I have the same issue with tiscali, I get locked out at about 7pm every night, i've got my mac code and I'm moving to bethere now but I have found a solution while I wait for my new service.

VPN is its name, I'm sure most of you are aware of virtual private networking, I don't know if any free VPN services are available but I just connect through my uni's vpn service and i can connect to eve fine. I suggest those who have some form of vpn access, work, uni, etc give it a go. I have no noticable lag using this method either so its worth a go.

Sorry if this has already been suggested I cba reading the entire thread :P

I have the same problem as the other Pipex users, they keep trying to blame BT
they are a bunch of proverbial knuckle shufflers, pass the buck at every opportunity, my apologies to CCP for the petition as I though it was EvE at first
now I know its my service provider PIPEX grr arrr

let the ear bashing commence

is this all due to them being taken over by Tiscali?

yes it seems to have started a few weeks after been taken over by tiscali, not suprising they probably run it all on the same infrastructure and settings. btw good luck speaking with india after 1 half hour convo with them they told me both to try using firefox and also try playing at other times in the day!!! well as you can imagine i wasnt best pleased with that repsonse.

Hi All,

So Tiscali sucks - but the big question is - who do we go to?

I've been with tiscali for 3-4 years - no problems at all - only 2 outages in that time - each for an hour or so (used to play and run 10 hour flight campaigns in IL2 every sunday)...

Since i got my missus into EvE (yes i do think i should get a medal) we have had this packet filtering causing both of us connection problems... Wondering if downloading 2x clients - flagged my line as "high usage"... I asked if they could tell me how much i have used over the last few months - or even the last month - they couldn't tell me... Which is BS...

Like most - i don't get home until 6pm - i normally head off to bed around 10-11 (up at 6 the next morning)... which is classed as "peak hours"...

Now - i've been on the phone to them 3 times - 1st guy hung up after i stated it was packet filtering, been in support for 7 years blah blah... That was a 40 minute call - 30minutes on hold waiting for an analyst...

2nd time - the guy didn't have a clue - so i sang, yes sang "let me speaaaak to yourrrr supervisorrrrr - you don't haaave a clueeeee" in no particular tone - repeatidly... After 10 minutes i spoke to the "supervisor"... A little more clearly spoken English was all the difference i noticed... They say "you can not play this during peak hours - please try out of peak hours"...

I can't do it out of peak hours as i am either at work or asleep...

How can you restrict - my unlimited account - without notifying me - they said - Do not play this game during peak hours...

I've got someone calling me at home at 7pm tonight - which i am sure will prove pointless...

So in advance - who should i be looking at for service..? BT, PlusNet, Utility WareHouse, etc...

I wish there was a dedicated group of ISPs - one for film/music downloads (i don't do)one ISP for Mail/surfing (which is what work lunch break is for) - then one dedicated to games (i'd be using that one at home)...

Heck - i'd even pay 30 quid if the damned thing worked...

One question i will ask tiscali and any other ISP - do you packet filter on Business Lines? If they don't - i will change there and then - regardless of cost... I live in the sticks - so 1MB is the fasted i can go - how expensive could any package be with that speed? hehehe...

I'll let you know...

Cheers,

Chris "looking for a gamers ISP" Mackers...

You won't have been using it too much, they have to notify you of a FUP restriction.

You have joined the happy crowd of people getting traffic shaped, they have said they have tried something, which seems to have made it worse.

Here's the support thread link, it's a well known issue, if you can't wait just ask for your mac under the 30 day rule, and quote the main header ref number at beginning of the thread, and ask for it to be texted to you or mailed without any further delay.

I've been with pipex a couple of years, and it seems a few months ago I made the mistake of upgrading to their 8mbps package, and getting tied back in for another 12 months, right before tiscali went and bought them out. Mad

Eve was fine until about a couple of weeks ago when my 2nd eve client would randomly lose connection. This didn't bother me too much... but in the last few days I have not been able to connect to eve at all for several hours at a time on most evenings.

At first I thought it was a DNS issue, I tried using opendns which worked the first time I tried it (or could have been some weird coincidence), and the problem came back the next day. Then on friday morning my net wasn't working at all, so few phone calls later and they tell me I had to use tiscali's DNS, which fixed that. Well now I'm back to square one.

To think I had spent so much time trying to convince the parents to upgrade our pipex package to 8mbps (from 256k), am I now going to have to try to explain we need to change ISP due to some dreadful attempt at traffic shaping? And have to pay some 60 fee or whatever it is for breaking contract? Just so I can play internet spaceships all day? Oh f***ing fantastic.

