I work with stuff like this every day I understand the difficulties in doing this but at the end of the day it is about what's best for your customers, and having them wondering is clearly not best.
I agree with this statement so deeply and completely that I'm thinking about using it as the basis for a new religion! When we don't know what's going on with the bugs we report it leaves us feeling neglected and ignored. Confused Surely something as simple as a response saying "Fixed", "Not a bug", "Thanks it's being looked at" etc. is not "taking to much time" especially when as they say every bug report is investigated. At the very least it would prevent duplicate reports which wastes more time than clicking a button and typing one short canned sentence and then clicking another button. You could even make it a one-click thing so the dev that looks at the report can just click and go. Technology is a wonderful thing.

A good decision by CCP. They had no place in EVE from the start, they should have melted a month after last Christmas in my opinion.

But people have KEPT these, not just through neglect, deliberately kept and collected these items.

These people are stupid.

The addition of a line AFTER rendering the snowballs useless was awful practice, if you'd given us ample warning no-one would've complained.
Add to that an INSULTING description change, and you're really testing my patient with this game.

Why would they have even contemplated the thought of needing to give warning, they're bloody snowballs, freebies that were given out. It's not the devs fault if stupid people decided to pay for them. To coin a phrase, I created you...

Putting aside that I disagree with you about removing them at all, releasing them and telling us they will poof in a month would have been fine.

Releasing them and at some point saying "these are going to poof in the next patch in a week or two" also would have been fine.

Making something people bought, sold, collected, and used worthless overnight without notice = not fine.

A bad decision, poorly implemented, and ineptly communicated.

I agree; there isn't any reason they couldn't have given a heads-up.

I know it isn't a big deal.

But still...

Who are you to say what I can and can't enjoy? It is excellent game design (especially in RPG's) when you let a player make trivial changes to the world just because they can. Like, say, naming your ship. Or collecting corpses. Or earning killmails. None of those are necessary, but people enjoy them and things like that help keep people in the game.

Can you understand why some people would feel a little miffed?

Let me get this straight... a item that was something funny for the holidays over a year ago... is now made useless... ehm... they had a use to begin with????

They where fun, free, and if peeps paid for em... good on the seller... having people pay for stuff you get for free is always fun... but geez... it was a fun present for the holidays... not a bloody new feature...

I anxiously be awaiting your decision to remove the ability to rename cans things like "FREE STARTER GEAR" in Empire to protect stupid people as well. Don't forget to take away the ability to remove stuff from other people's cans in belts so there is no more "can flipping" to get people agro'd to ore theives.. Rolling Eyes

*Phichi hands Snarls McGee a valium, and a tissue. I'd rather have new kali fixes and features than a new "gift". And I would rather the support staff spend their time answering petitions that pertain to more important matters than some asshat that is baiting noobs in jita. Take your self righteous bull**** elsewhere.

Who really needs the valium? I'm calm enough that I don't have to resort to childish insults and crass languange.

What little else is left of your 'argument' would only be valid if the people who were answering petitions (GMs) were the same people as those making this change (devs). I'm not the one who came up with the reason/excuse of "to protect the stupid people"--that was an CCP official employee. If protecting stupid people from themselves is so important then I'm sure we'll see the other changes I, and others, have mentioned.

Do not try to make grandiose assumptions: I am neither upset nor 'crying' about the "great snowball nerf of '07".. I just think it was a sh**ty reason we were given and at least *SOME* warning would have been nice to have. It would have given my corp an excuse to have some pointless fun in one last huge snowball fight. This is a game, right? Fun is allowed, isn't it?

It reminds me of the "Great Melon Nerf" in SWG: a pointless decision made irrelevant by leaving all the other similar issues in the game based on the official reasoning.

My nasal cavity is on fire (from shooting hot coffee out of it) laughing at all the people getting all Emo over a damned snowball. I wonder how many of the people crying because their snowballs melted would be the first in line to file a petition if they got baited and ganked with the snowballs? Laughing

The excuse that they were being used to get someone concorded is nonsense. That is just "another game mechanic". Is CCP going to remove every way you can trick someone into getting killed? Hardly!

Bring back the snowballs! Or compensate us for the ones you stole from us!

Gadgette

No, it's not nonsense. This item made people who attacked others using snowballs have red flashing brackets, tell me what other item in game does this without you being concorded in empire space.
BS, and I don't mean Battleship. I've never had anyone appear flasy Red to me after they fired snowballs at me. I've also never had anyone tell me the reverse.

I also have bought many snowballs and had a stockpile of hundreds of millions of ISK worth of them. When can I expect to see my ISK returned to me? I don't care if they were not "a part of the original plan for eve", they were a part of the game for over a year and we could buy and sell them. To remove them without notice or compensation is just plain wrong.

Also, BTW... I've seen many player 'lure' other players by leaving jet cans out. When can we expect jet cans to be removed from game because I know they cause 100 times more trouble then snowballs ever did!

