I'm sure this has been asked before but I'm afraid I can't find it. Can anyone tell me whether exploration sites appear/disappear at downtime, or is it at random times?

Also, when soneone finds a site, does it then disappear if they kill everything there and loot the site?

It really is hard, I know, but try not to be a ******.

OP, the sites generally disappear once a certain condition has been met. In the case of Radar//Magnetometric sites, opening one of the cans is generally the trigger. Leaving and coming back after that condition is met, the site will be gone (so complete it while you're there ;)

In terms of actual expiration, I've had a couple of Angel Fortresses scanned down but not touched for weeks and they're still available.

Thanks - that's what I thought, as I went off to fit a salvager and the blasted thing had vanished. But presumably it does mean when you find a site, there's not much chance it's already been found and made worthless (in the case of a hacking site at least).

Which is nice.

I scanned down a site that had some nice Hemorphite ore in it. I thought it was a Gravimetric site but there were rats there. So I leave, run 7j to get my combat ship and clear them out. I dock in system, grab my barge to go mine and find the whole place despawned. ****ed me off to no end. No idea what condition I met beyond killing everything there but gone just the same.

Hacking and Archaeology sites generally expire when two conditions are met, namely A: you have triggered the end of site trigger (hacked the first can or aggroed the first NPC, for example) AND all players (cloaked or otherwise) leave the site.

Mining sites (gravimetric) SUPPOSED to expire when either A: all roids are poped or B: no one entered the site for 48 consecutive hours. However this seem to be bugged and I have seen one of these persist for over a month (bug reported it of course).

But do they instantly respawn or do they only spawn at DT?

I'm 99% sure that DT has nothing to do with it. I think once a site is finished and despawns, another one is generated somewhere right then. The somewhere is random. This is why you can go 5 jumps without seeing one and then find 3 in the sixth system. You could then clear out those 3 sites and then not see one in that particular system for days. Random.

I'm pretty sure that I have witnessed sites added to a system while I was playing. For instance, entered system and found a grav and radar site. Have trouble finding radar site, multispectral again to be sure, and now there's a grav, radar, and mag.

Different sites disapear for different reasons. Grav sites despawn if all the roids are mined out. Radar and mag sites seem to despawn once one or some of their cans are looted, so be careful with those, it's all or none in my book. Unknown sites despawn once the escalation mechanism is tripped, whether it escalates or not.
