Over on the drawingboard, it has a vague idea for what sounds like a very small POS tower for player housing. I thought about it, and came up with a slightly more indepth idea that would hopefully reduce the amount of spammed "home" towers around in Empire.

First, there needs to be a very cheap player home in the game, and I propose that instead of it's own station or tower, to put it INSIDE stations as rentable apartments & condos. Tying this into the walking-in-stations feature would work nicely I think. A limit of apartments & condos per station is a given.

An apartment is a 1 or 2 room place for a player to decorate, and socialize as they like, in private or with others. A condo would be a much larger "home" with some additional features, like maybe a small planning thing like the corporation planning room that CCP is talking about for walking-in-stations in general. The rent would scale much like corporate offices do now, and an individual pilot could only have 1...anywhere in the galaxy.

Next, player home stations would be small things. I don't see them being able to dock more than a shuttle or a frigate at best due to the docking port size. Perhaps they could get dock size extenders to accomodate more ships, but the idea is to prevent them from being cheap ways to deploy predesigned fleets for 0.0 warfare. These would require miniscule amounts of fuel to operate and would have a shield like the POSs do and have a reenforced mode, but be limited to small weapon defenses due to CPU and PG size. IMO, a small (5-10) BShip fleet aught to be able to kill one of these. A cloaking device module should be availible, but the use of it should greatly increase fuel consumtion and costs, in return for completely hiding the tower, it's attached modules and any ships within the cloaking field. Of course, if locked already, the cloak does no good. Basically, everything in EVE should be shootable YARRRR!! but there needs to be a measure of protection that makes it worthwhile deploying things.

Inside the player home stations, they would be large and opulent, the heigth of personal luxury in EVE. Limits of course on ship and hangar m3 much like a POS corp hangar array and ship maint array is now to prevent abuse as a cheap, disposable, tactical station. The player that owns the station would have a complete walking-in-station set of features to pick from, allowing them to choose what "options" they want when they online it, and having a limited number of options they can have. Being able to rent player apartments and/or condos would be the main source of income for the place. There would be no refinery, no...well, anything, except for ship fitting for station services.

Of course the standard options we've had since conquerable stations should be there, such as allowing access by standing and the newer POS Shield password feature.

Ideas? Thoughts? Discuss! Very Happy

Ah, forgot to add...player home towers should require an expensive charter for in empire systems and have a limit of how many can be built, but NOT be allowed to be built at moons. Leave moon anchor points for people who need it for the real POSs. Instead, allow them to be anchored anywhere much like secure cans.

There are a number of things I thought about but left unsaid as they generally are common sense, such as not allowing the anchoring of towers near roids or limiting guns in high-sec to only fire on war targets.

Player housing would be cool. It's not a new idea by any means, but one definitely worth pursuing.

I'm fine with it as long as exotic dancers are placeable and have some level of interactability.

To make it fit into the theme of Eve, I would argue that it should be an extension of corporate offices. If there is a corporate office in a station, then members can rent out personal space. Similarly with a POS, but make it a separate anchorable unit with a limited number (say 20) personal units inside.

I would argue vociferously against it being a separate mini POS kind of thing. For one thing, I could sit there and camp your home. Who will defend you, particularly if there's a wardec?

And the use of a personal space like this would be... Can't think of a damn reason to have this ingame. You already have hangars and the like in every station.

If that was aimed at me... my point was that I would like to see it made available only to player-run corps by placing it within player run corp environments, rather than making them personal property.

I'm a supporter of this idea.

I've played MMOs for a loooong time now and one of the features I always enjoyed about a few select ones were the player housing options. UO and SWG come to mind. You could collect shiney pretty things and place them in a space that was truely yours. A trophy room, a bunker, a magic area, whatever.

Does this "belong" in EVE? Yes and no, it depends on your perspective. EVE already covers a great deal of what players want in a science fiction game however in order to make EVE truely immersive you must open up other facets of the game for more social minded players.

A Corp wide meeting sitting in a chat window blows. A Corp wide meeting sitting in the offices of your own Corporation looking at expressions rocks. Meeting up with that super hot girl (played by a guy no doubt) and then inviting her back to your private pad to discuss your Quafe collection (shrugs) the sky is the limit here folks. Whether you want to admit it or not its a definate addition to the game and would probably bring in new subscriptions because of the options it opens up to social minded players.

BUT, before they do this I want a new datadump of the existing database already :P

This idea sound more like it should be in the features and Idea section (I beleive the sticky has a link to other idea's for player housing).