What am I going do?!

I know, I'll play eve from midnight until god knows what hour, which I've been doing now for the past week. I'm in a mess. Tomorrow I go back to my university routine, though I'll probably just die in a car crash on my way there due to lack of concentration. Also I'm going slightly insane. Laughing

Ah, so this is what it is.

I also have been on Pipex for about 5 years, but changed to the 8MB package about a month ago.

In the last week I've been unable to connect - very slow logons, then stuck at "acquiring bulk data".

If I ever got to the character screen, it had 3 empty squares.

Is there a solution yet?

Im going to recommend someone who i'm going to be switching too in a few days... why? Because i phoned them up on a standard UK land line (not premium rate Bullsh*t) and after two rings a BRITISH person answered the phone, not a machine but an actual english speaking person.

For anyone wondering its www.fast.co.uk, look them up and look up reviews, i have heard NOTHING but good things about this company (i will be switching to them in 1-2 days as soon as my MAC arrives)

Shouldn't we wait until you find out if it can connect to Eve, before following your advice? :-)

Lord Egmond

Good job I checked the forums before cancelling my EVE subscription!!!. I've been a Tiscali customer for years now and have been very happy with the service they provide. So naturally when, about a month ago, I kept getting booted off the EVE server I assumed that it was a CCP issue. Looking at all the posts however, that appears not to be the case!!

After reading all the posts I phoned Tiscali customer services and explained that I wanted my MAC code. The reason being, I planned to change ISP due to the poor service Tiscali was providing regarding being able to connect to the EVE server. I was put on hold while the chap 'looked into it'. To my suprise, when the chap came back to me he didn't promise me an upgrade, he didn't say they were working on it, nor did he try and bull**** me!!. He simply said that my MAC code would be sent to me in the next 5 working days!!!

Reading between the lines you could therefore now be forgiven for thinking that Tiscali have now given up on trying to resolve this issue and have come to the conclusion that its better for them to lose a few EVE users rather than look again at their entire traffic management system.

So who am I moving to..... Probably 'Plusnet' as they have a dedicated 'Gamers' broad band package for 19 quid that looks very good indeed.

Egmond

Ugh, this has been dragging on for far too fecking long to be honest (been god knows how many months for me now), and I'm still annoyed at it as I don't particularly like using tunneling programs (can anyone recommend a good one? HTTP Tunnel is too problematic and Your Freedom is a bit over priced).

I've looked at the various posts on the Tiscali forums about this issue, and generally seems to be the same reply along the lines of "hi, we got your message and added it to the log", and nothing gets done Evil or Very Mad. Yet to register with the forums, you need to register for their forums instead of using your normal login for webmail etc. I don't have the choice of transferring to a different ISP (as much as I'd LOVE to) because it's not in my name but the only way I can get through is by using programs like Your Freedom etc.

So if anyone is actually registered properly on the Tiscali forums feel free to add my name down to it as a user with problems. Only on a 512kb ADSL connection, but this problem has been going on for a long time now, and phoning them multiple times just feels like bashing my head against a wall.

Somehow I doubt they'll do anything amazing in future either... now I have to bum around until after 12am to even log on.

Not impressed (like the rest of us)... Evil or Very Mad

I have read in previous posts that it might be worth contacting Watchdog, OFCOM etc. But has anyone advised the magazines that care about technology, and influence computer users, of this ongoing problem?

I'm thinking of the reporters at the Register:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/odds/about/contact/

...along with other sites like Anandtech, www.mmorpg.com, and I presume there are more. (I'm not an avid gamer apart from this, so I don't read other games sites, but there must be many.)

But surely this would be a way to get through to Tiscali, if it starting becoming an actual PR problem for them? So far I don't think they care at all.

Tried Computer active and web user mags, plus a couple of others. No interest, in fact one of them as they were running their own campaign were quite sarcastic (hypocrytes).

I think watchdog has been tried, I know gadget show were on about the 8 meg speed, but not traffic shaping.

Think main reason is in Tiscalis T and C's. You agree to let them do this.
So all you can do is advise people that for gaming, Tiscali and their subsids may not be suitable.

Or, as I'm doing, you keep working at them till they relent under the pressure and manage to get a solution. The problem/cause has been clearly identified, and they admit it's them.

That's the really annoying part for me. I'm with Pipex. I changed from their 2MB business deal to the 8MB consumer deal, and at no time did they ever suggest (a) the two networks were owned by anyone other than Pipex, and (b) that they would totally nerf what they could previously see I had been using every evening for the last 2 years! I'm completely and ongoingly(?) livid.
