So perhaps it's just me but does it feel like some ships are missing a sense of scale?

Matari BS to be more specific.

I was sitting at a gate the other day (not gate camping, just sitting there looking at scale) and I finally realized at least partially what it is: windows. Or lights that look like windows at least.

I was looking at the amarr BS, it's got lights down the side of it that are placed correctly for windows. Because there are so many and they are so small it upscales the ship when you have are [look]ing at it. It looks like a properly sized, huge Battle-ship.

My 'phoon? nope. It's got a big hole and some random lights down the side but no "window" lights. And because of that it sort of looses it's sense of scale. I followed the amar BS and was actually a bit surprised to see that the 'phoon was about the same size. I don't know, it just feels like it's missing something that properly gives it a sense of scale.

The 'pest too, it has the "bridge" windows but it's missing the other ones - plus the fins and what not, I dunno, it looks strangely fragile.

Anyway. I think that some ships should get windows at least, if only to help give them a sense of scale (and also for those of us who picture a full crew inside the things).

Or something.

I dunno - anyone else agree with me? Anyone else think there are some ships that are missing a sense of scale?

I mean, yeah when you're in a frig or cruiser and a 'phoon passes you you get the sense of scale there, but when you're actually flying one it just...seems to kinda miss it.

Just my opinion though, curious as to others thoughts.

The duct tape used on minnie ships doesn't seal against vacuum well enough, so no windows. Laughing

Seriously, cap ships need to be bigger.

the size-feeling is rather screwed...look at capital ships and you think you are flying a cruiser...

maybe its the textures...i dont know. maybe its the camera look. the size in meters will be right, but it doesnt reflect int he view...so you never get the feeling to see a big ship (not even capitals).

i once tried to do a great flyover on a charon frighter with a frig...doesnt work, its way too small to get a feeling of "something big"

It;s actually because in the usual space sim game you are a fighter... now compare the size of a fighter to its carrier. Or a BS. You get the picture. (FYI, a mega is like 1km in lenght)

you still dont feel thet 1km...try it, try to fraps a nice flyover with a frig on a capital ship...you wont get a feeling of "big"...

i recently played "freespace" again...there you had a feeling of BIG when a cap-ship arrives. EvE never managed that, even flying in the POD.

it has to be practical though to be used ingame...

imagine the state of a POS siege if the dreadnoughts were 20km long and wide...

You could blockade a gate just by parking a few dreads in the way...

Reducing it down to battleships again, they are common ships, imagine if they were bigger when trying to get out of jita, it would be 1 giant traffic jam (more so than it is now)

I would love like the guy said above to be able to fly over a carrier in a frigate and zoomed in it just goes for ages, but to be practical in eve it just cant be that big.

If u look at the size of a station and the size of a battleship, there is no way 50 BS can fit in there, yet they do...

Scale is a good thing, but if it gets too big it becomes more of a problem than is practically possible.

Eves playable areas are too small to warrent a "death star" sized ship, as it is the size of a small moon, u try flying round a moon manually, and i will see u in a week or 2... :)

when u think of larger systems that are 200 au in size...
think how much of that space is "used"

how big are the grids?
400km x 400km?

10 belts
1 station
8 planets
20 moons
4 gates

it isnt a right lot of the space that is "used" as a common playing area, having a few 20km long carriers, and a 30km long dread, with a few of the 1km long megathrons in one grid, and u arent warping anywhere without bumping...
