Not entirely sure why the they think they should or can enforce their rules on you in your home...

My parents were never like that anyway, but my roomates dad is a very 'my roof, my rules, I'm the head of this household' type person. But whenever he's stayed here, he's just fit into whatever and however we do things.

Maybe if there's a way you and your wife could assert yourselves in a united front...? A like "Look, we appreciate your concern, but this is our house and we'll do things our way?"
Or would that just cause more trouble?

edit:

If we have an argument, my wife will take their side no matter what.

Doh I've just read that Sad
I take it that it would be unwise to mention to her that they're being unreasonable then...

Buahaha Twisted Evil the revenge...

I have spent a great deal of time thinking about how to get some sweet revenge. Up to this morning, nothing I could think of was free of retaliation. I needed to find out something subtle but at the same time infuriating.

Like every other morning, I was woken up around 5:30AM to the noise of kitchen utensils. As usual, the mother in law already had breakfast prepared. And as usual, it was something that everybody liked except me. I proceeded to make something for myself. Not an easy task, because all my kitchen supplies have been rearranged. Apparently, my organizational skill are not worthy.

Today was groceries day. But since today is also a national holiday, getting groceries is a pain in the rear. No surprise, the task was assigned to me and I was sent alone with a long shopping list. I had to drive 25 miles to find an open store. I finally ended up on a wall-mart, full of people like if it were Christmas because it's the only darn thing open.

Once inside the store, I found myself in the pharmacy section, with the shopping list on one hand, my wallet in the other, looking at the photo of my baby daughter...my precious little girl. And then it hit me! Idea I've been looking at this the wrong way, as a son-in-law. My wife is *their* daughter. I have to imagine myself in the future, as a father-in-law with *my* daughter and a 'despicable' son-in-law of my own. What could really mess up my cool in that situation? Think shameless! Think!

I knew my mother in law will take the bags as soon as I get back home. She will claim I don't know how to store groceries and will unpack every item herself. I looked around, and buahaha... Twisted Evil PREGNANCY TESTS!

Then I thought, one test could mean "OMG what have we done! lets check!". But a whole bunch of them definitely mean "we are looking up to this". So I took 4 packs with 2 tests per pack. Then I went through the rest of the shopping list as quickly as I could. As part of my master plan, I also bought a few toys for the kids as "4 of July" presents.

I got home and put my plan in motion. I proceeded to store groceries on the kitchen. In a flash, the mother in law said some comments about my organizational skills and took over the task. I gave the toys to my kids and got the *video camera* to film my kids playing. As expected, the father in law said something like "a man should help in those tasks" and went to help the old lady in storing the groceries. And then... the master-card moment!

Like in slow motion, I panned the camera and zoomed on them as they took all the tests from the bag, one by one. The OMGWTF on their faces was priceless! I'm going to take some stills from that video and frame them.

They are now on the porch with my wife. They look nervous. They are telling stories about some aunt Susie that had too many kids and was abandoned by her husband. They are telling how impossible it was for aunt Susie to get a new husband with all those kids, and how difficult it was for her to maintain a job in her situation.

Buahaha, I have them on the defense. Yipikaye!

[Nah, that department is up to date. Is mostly the usual "you are not good enough for my daughter" kind of attitude. Like:

Me - Welcome to our new house!
Them - This small matchbox a house? You wish!

Honestly, tell him to **** off.

I don't care who he is, if you're inviting someone into your home and he starts off by insulting it, he's not a person that deserves to be in your house. Your wife hopefully understands; After all, her father is insulting HER house as well.

Um mate. I'd hate to be the nay-sayer on this, but I reckon your plan is going to back-fire on you. (You almost had the right idea when you looked at your own child's picture. You should be shwoing them why you're a good husband, regardless of what they say, not giving them more fule for the fire.)

You stated your wife will usually take thier side on things? Now they're out there 'talking' to your wife? What do you think is going to happen?

You didn't get them on the defensive, you got them on the offensive. Big difference. Bad vibes from this. Oi, if you want to get them away, don't be having them pollute yoru wife's mind with more rubbish.

Meh, what do I know though. Still, this sounds like a really bad Tele show and/or movie.

if they disrespect you, then the give their daughter no self worth, as she chose you as her partner.

the first thing is that you need is your wife to realize that. they are spitting in her face every time they disrespect you.

their parenting skills fail in every respect, there is no reason to listen to their good parenting advice as they have no confidence in their own ability to raise a child to freely choose its own path.

disgusting.

Well, the master plan is still working. I got them off my back. Now something came up on their family and they are cutting the vacations short. They should be leaving by Sunday morning (3 more days).