Its a new twist to the idea of housing for players, most have been suggesting bases in astriod belts or deadspace housing.

the idea of a "private POS" for individual players would probably be the closest thing to player housing we could get. some special apartment in a station would really only apply to the "walking-in-stations" feature, and have little use other than for playing "sims in space" Smile

i think such a "private POS" should be much like the OP describes. but to truly add that kind of feature, and have people actually use it instead of just getting a regular POS, it should be MUCH more affordable - and obviously less powerful. for example, it should be something a 6 month old player living only in high-sec running missions should be able to get.

i agree that it should be able to anchor anywhere (away from other objects), and in empire require standings (only between individual player & empire) to anchor. but if a player can only have ONE, they should also be able to un-anchor and relocate it fairly easily. it could even work like a really limited (and somewhat large) ship, that when anchored turns into a fixed object.

of course, it should still have more features than just a room to walk around in or a single hauler's worth of cargo space to stash goodies in. what would be the point of keeping it "online" if it were nothing more than a glorified secure can? Razz perhaps it could have a micro lab with only 1 multi-purpose research slot? i think that alone would make these very popular Cool

i agree that cloaking should guzzle fuel. but due to scan probes, they will need a better ability to hide if they are easily popped by a few battleships. perhaps it could use a noise generator addon that makes it harder to find with probes? these really should be treated more like capital ships than a POS -since they are only the property of a single player instead of a whole corp or alliance... although even carriers have corp-divisions in them.

when unanchored, it would be able to move around about like a freighter (very slowly). likewise, it would have zero module slots, and be unable to interact with floating cargo. but it would be able to store a few of its structures when its "packed up" like this. since its basically a goofy freighter, and meant to be viable in hi-sec, it should also be able to dock in a station and use stargates. but where available, it should also be able to use cyno fields to jump. perhaps the jump-drive could be some kind of addon, so that capital ship skills are not part of the base requirements.

maybe the part that turns into a ship would be some kind of addon in itself... without it they would have to relocate it the hard way using a hauler. it could be some kind of ship that you "install" the structures onto - replacing the control tower.

basically, i think it should be viable for all kinds of players to use, and in different circumstances. the high-skilled players should be able to take advantage of advanced features; but the basic options should still be available to lesser-skilled players.

/signed on the rentable apartments/condos in stations! Very Happy

Not so sure about the whole housing-out-in-the-open concept. Apart from everything else, it runs the risk of introducing more lag. Then there is the thing that the more people get these deployable houses and start spending some/most of their time in them, the less people will actually stay in stations. These will be already fairly deserted (not talking about NPC filler here) when walking in stations is introduced - there is no need to make them even more deserted.

If those potential problems can be fixed/circumvented, then I'm all for introducing those deployable asteroids, if that'll make at least some players happy. Smile

Some good ideas, but some missed a few points.

1. NPC station apartments/condos AND the deployable microstation ideas go hand in hand. The Microstations are supposed to be like T2 player housing.
2. The microstation (a more clear term for the housing POS) is just that, a tiny station with virtually no services, just space to get out of your ship and walk around with upgrades you can buy for it to rent more apartment/condo space to other pilots. It is NOT a POS, despite having POS shields and a reenforced mode and be able to use POS modules.
3. The cloaking I had in mind would make the thing untargetable and invisible, like the shipboard cloaking devices, not like the stealth array that we have availible for current POS. The device would also be an upgrade for the microstation, and not a module.

Yes, it's "the sims" (The Sims Online sucks BTW...wife tried it.) but don't blame my idea, blame CCP's walking-in-stations featuer that is no concern of mine except that I dovetailed some of my idea into it to make the feature more interesting.

Player housing has ALWAYS been more of a social and roleplaying feature than a functional one, just as much as the walking-in-stations that CCP is wholeheartedly developing.

Go find and play Face of Mankind...

Its kinda like what walking in stations should, imo, be like.

Another semi decent idea is that from City of Villains... your super group (guild) can create a base and portal into it... you can then spend honour or some such thing (its pretty much like XP but for the whole guild.. so... like an XP tax) to expand it and then spend hours loving redecorating and designing your base. There are useable things like the telepad, med bay, various storage and crafting stations, power/control stuff... its not bad but im sure CCP could pull out a much better version.

People moan that this will kill eve... its dying already.
It needs new stuff to breathe more life into it.

So have npc stations rent homes out... have corp offices actually be offices (cost/coolness ratio.. you dont wanna hold meetings in some minmitar craphole) that you can visit and set up to your liking.

And if you own your own station/outpost then you can deck out its insides however you see fit... saving presets would be handy as station ping pong would leave a lot of stations set to default methinks...

But yes Tic, i'd like to see something like this in eve. If only to give us something to do other than spin ships when bored!

My earlier reaction aside i think there is merit in customisable housing/offices.

I'd like a personal science lab, that can be "fitted" with data interfaces, or other items that influence the cost/speed of your labwork. Same for factories: what about an item fitted in there that will speed up production by 5%? Maybe even a 0.1% chance per job of producing a "named" item (+1 metalevel)?

One of the coolest things about eve is the ability to "pimp my ride". Why just pimp ships, why not also pimp labs? This way us science nerds can have that fun part of eve as well...

Fix all the POS bugs.
Increase the number of 'office' slots in stations.

Then worry about this sort of thing...
