I fail to see why would anyone pay extra for this? Windows Communication Foundation together with the new audio apis makes it trivial to build reliable and lagfree voice or video streaming functionality to any app through the peer 2 peer apis. Since you're already paying MS to get the DirectX 10 support, might as well use the other platform features.

PS. It seems this built-in voice feature is why EVE crashes on Vista. Pretty incomprehensible it wasn't tested on even though it's already RTM. Rolling Eyes

I love the security this in game comms provides.

That alone is the selling point for me. I hope my corp and Alliance pick this up for some of these reasons.

I hate having 15 in TS channel and only 10 in gang.
I hate noobs logging in and asking noob questions while a fleet op is happening.
I hate people talking about non gate camp issues in the TS channel.
I want the ability to block TS members when on a op.

I have heard this could also be our VOIP service outside of EVE. I like that idea alot. You can now be connected 24/7. I hope they give us voicemail and lots of calling features.

I will pay for this service.

We need to have comms so we can interact with AOL and MSN and Googletalk. That alone right there would be awesome.

Yes, you may be happy paying extra for this, but i sure as hell wont be. You can get the EXACT same through a ventrillo or Teamspeak sever totaly free. (IIrc eve has 70,000 subscribers using TQ. I find it hard to see how 1 million dollars a month cannot pay for the server upkeep and other expenses)

And the wages of all the employees...

But again... the money wouldn't be going to CCP anyways as the service will be provided by VIVOX...

/me shrugs... I'd really like to come back to the subscription stuff after Fanfest. I'm sure we'll learn a bit more about this during Fanfest probably during EVE-TV on Sat.

Well in that case could they not make it an optional upgrade to the client? or get people to purchace a seperate sub to the VIVOX system?

Yes that's what it would be. It would be an optional additional subscription. However the client will remain the same for people using and not using voice.

Sadly I didn't want to comment on this post because I have not educated myself in info on vista/DX10 due to lack of interest and too many rumors. Therefore I couldn't possibly intelligent answer to the top part of the post.

But as far as the P.S. goes... Kali is currently in testing. I'm sure when kali comes out it will run nicely on all released and supported OSs. Wink

Ah well at least it is optional. Only time will tell how sucsessful this is (considering you can get it free anyway)

Misunderstanding, what I meant was that it would seem the 3rd party company that built the core of this voice functionality might have not tested on Vista. Most often when third party libraries and components are used they tend to be a headache in the long haul when you need to deal with those companies with regards to security and compatibility issues.

Linkified the big URL ;) - Cyrano

I'd recommend checking the session Games as Malware: Why Security is Your Problem Too from this track. I think it may very well concern this type of 3rd party voice support that's not done in the more safer interpreted Python.

Anyone who attended the lecture on Vivox voice chat can you please give me the highlights. Or are there any vids of this lecture that I can watch myself?

I have not seen the video of the lecture but I have been told a few of the key pointers of the lecture.

Apparently the demo for it didn't work at all, and the speaker gave up on it, so no one got a good view of what it's like. (I almost want to say that this was probably from the bug where you have to restart the client before you can successfully join a voice channel)

The price of the service WAS answered like I had hoped during the lecture. The cost will be $10 a year.

$10 a year isn't bad at all if you ask me. And is less then the guesstimated amount of $1 a month.

Nate, can you clarify a couple of things for me (if possible)

1) Was any mention made of a "corp" subscription? Where the corp pay for all their users?

2) Can 1 Vivox sub be used across multiple ACCOUNTS? As in, I have 3 accounts. Do I pay once or three times?

1. As I was not at Fanfest (I wish) I do not know every detail like I would like to. I will contact some people who were there for that lecture and ask this question. You can probably expect an answer later today (Nov 13th eve time). *edit* but I doubt it... in theory you could always buy like 10 voice accounts and hand them out to your friends but is there a line in the vivox EULA against account sharing?

/ignorant comment
I'm sure it wouldn't be hard for Vivox to implement some sort of Voice account management system for people who want to buy accounts for others.
/end ignorant comment.

2. Yes a voice account can be used on any char and account. But you can only be signed into that voice account on 1 client at a time.

How does the voice client interact with the new fleet structure ?

Do the command channels get set up automatically as you form the fleet ?

Yes every gang channel is made and joined automatically.

When you form a gang you get gang channel.
When you form a squad you get squad channel.
When you form a wing you get wing channel.
When you form a fleet you get fleet channel.

According to Naphtalia of EMFI has said that this was discussed at fanfest... it is not on the drawing board but the community wants it and Vivox said that it's a good idea. But they also said that they would leave it upto CCP to make any deals or proposals like that.

We'll see,

What about corp channel ?

What I've read says that its only for player created/gang channels. Having to create a channel every day just to get corp chat could be a pain.

I'm guessing your not one of the people to know the benefits of using "voice" over "typing".

I hate it when numbtards DONT use TS/Vent its so slow at coordinating anything. For something that takes you 30 seconds to type, could take 5 seconds over voice and you dont have to stop fighting to do so.

I am a demander when it comes to fighting ops, mining ops are not so needy.

im worried why do have to pay even more the for the chat when we can get it free from things such as TS and vent - how come games like BF2 can provide a chat free of charge while a game we have to pay for cant porovide it for free? is it really tht hard?

Maybe I missed the answer to this question:

What happens if the client crashes? I assume that the voice channel closes as well?
