Some mods say "Penalty: Using more than one type of this module or similar modules that affect the same attribute on the ship will be penalized." I was wondering, how are they penalized exactly?? is it diminishing returns (first mod gives full, second mod gives 80%(or random percentage) of max) or just a split (first mod gives 80%, second mod gives 80% for a total or 160%) or is it completly different, if it is please explain. Ive been trying to figure this out for a while now.

It's diminishing returns. The more mods you put on your ship affecting the same attribute, the more the weaker mods are penalized (it's my understanding that if some mods are better than others, it's the weaker mods that get the heavier penalties).

f(1) = 1
f(2) = 0.8708860
f(3) = 0.5705831
f(4) = 0.2829552
f(5) = 0.1059927
f(6) = 0.0299912

The amount that each mod gives. First gets 100% of its effect, second gets 87%, etc...

Shield/armor hardeners have the added feature that the percentage they give is taken away from the damage you would have taken without the hardener. I.e. adding a 50% hardener to a 60% base resistance reduces the 40% remaining damage by 50%, so you only take 20% damage. I.e. it buffs that resistance up to 80%.
