I'm ****ed about this too. I wouldn't mind if the pics were updated monthly, but I've played for almost 2/3rds of the year and i'm still an !

If it's not fixed by the christmas holidays, I'll most likely get fired.

We've put our efforts in getting this to be the next task on my list and we're geared towards getting this up and running asap.

I think that makes this issue quite clear. Smile

Don't you think its ridiculous how long it takes to update these pictures? Its just a ****ing picture and its not done yet! WTF.

Are you really trolling, or just not reading?

They needed new hardware. Hardware was manufactured for them. Hardware was delivered. Hardware was set up. Hardware will soon be doing it's thing.

Unless you know how to magically speed up any of these steps (being the IT genious I'm sure you are) then please go and dig yourself a hole to live in.

Wait a second, I don't quite follow.
The only way you'd have to render 600k portraits is if you generate all possible portraits regardless of subscription status and/or character active/deleted flags (if they exist somewhere in the first place).

So you have 150k active subscriber accounts, max 3 characters per account (more like 1.5 on average, but I digress), so maybe 200k portraits that SHOULD be rendered. In TOTAL. Including the ones already rendered. So more like 100k or less portraits that need rendering.

Furthermore, what if you started with portraits that HAVE at least 1 post in the forums first ("!" only first), THEN work your way through the active subscribers without rendered faces, THEN leave the machine running on all the rest.

And why not, make a small check on each post in forum... check for portrait availability (or last update, if older than 1 month) = generate it (again).
I mean, nobody cares if somebody that does NOT post in the forum DOESN'T have the portrait generated... now does it ?

Heck, even more fun: link the generating machine to the image-serving machines. When ANY of those serving machines detect a image timestamp older than 1 month upon image request, they automatically submit a "generation request" to the other machine.

or rather than spending four days coding that into the system, just spend three and a half days doing it the other way.

I don't know I think you could wait a week, hell there are good odds for you that it'll be less than a week, for the program to do it's thing rather than risk uncessary complications.

Am I the only one to be worried by t20's maths? Shouldn't that be 165,600 portraits per day since there's 82800 seconds in 23 hours! :p

While I think it's silly and it should indeed be fixed, I don't understand why people are making such a big deal out of it, it isn't the end of the world tbh.

Once upon a time it was the easiest way to identify alt posters, now you can't judge by the portrait like you used to.

It took easily 2 monthes before everyone on the forum stopped automatically assuming you were an alt just because you had Exclamation for a portrait. And it still happens, though now at least people look you up ingame before saying it.

The picture archive i guess are not sorted into "active" or "inactive" accounts. They just being accounts. And as such they are handled together. That means of cource accounts from the day 0 are treated the same was as character started today.

It's silly that this becomes such an issue. Not that it's a silly issue - just that it was silly for it to be let go as long as it has before getting looked at.

It's embarrassing. Yes, yes. I love EVE, but it's still embarrassing for CCP to have let this get so out of hand.

Anyway, there are technologies out there that may help, since from what I understand it's a render issue. Perhaps one of the available rendering farms can help. It's not like this is a unique problem for some kinds of businesses.
