So I was pretty bored today and I added up all the skill points wasted as CCP changed the current flavor of the month for ships, weapons, etc. Currently I am sitting at 63,184,559 skill points.

The breakdown (I started from the bottom and worked up):

Spaceship command: 6,615,623 wasted out of 20,980,765
Missile: 1,144,000 wasted out of 6,967,618
Gunnery: 1,785,068 wasted out of 10,119,569
Engineering: 1,213,439 wasted out of 2,983,134
Electronics: 199,765 wasted out of 4,174,443.

Grand Total: 10,957,895 points wasted.

I'd be curious to know how many others compare to that. Oh, and anyone else have a skill that has more points in it than the maximum allowed?

Skill points are never wasted. If you hadn't trained those skills when they were FoTM, do you think you'd be where you are now?

Yes, because some skills I trained, used for maybe an hour and then never used it again because I either didn't like the module or the ship.

So speaks the 1 year old character. One of the many flaws in EVE is being unable to try it like on the test server.

Dating back to a time when specialization was not an option, there must be many others who have similar dead end skills.

wasted as CCP changed .. because I either didn't like
So which one you are asking for? Wasted because of changes, or wasted because your taste/plans changed? Would think those yield totally different results.

Lets see:
Corporation - 100% in use (Anchoring)
Drones - 100% Gallente use
Electronics - 99% in use (although some only occasionally)
Engineering - 100% in use
Gunnery - 99% in use (no use for small laser/projectile lv1)
Industry - 0% in use (but all used on some point)
Leadership - 100% in use (enough to be wing commander)
Learning - 100%
Mechanic - 99% used (most rig lv1 skills useless)
Missiles - 0% (now there are wasted 500k, due my own lack of faith in guns..)
Navigation - 100% used
Science - 98% used (once upon time needed some mining skills too..)
Social - 30% used (gave up missioning long ago)
Spaceship command - 90% used (only 'regret' is training for a HAC..)
Trade - 90% used

In summary, almost all my skills get use within say 1 month period (some 1.9M wasted now perhaps, of which 1.2M or so due HAC step). None of them are obsolote due some CCP changes; always due change in my playstyle or plans.

There is nothing like wasted skills. If you ont need it today, then maybe tomorrow!

Do you think that peoplpe with 60 mill SP are using everything on daily-or-close-to-it basis? I got skills too I have yet to utilize. But I see their useness. And I know I will use em.

Also balancing always take place. So train skills you feel comfortable with, and see a use for, no matter what the flavor of the month tells you. Because at the end of the day, its still a game!

Have fun! And dont think too much about skills! They are important, but only as a tool!

If you feel one of your skills is being wasted, use it! Like before I started PvPing I fancied myself an industialist so I trained for a Mark V. A few months back I saw the skill was going to waste so I fitted out a Mark V for PvP and took it to losec. Killed some ospreys and barges. Better yet some of them attacked first thinking I was after their ore and saved me the sec hit (since I'm not a _real_ pirate.) YARRRR!!

* My very first character; stopped playing because my ore thieving got me war decked and camped in a station - 100% wasted.

My second/main character;
* Corporation Management 3p (just bought/learned 2 books, 1+2p)
* Electronics 45p (6% done Target Painters 1, he's Amarr)
* Engineering - some points trained in skills just so I can use/train certain ships/modules, but I never use the skill in itself. :(
* Industry 750p (Industry/Refining/Mining 1)
* Leadership 529.543p (Leadership 5, Warfare Link Specialist 4, Wing Command 1 and five Warfare-books with a total of 13p on them) - just to be able to drive Command Ships
* Science 48.177p - to be able to use implants and to use salvager as well as tractor beam.. which I basicly never use on him, rather on Anehra. He PvP's.
* Social 33.919p - no missionrunner.
* Spaceship Command 2.048.000p - Amarr BS 5, total waste. 2.829p for lv2 Destroyers, wasted. Covert Ops (trained before Recons existed), wasted when Recons came, 181.020p.

Nothing wasted on Anehra yet, she's still too young and I'm just training stuff she really need. It'll probably be a couple of months more before she start wasting points on stuff she never will use, just to get access to other things she will use..

I'm a Domi pilot... I trained t2 heavies missles, t2 passive shield stuff and Caldari ship skills ONLY for the Drake. I never would have touched that stuff otherwise. I'm sure it'll come in handy *sometime* in the future, though I'm not sure when. There went 2 months and a bunch of isk ( I bought before invention brought the prices down-oops) I should have used for getting a Thanatos instead....

The morale? just do what you want and ignore the FOTM... it'll just get nerfed.

4.6m/42.9m (10.7%; roughly 3 months training time) wasted because I hardly ever/never use the modules/ships anymore.

I regret not specialising and training learning skills at the start with my main, but that is not to say that any SP are wasted as I do fly the ships I trained for

I got it far worse if i hopped on a mothership,since i'm just a little over 2 months away from the 70 million sp mark,and way more than half that total would be trashed,since you can't dock a mothership anywhere,wich means living in it 23/7.

Id say the only true skillpoint wastage is wanting to climb into a BS asap and not even bothering with training any of those learning skills. I have 3 chars the last 1 i started 3.5 months ago and the first thing she did was get 7 of the 11 learning skills to lvl 5 and the other 4 to lvl 4. It took me exactly 3 months to aquire that as it cost me 3.5M skillpoints apart from getting cybernetics to 4 so that i could use the +4 implants.

Now that she is 3.5 months old she can hardly fly a caracal let alone anything bigger but at least i can train the spaceship command, gunnery and missile skills at 2310 skillpoints the hour. Im averaging an allover hourly skillpoint ratio of more than 2100. Bottomline is that she will have caught up with those "hurry up wanna climb into a Raven" mission runners within about 9 months, and will be close to 20M skillpoints at her first birthday.

I worked out that she will overtake my 2.5 year char within about 2 years. Therefore i suggest never underestimate the power of the learning skills. OK she is my third char, so i planned the primary attribute settings very carefully and also made sure that i chose a race that i would profit most from.

My main char has about 5M SP that i wouldnt say are wasted but that i hardly ever use. Cyno theory is an example of such, its a skill used perhaps 1x a month but then the corp is allways glad that there is someone around that can open them a cyno field.