Thanks again, all of you who have gave me moral support or helped me laugh. I appreciate all your suggestions. I have already tried most of them but it doesn't work. I have observed their greater family for years and I have some theories as per why they are so different.

My collection of theories is called "The Clan". They are based on observations of this and similar families. It is quite funny and entertaining. I might post a short version of it, but that should be another thread.

Oh God, that kind of act would choke me. Seriously, do you owe them a massive amount of money or somesuch? Smarmy comment at the door? Well you're not coming in then. The most worrying part of your predicament is that your wife will side with her own parents rather than the man she's supposed to love, whom they are attempting to trample.

Perhaps I'm foolish and have too much pride, but they would be booted oh so very quickly. Then I'd discuss with the woman who swore at marriage that she loves me more than anything else in the universe "until death do us part" why she keeps turning on me. Or more specifically, why she wants to help her own parents put down her own husband. That's messed up in itself! A quick psychologist profiling apparently says that she's still trying to win their love and admiration, which is a serious issue with itself. (Yeah, currently living with a shrink. It's very interesting).

Their "rules" would especially grind me. Due to my physics background, having some in-law parents dictating what is and isn't healthy due "radiation" or what not is so incredibly obnoxious that I wouldn't be able to stand it! I mean, master's degree in physics versus "but radiation is bad!".

Still, you're in a bad cage right now, trapped basically so, *manhug*. Sorry for ranting myself. I guess I get too caught up in stories occasionally. Confused

-Rag

(I don't mean for you to be offended or insult you or your family, obviously I know very little about this story, it's just an initial and very shallow impression! Smile)

Ragnarohk,

I'm not offended at all. My situation is ... erm ... challenging. To fully understand you would need to know the full history of the greater family. But you are right on track, winning parents approval/admiration is part of the bigger picture. A very important part. Not only the parents but the greater "extended family" that I call The Clan.

Patch86,

YES DUDE! I got it on film! But I don't know if I will keep it though. I fear retaliation from The Clan. So far no one noticed my master plan at work. I prefer to keep it that way.

I know I'll sound like a ass here but seriously grow some balls and put your foot down.

It's your house, you earned it.
Since it's your house, it's your rules and no one elses.
If they have a issue with your rules, point them to some cheap hotels.
If they don't like the house or the rules, tell them they can buy you a bigger house and make the payments and you will abide by their rules.

They come to your house. They treat you like ****. They insult you. They belittle you. I don't care if their in-laws, outlaws, by-laws, or total strangers, that is downright rude and uncalled for. If they don't like it, oh well tough ****. Tell them they will get respect when they give respect in your house.

As for your wife, she needs to learn to cut the cord and stand up to her parents which is what I'm seeing here unless the whole story isn't being told.
If she gets mad at you for talking back to her parents then let her know that your sick and tired of the abuse. It doesn't matter if it's 2 weeks or 2 months you don't need that crap. You 2 have a life together and it's your life together, not the in-laws. That is your kid, and again, your rules for raising it.
If this ends up in a divorce well I'm sorry but that's just a petty reason to divorce.

You can't run the rat maze forever. Eventually you will see theres no exit.

My apologies if I offend anyone with this thread.

jesus man there is no way on this earth i would put up with 1/1000th of what you seem to go through, i would have picked up their bags at the first insult and slung them through the door saying "My house, treat me with some damned respect or don't come back!!", plan's are o.k but maybe you need to show them that your willing to protect their daughter as they don't seem to think you have a spine, personally i would have told them to go forth and multiply with 18million camels myself.
but hell maybe i'm just strange like that

He has to be careful his misses doesn't cut them right back off for doing this to her parents. Speaking from personal experience, many women are irrational, emotionally-insecure wrecks; to attack her parents insults would be misconstrude as an attack on her.

Nah, I have done that in the past. It only made things worst. There are times to have a pair, there are times to use the brains. There is too much at stake:

This should be avoided.

Heh, you have my deepest sympathies.

Canīt comment that much as I donīt have the hands on view, but Iīll say youīre doing quite good, up till now.
Maybe you should try to get the wifey more on your side.
I guess itīs your remarried status that has them all(including wife) hot and bothered.

Their rules are really funny, although you shouldnīt dismiss the microwave one lightly.

Try this experiment: boil water in a microwave and water a plant with it(cooled off of course Wink ) . Then try the same with normally cooked water on another plant. Preferably of the same sort and if possible young plants.

Do this a couple of weeks, if the nuked water plant holds out this much.
Bottomline, microwaving DOES do weird things with food.
But donīt believe the internets or inlaws, check it out yourself.

Maybe you even could turn it into some kind of "Your inlaws made me think" thing. Placating the missus a bit.Laughing
