Heck, there is a lot of things to do outside of sit on your computer all day on Eve. Heck, there may even be.. people out there. Go say hi, I think they are your friends.

Before you make stupid comments like this. Go read my first post - top of page 2. Notice where I said I spent most of the day AWAY from EvE? Right. Now shush.

-G

You're not the only person that has a real life from eve too. I also spent most of my day away from eve and planned to get on in the evening and get some much needed ratting done to fill an empty wallet. I then see the game is down.

I shrug my shoulders, I feel the pain of the server techs who are obviously working full bore to fix whatever the problem is, I know first hand of how many things can go wrong with a simple desktop PC let alone something as complicated as the eve servers, and I wish them the best of luck.

I then (shock horror) put on a different game for the evening and enjoied that instead. I watched a movie, had a pizza and finished the night off by listening to my new CD. All in all it was a nice night and I didn't spend a bit of it fretting about EVE not being up and how I wasn't making ISK, or how 'inept' the CCP staff are supposed to be.

Also, you won't get compensated for in game losses. Read the EULA. But CCP have been known to issue a free day on all accounts if the server is down for a very long time. (And I don't think a few hours of the evening qualify).

The one thing I enjoy in this topic is the first 2 pages...
After being told by wystler that until they fix (or atleast identify) the problems people should avoid logging on, we get almost 2 pages full of idiots that log on anyways, and then complain about the server not functioning correctly.

"The server isn't working very well, so please refrain from logging on for the moment"

"My clone jump was bugged and now I cant log in at all because the server isnt working properly why didnt you tell me you all sucks!!!11!1

Stupidity FTW :D

on a brighter note...
It's nice to know that at least CCP care enough about their customers to inform them what is wrong (and even admit it when they don't know what is going on).

I'm really sorry about how unstable TQ has been lately.

This isn't some one thing that has been causing this, but as you know... when it rains it pours.

TQ has dropped nodes on startup due to a bug in the node readyness checks that makes the cluster let users log on before the cluster is ready, and so it crashes as users are authenticating while the nodes aren't ready.
This bug is fixed, the fix will be deployed in tuesdays patch and I've put in a workaround for it till then.
The reason for this bug starting to affect us suddenly now evades me, because this hasn't been a problem before.

The crash at 17:23 today was due to a thread in the SQL server crashing.
Normally, this would not have had any noticable effect on the cluster, but this time it caused the cluster watchdog process to error and assume that the cluster was down. That starts up a cleanup phase that kills all EVE server processes on the cluster.
I've put in a workaround for this issue by disabling the cluster watchdog and have a scheduled task run cleanup when downtime starts instead.

The unscheduled reboot around 20:00 was because the "Polaris" node, the node the GMs use for answering petitions and a node that runs a few adminstrative services, crashed for an unknown reason.
In most cases, this would be okay, the services are supposed to be automatically remapped to other nodes and restarted, but this time some of the services remained down, most noticably the "Cluster session info" service. Thats the service that provides the user count info.

After the latest reboot no nodes have died and all systems are up. *knock on wood*

I have to say again how truly sorry I am for the issues we've been experiencing and I promise to do everything I can to get us back on track.

Thanx for the update and all the hard work. We're pulling for ya!!

Thx for the info, As a EVE-vet with a couple of years playing this game i know **** happens.

Today the server seems stable though. Hope it will stay this way, seems valar kicked the server in the right place ;)

What about you give us something, like doubled bounty on the NPC Ships for a day or such, as a excuse?

I mean.. thats the second day with the unsheduled dt, so its fair, if you give us something, as a excuse.

And i mean.. Its in other mmorpgs the same, when something happends with the servers.

I think the word you need here is "compensation", not "excuse". But I still definently do not agree... why would anyone deserve presents when the server has problems? What have we done to deserve that?

I don't know if its happening everywhere, but the lag in the Fountain region has rendered the game virtually unplayable (only 25-30 in local and modules are taking 15-20 seconds to activate, grid takes forever to load with only a few on it, etc).

Time to go enjoy the sun.

Valar:

Thank you for the more technical info. Most services don't seem to get it, but user's aren't all stupid. It does put our minds at ease to hear at least some general behind-the-scenes facts about what's happening to a game we love, more than just an official statement saying "things aren't working, our people are on it, try again later". I truly appreciate CCP's willingness to share this with us.

I am still having problems logging in, etc.

Whatever the problem is, it isn't fixed yet.

We have had a lot of crashes since the last extend maintenance a couple of weeks ago. Maybe the existing problems should be fixed before adding new features, as mentioned earlier in this thread.

I'm pretty annoyed with the server performance. Is the massive lag we're seeing with 40 in local in YZ-LQL related to the server crashes? We're working pretty hard to have a good time, and the server performance is making it impossible.

I hope it gets fixed soon.

We have nothing done to deserve it, but its CCP fault that the Server Crashed, so we as Customer should get somthing. because i think many of us lose his Ship or even cans of mins yesterday. So there should be compensation as a excuse. Just look at all the flame threads here, CCP has todo something, or most of the guys will just leave.

And i really think that a "special" event should do something about it.

P.s: And hell yeah.. i totally suck in English, but i want to give my opinion too...

Look at the activity in other systems in your constellation, is it significantly above average? Look for a big blob in another constellation (as you don't know which ones you're sharing a node with). If you get unlucky and are sharing a node with a fleet battle, you're going to lag even with 1 in your local.

Does 3-4 jumps out take you into a different constellation? If so, you might have been on a different node, which would explain the change in performance.

I'd be very surprised if it did, given that Valar has said he's put fixes for these issues into the patch Wink

Matthew: there was horrible horrible lag in nearby constellations aswell, and no blobs or fleetbattles going on. YZ-LQL and surrounding systems were absolute trash from friday afternoon-ish, until last night. It was WAY worse than i remember ever before.

Thankfully it seems a little better today, so far.....*knocks on wood*

Now, I know nothing about the EVE server in specific, but I can say that on many servers there is a heck of a lot of lag when a server comes up from unscedueled downtime. What happens is that all of the data that these servers keep in RAM usualy gets dumped to a backup drive. That backup drive usualy isn't an ultra-high-speed drive, and so the server tends to be really sluggish.

The best advise that I usualy give to users on any other server is to "wait and see" because if the slowdown is really from the server having to un-cache the data it will work out on its own. Of course, I have no clue how the EVE servers run, if I did I would have a really cool looking icon next to me name and a nice golden box around my posts.

So as usual, this is semi-uninformed speculation drawn from personal expirience and training. CCNA ftw.