Yea the red brackets were removed when the first revelations patch came. Did see that fix coming, so this removal doesn't make sense since they had been fixed, unless there was some bug with the fix i guess, for me the always just showed the yellow lock bracket after revelations
And it realy doesn't make alot of sense that Santa's were flying around just over a month ago handing more out

No, i cannot comment on the steps taken by game design. Only a member of that team can.

As for the no feedback of bug reports, it would take too much time to reply to all the bug reports so we generally don't do this. I can assure you that every single bug report IS read and action is taken on every bug report.

Not trying to flame here but if everyone is acted upon why are there bugs from over 1.5 years ago still ingame?.. Your words say one thing, from a player view your actions to these bug reports are open->Read->Drag and drop on recycle bin.

You may add new things, give more server power, Give us X ammout of new mods, fancy gang system, EvE TV ectect, but in 1.5 YEARS i've yet to see the drones working even after twice the patch notes have said there fixed!. (there are more bugs drones is just more well known)

I guess your view of things is diffrent from mine.

So, snowballs were removed because they caused too many problems? Nice one CCP. So, next time you have a lack of foresight and give us all a gift that ends up causing YOU (the gift giver) unforeseen problems...you're going to just revoke it?

It's easier to just swing the nerf bat on something the majority of players don't care about than to actually fix the problem. If they simply removed without notice something else "useless" like corpses or killmails the posters here hurling insults at those of us who enjoyed them would be singing quite a different tune. If you enjoyed them, or made your living buying and selling them, that's just to bad.

Fine, I can accept they are gone and will drop my whineage, but it would be nice if we could at least reprocess the launchers and snowballs into minerals or something. Is that possible CCP?

You can reject it as lame all you want, but it's not going to change.

Snowballs were never a part of the original plan for eve, their introduction caused nothing but headaches for the support staff.

So rather than fix what is causing the problem you just remove them all together. That's not very good software practice, what next? Are you going to remove drones because they cause problems rather than fix them?

Snowballs have not been removed. They have been changed. The items still exist...kindof.

I have only been playing for about 2 months so I've never had a snowball launcher or snowballs however I can agree that those that lost them are upset regardless of what they were used for. Things are valuable because people will pay for them. They also were unique which would make things even more valuable for those that still existed.

This wasn't a change this was a complete removal of an item in game, an item that had "value" and a lot of people lost something. Yea, its no big deal like collecting stamps or coins is no big deal but those both have otherwise worthless things being bought and sold for immense amounts of money just like snowballs.

Now CCP giveith and CCP takeith away but they still should have notified everyone that they were going to destroy the snowballs and launchers and why. They could also allow those items to be refined to something, maybe ice products for the snowballs and decent minerals for the launcher, no where near the "market value" but something more than trash.

Well, sure, they're only snowballs, but some of us liked playing with them and so spent money collecting them. I'm sure we won't be getting that money back, since other players have it now.

But, let's be clear on what's happened: you took my stuff, gave me nothing in exchange, and gave no warning that this would happen, all because you messed up back on '05.*

Snowballs were fun, I'll miss them.

So that would explain the POS bugs that have been reported since they were on Sisi Pre going live not being fixed?

Consider yourself told the reverse.

My first introduction to snowballs was someone targetting me, flashing red, and shooting at me. Of course, I figured out that a weapon doing no damage to me was harmless and so didn't fire back.

Still, this removal was poorly handled. Notice would have helped those who had them to either sell them or use them up. As it is now, these items with a real isk value were made valueless overnight. To have people's wealth destroyed to prevent a possible exploit (against the stupid) is a little unfair.

A sad day.

I've shot a LOT of snowballs at strangers and not once did anyone shoot back at me. Instead, they laughed and we chatted in local and I met some cool people and the game was a little more fun and funny.

So while I get that some people were using them to prey on the unwary and I think that in the context of that it made sense to melt them,I really do wish I could have gotten some notice. Would have been a lot of fun to go out and shoot them at people for one final day.

The hit FX was pretty wonderful.

I'm frankly amazed that there are people who still have them. I used all of mine up within half an hour of finding them in my hangar. We had a twenty-man epic snowball battle in Oimmo, it ruled.

These things were designed to be a one-shot, limited use christmas gift for use in empire. I really don't understand why people have been stockpiling them with no intent to use.

If you just lost your launchers and snowballs because you failed to join in the fun, oh well, you missed out. Those of us who used them as the harmless fun they were supposed to be had a blast.

QFT.

Seriously, some people have major issues.

That said though, I'd have expected CCP to have removed them at the end of December or January, rather than letting the things sit around for so long.

Shugo Kazuma

I think it's more of an issue that they were removed without any sort of prior warning. I personally didn't use all of mine, but nor did I invest millions on then.

So while it's no big deal for me personally, I can see why some people would be upset. I imagine that people would be whining on the forums if for example CCP decided to destroy all T2 BPOs and notifed people after the patch that they were doing it. Not that it would be likely to ever happen though.
