What are defects and how are they categorized? How does QA look at defects and deal with them? What is involved in the pre-patch QA process?

Mephysto has authored his first blog of the new year and provides answers to the previous questions and more. Check out his new blog, All you wanted to know about Defects but were afraid to ask. If you are interested in the QA process, you'll be glad you did.

At a guess, they delete mails after reading them when testing and the test plan had no 'recieve new mail, mark it read, restart client' step.

Otherwise, great blog, i love this sort of stuff. My ability to repeat mundane task over and over again, makes me think I should look into a career in QA.

I don't agree with the usability part since it's not something you "fix" during the process, it's what you should build all the other stuff on to. Wasn't a bad blog though.

All aspects of a program are designed, implemented, and then tested and debugged. Usability is not an exception. The idea that design and implementation should suffice to obtain a quality interface is every bit as ludicrous as the idea that freshly-written code should be free of bugs.

Can't you do a mini patch for the mail bug, like tomorow?

For those of us that have joined a new corp in a new alliance since this bug was introduced it is just a terrible bug.

First of all, Thanks for the blog and great info, tbh CCP's greatest fault isnt the many many bugs & performance its simply the lack of communication. (ie Memory leak in the client for 3 months before anyone at ccp offices says in Dev blog, forum post, MOTD, known issues, even says that yea we know its being worked on.) I mean there isnt anyone who has played that doesnt know the loot tables always have and probly always will be screwed, the infamous Miner I and 1mn drops from Battleships have been ongoing since Castor. but its things like new regions that cant substain theirselfs due to roids not respawning, memory leaks, Chimera's Center point & sizing wrong, the current missle bug in which firing at any object that is close to another object causes said missle to fly in a figure eight untill it runs out of fuel and fades to black, insert any bug here______, that go on & on, and you get threads over 20 pages long, just waiting for those little words "Yup we know & are working on it" & if you do send in a bug report there is no way of knowing that it was recived, which i'm betting leads to resending the same bug report a couple hundred times like the petitions causing a major problem of simply sorting thru them all, finding the real issue, and the having to read and delete all the reposts.

I would use this blog to repeat a note about beauty and easy UI:

delete or make optional the bright yellow cloud in some mission/complex

they:

a) are too bright and eye soryng;
b) make hard checking if the module are active (transparent light green on bright yellow is difficult to differentiate from transparent light grey), an pushing F1-F8 in PvE don't guarantee that the modules are working as the target can be dead halfway, or you could have pushed while reloading/cycling ammunitions.

To the guy above me... bug report?

Also increases the guilt for just "putting up with this bug and that bug just because "It's Eve and we all know it has bugs and it will get fixed one day..."Embarassed
I feel slightly guilty about not working harder to find reproduction steps for my bugs that I have gotten around to submitting.
But on the other hand it's nice to know that it isn't just me over looking stuff just because of familiarity.

A good post Mephysto, thanks for the insight. Never been one to cry too much about bugs but will certainatley think more about them in the future and how to play my part in getting them zapped. (not sure I have the time to dedicate to being a BH though Sad)

So New Regions having only unknown (same silly complex everywhere) and gravi signature types is a bug or a feature?

my corp mate made a nice video about it: http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=460654

For example, leading up to the Revelations release, vsync was accidentally switched on, resulting in all framerates being cut. We were aware of this occurring almost immediately, however, finding out where the vsync had been changed took several days to determine simply due to the amount of code that had to be checked through.

This problem - low frame rates - was talked about by the users quite a bit in the forums. I never saw anything stated this clearly (or even close) that indicated you had an idea what was wrong. This is the sort of thing that would be nice to see communicated more - "We know there's a framerate problem, it's related to vsync, we're working on it."

If CCP DID post that somewhere, my apologies, I missed it, and disregard. :)

I simply can not understand how it is possible to talk about UI errors and UI usability and not mention drones. Drones are mentioned only in relation to fighters! I mean, common! A blog about QA and not mentioning the worst implemented and longest suffering feature/weaponsystem of the game? Talk about blindspot ...

Apart from that, nice blog but it kind of describes the QA of any big software product with tight deadlines (apart maybe that normally feedback to the client/users from QA is seen as of prime importance, hint, hint). Now if only the drone issues were bumped up the list ...

Mephysto more features such as voice comms, sexy scenery, or any new content take a backseat to stability. If the engine in my truck only started once every 15 tries and when it started the transmission wouldn't engage, I'm betting you would suggest new tires right?

Voice comms!? Dude the majority play with sound disabled...

I'm not trying to rag on you guys but, why are you adding features to an unstable platform? Why are you even thinking about new features?

We care about stability.
We want stability.
We pay for stability.

The last thing we need is more stuff that doesn't work.
blog that next time.
The game is getting better every week, just keep focusing on stability for awhile and NOTHING ELSE, then we can blog about "sexy scenery".
But you better get it together soon fellas, Pirates of the Burning Sea will be out soon and your tit just may go dry.

A UI usability issue I'm still complaining about when I'm playing EVE is the right click menus. They are sometimes really stupidly organized. Take for example the right click menu that comes up when you right click a Giant Sec Can in a hangar. From the top: Show Info, Trash It,Reprocess, Set new Password, Set name, Sell this item, Create contract, Buy this type, Add to market quick bar, View market details, Open Container.... and so on.

So at position 11 from the top you will find the most used function of a giant sec can namely "Open container". In my opinion It should be at the very top or at least as number two in the list as "Show info" probably always should be on top. Also the dangerous "Trash it" and "Reprocess" selections should be at the very bottom.

I got more examples of badly organized right click menus if anyone is interested.

Seconded, The trash it is always to close to show info on virtually all items in the hangar.

When talking about UI "defects", what about performance concerns? I believe it's a well-known fact that simply hiding the interface will double or triple ones framerate, which is a much much greater impact that reducing all graphics settings from maximum to minimum.

This performance issue not only throws a disproportionate amount of CPU power down the drain for a game which had its engine developed seven years ago - it also leads to 'interface lag' in certain situations of the game. Take for example a large number of ships on the overview. If one warps out, you can sometimes actually feel the game briefly hanging while the overview updates itself with the newly ordered list of ships present. And if you have not one ship warping out, but several dozens of ships continually warping in and out or getting destroyed - like in a fleet battle - the game slows to a crawl. Sometimes to the point where you can click on one item in the overview, and after 5 seconds the click actually selects something, but a wholly different ship because the overview list has reorganized itself several times over that period of time. Not because the server lags, not because the game engine is inefficiently eating too much CPU or graphics power, not because there are too many objects onscreen... but rather because the interface lags. Try switching off the interface in such an ultra-slow fleet battle once, you'll see.
