Your school's not gunna like your bandwidth usage.
For those of us with older computers, there's a H.264 decoder called CoreAVC that's fast and quality. The pro version uses both the CPU and graphics card to spit out the video. On a AMD Barton 2500+ I can play 1080p H.264's just fine. I say my shortlist of material worth the HD (and money) is Matrix 1, Pulp Fiction, GITS2, Karas and Casshern. Of course the latter two aren't out yet, but I'll be getting them when they are.
Smoke looks good, skin is riddled with textures. The video is sharp. 1080p is the future. Buy a $2000 tv today!
HD movies are nearly at the limits of 35mm film. You will be seeing grain

They have a nearly-unused dedicated DS3. They don't care unless I spam their logs, which is why they made me move my sigs Originally by: Vari

CoreAVC is great, and is in my upcoming Video Decoding guide, but it does not use the GPU. That is an upcoming feature which is planned, but does not even have a date yet. It gets its performance by sacrificing accuracy; it is not output-equivalent to the reference decoder, and so is not technically a valid H.264 decoder, but it is very good nonetheless. I cannot watch the video I mentioned in the original post without CoreAVC. Originally by: Vari

In my experience most of the grain is from the crappy encoding. Apparently all the new Blu-Ray discs are using MPEG-2 video encoding to start, even though the standard supports VC-1 (WMV9) and H.264. I heard its because Sony hasn't provided them with anything else yet. MPEG-2 is a very noisy codec, which is responsible for that. |

Its also not directly encoded from the Blu-Ray disc, so there's a bit of transcoding lossiness. And as I said before, they're using MPEG-2 on the discs (extraordinarily stupid) so its not as good as it could be. To really enjoy it at full quality you have to have at least a 1900 or so horizontal resolution on your screen |

yah it looked amazing to me.....You can cheat and play this at a slower speed, you will only notice the sound slow down, not the video... Seriously, I wish I was my own grandchild that way i could live to CRAP my pants at what we can expect in the next 50 yrs and not yawn while remenising about how Back To The Future was THE BESTEST movie ever... |

In short, the 35mm gives a lot of detail that DVDs cannot capture. You miss emotional nuances, tons and tons of detail in the movie set (you can clearly see a styrofoam texture on 'marble' in the lobby scene of Matrix 1) and many things that movie directors put in their movies for the big-screen format. Not all movies benefit from the HD formats, but some definitely do. It's like spending a day with your glasses off. Originally by: SI RedLeg What is the movie? It's Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. The backdrops in that movie are amazing. |

That's normal. Its only WMV9. If I copied the H.264 stream from the original transcoded video, it would not play it fine . I can play it fine but at about 65-80% CPU usage on a Core 2 Duo 2Ghz, using the latest version of CoreAVC. I'm encoding a separate H.264 clip overnight; I'll post it when I wake up. It probably won't run fine on your computer |

H.264 encode of a relatively low-motion scene, similar length, same film. Note that there is a good deal of blocking due to the original encoding, which didn't seem to give enough bits to this scene (which probably requires at least 5-6Mbits to look good). |

Probably the best film to show in HD looks stunning enough on normal DVD. If GITS is coming out on blue ray only seems im gonna have to get a PS3 |

what film is that it looks awsome!
Its Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. Half anime, half CGI, 100% awesome. Though the storyline is a lot more confusing and crappier than all the other Ghost in the Shell films and TV series. |

I find HD massively overrated, tbh.
Sure, it looks slightly sharper/clearer. But not it's not worth the premium over DVDs, IMO. |

Any player works. Download the CCCP, then open the video and double click the FFDShow Video settings icon in the system tray. Turn off the H.264 decoding in the Codecs (from Libavcodec to Disabled). Then CoreAVC should work automatically when you restart the media player. |
