't look like its going through any Tiscali servers (all Pipex) although my mail is now routed through tiscali servers so it would seem like they have implemented their "traffic management" on the Pipex servers seemingly whilst knowing they had an unresolved issue with online gaming services.

Brett can always come take a look on here if he's brave enough...

No need to miss a skill change - HTTP Tunnel set up according to this link can burrow me into Eve every time. It's pitifully slow, you can't fly safely, but at least you can get in to change skills.

edit - or use it to dock if you were in the middle of salvaging and got kicked off! Pipex killed me at almost exactly 4 pm here.
