i'm starting to get more interested in PVP and after reading a thread on the general discussion forum i'm considering moving full-time to 0.0 but have read a few times that caldari are kind of gimped in PvP and i was wondering what kind of advice more experienced players can give

i have about 3.1 million SP and can fly battlecruisers & within a few days, assault frigates, and will then be training up for battleships. most of my offensive skills are in missiles (surprise surprise) and i have a bunch of mechanic and navigation skills, and am pretty well versed in shield tanking

any advise is greatly appreciated. looking forward to heading out into 0.0

Yeah missiles are great if you plan to use Caldari ships for PvP. Just keep in mind that us Caldari rely on our shields to survive so watch out for enemies who would jump on top of you, webify, drain your cap, and pound you to debris.

In going to 0.0, make sure you're hooked up with a corp who's familiar with the area. Otherwise, heading in there on your own might result in your demise as some alliances/corps operate on a not blue, kill on sight policy.

good luck in your ventures!

This gimped claim is based upon the opinion of solo PvP fighters rather than group or fleet based combat pilots who have to be their own fleet to fill the roles of tackler, tanker and ganker. Our group like many others who have any concept of proper strategy use the Caldari and shield tanking Minmatar ships strictly for support roles such as long range gunnery,ECM and remote shield repair while the armor tankers tend to use their med slots as intended for warp scrammers and webbers or other needed items.

Some Caldari ships are versatile enough to be used in solo PvP, but this usually requires you to sacrifice your shield tank for tackling mods such as webbers and scrams. However, good Electronic Warfare skills and good use of the appropriate mods can make up for having zero tank.

Can't go wrong with a kessie, that thing will eat you up in pvp if you can get in close Very Happy ] I went into 0.0 about 20days into Eve as I found empire space far too boring, I went Calderi shortly after I got up to Gallente BC, the Calderi can rock in pvp it just takes a little imagination. My favs for pvp are the Hawk, Caracal (Cruiser 5, Warhead Upgrades 4, Heavy missles 5, Missle Ops 5, Bombardment 4, Missle Nav 4, Projection 4, Long Range targeting 5.. couple other I have forgotten, but you get the idea), that ship can seriously rock with the right skills in pvp, plus the missle nerf isn't too bad against frigs opposed to using torps on frigs Sad

Scorpion is BADASS in pvp if your Ewar and BS skills are high enough.. Just keep in mind any good FC (Fleet Commander) will prioritize you for destruction when they see you're jamming everyone.. But that just makes it all the more interesting. Twisted Evil

ah, so in effect these naysayers are right, given that my plan is for me to head out solo into 0.0 in Caldari ships (probably my Ferox, not sure I have the heart to lose a battleship trying this out) then I'm going to be at an inherrent disadvantage due to the layout of my low/medium slots?

with that in mind, if i were to go out there and had the stones to go in a battlship, then it would seem by this logic that the scorpion (with 8 medium slots) might be the best option as i'd still have some shield tanking ability, as well as some tackling abilities, which would be offset by having one less low, and two less high's - does that seem like a fair assumption?

lastly, how well do missiles work in PVP? I know they're great in PVE, but if I head out into the great unknown with a bucket-load of missile launchers, am i going to get my ass handed to me?

You can fit the Scorp with an uber tank, but there goes your jamming and tackling abilities. You can fit it as a heavy tackler, reducing jam and tank but it's still quite capable of surviving fights. However its damage potential is low compared to other BS as it has no range or damage bonii for weaponry.

Fit cruise missiles and you'll gimp cruisers quite effectively, but may struggle to break a BS' tank. Fit torps and you'll put the hurt on BS, but cruisers wont take as much damage. Railguns will also have a short range, and your tracking will be mince.

If you're going to take a Caldari BS into 0.0, take a Raven.

EDIT: Also <3 teh Ferox. Jack of all trades, master of none, it's the most versatile BC in the game.

In my own opinion and expierience Ive found Caldari ships to be very much as stated alone.... weak in solo PvP and very effective support ships in gangs of 5 or more.

As for T1 ships I'd really only recomend the Kestrel and the Battleships. Note that giving a Scorp' an uber tank can not only be effective..it must be effective. Its usually first to get tagged primary target.

Caldari really start to shine with T2 ships, where the Hawk can be a mini-sniper or use antimatter at a 13 km optimal and stay out oc cruiser / battlecruiser nos and web range.
The Crow is effective, but semi over rated for those that think its a solo pwn mobile. Per usual a smart pilot can fly it effectively (as with any ship) but true nightmare crows take alot of SP and exepensive faction mods. Raptor dps isnt that great due to no tracking bonuses on its gones but its a cheap high speed tackler in gangs.

Good luck out there.

While it is a versatile ship and I wont argue with that,it does have a specialty and thats sniping with 250mm rails. With lvl 5 sharpshooter, lvl 5 Battlecruiser(10% to hybrid turret optimal range) and 250mm railgun ll with spike ammo and 3 named or tech ll tracking enhancers your looking at ranges of 165km.It wont keep larger ships from running but its perfect for cheap fleet warfare and anti frig/drone insta poping.Think of it this way,you see a Ferox at 165km the first thing that runs through your head is "his missiles cant hit me from 165km but you can bet your insurance a rail fitted Ferox willTwisted Evil

Sadly have a feeling its versatility wont save it from the Drake though.
