Why not paint player's corp's flag on their ship, I am sure it will be really cool. What do you guys think??

Better options is ...that you can see in game your signature radius..... like corp flag in aplha :)

Imagine BIG ships coming and impress you with HUGE copr halo around it.... or smal fighters that use MVD BLINK in the sky to show you pirate flag :)

Have nice day

that would require making in every client a corps flags database, so each flag doesnt have to be imported form the server (causing even more lag).

But the idea itself is nice :)

You don't need to have a local database, if you created a corp before, you would understand how corp flag works. Basicly, a corp flag has a few layers (5? I cannot remember), each layer, you can choose one of a few pre-defined pictures, which is already on everyone's hard drive. When you view the corp flag, the server doesn't send you the actural picture but just sends an array with 5 (I assume there are only 5 layers) numbers, the number indecates the which picture for that layer, the client then combine these pictures and display it on the screen.

e.g. server sends 4,5,1,3,6 which means the first layer use the 4th picture, the second layer use the 5th picture, etc.

The only technical problem that I can see is to draw the flag on ship's original texture, an patch is needed to tell client where it should draw the flag on.

It has 3 layers actually. Im well aware of that. If u wan to have corp flags painted on your ships the server would have to send u 6 additional informations when loading ships in vincinity around u. That is lower symbol, lower symbol color, and the same for medium and high layer.

That just wont work dude. Maby its not much information for u but hey - there are often 27k of players online - let each of him need 1 info of another ship around him per minute (sometimes when ure for ex. in jita this number grows up, sometimes in 0.0 its 0 for a while).

Lets say info for symbols comes in numbers: from 0 to 255 - server has to send 6 such numbers. Additionaly for each ship ure encountering. U know that sometimes when u warp into a crowded station system is lagging until gathering all information - well this lag will be even bigger.

While it not quite comfortable playing eve now i dont think its a good idea.

Well there is the solution, you (the EVE client) only request a person's flag when your camara is focused on his /her ship or when his/her ship is close enough to your ship (in sight of your camara, basicly), as you are doing in exactly the same way that you request his/her info. Because if you cann't see their ship, what's the point of requesting their corp/ship flag?

I personally would like some customization added.

t'is a nice idea, but tbh its not worth giving up server performance in favour of a minor aesthetically pleasing aspect such as this.

I hope you aren't a programmer.

Have you ever played an MMO before besides Eve? Some games have dozens if not HUNDREDS of variables that change the way your character looks, and their servers handle it just fine. Six numbers is really not that much compared to the data thats already sent.

Furthermore, you don't have to send six numbers. You would just have to send the corp Id (which is probably an integer) from all the players in the system. Since the you don't have much variety in terms of making logos, I'm sure the possible combinations are less than 2^32 (4 billion). You can make a table of logoID's and their attributes. Once a player comes into view of your ship, your client would then just have to look up the logoId under the corpID entry, and load the texture accordingly. Also, you could set up a cache so you would only have to do this for corps you've never encountered before.

I'm sure there's even a more effecient way than what I said, that would work even better.

Eve needs the ability to customize ships (at least corp logos), badly. The fact that you can't takes away any feeling of individuality and style in the game. It's a total immersion killer IMO.

Those of you old enough to remember Earth and Beyond will recal that not only can you have your symbol but also your chosen ship name displayed on your ship, Also your ship was fully customizable from a range of prefabricated modules.

the detaikls were only loaded and shown when someone "looked" at your ship.

E&B was a much older and simpler game than Eve, Eve can and would handle this simple concept with out any additional lag.

That is any in addition to the tens of thousands of loot cans created each hour, not to mention the hundreads fo thousands of NPC ships the server controls, not to mention the millions of chat convos and messages and trade orders going on ever second........You get my point.

Its about bloody time we as paying customers (many of us since beta) are able to better personalise our avatars (our ships) and surely even a premade set of ship cosmetic addons and flags and ship names is a small and relativley simple thing to add.

After all they have spent months adding in content like Titans that only a fraction of the game population will ever see let along use.

Raise your hands for more populous content

In honesty, this wouldn't have a huge impact on the server performance... all it's sending is basicly a verification code saying okay, this player has THIS.
