Yep, people pay on a regular basis. However, there are also a lot who just calls your mother a ***** or something like that, and then dies horribly.

And yes, I'm afraid that all pirates in EVE are played by 12-year-olds, most of whoom also play Counterstrike and XBOX live, and they freak out and beat up pets and smaller children should they happen to die.

This is a how most pirates in EVE are. Just switch out the CS for EVE.

Actually, seeing how many carebears react when they get their ships blown up, I'm rather convinced that they are the general populace that we see in this vid.

It's not about being smarter or about economics. It's about honor. A good guy won't pay a bad guy. It's as simple as that.

Given on top the fact that there is *no* guarantee whatsorever that you don't lose your ship or get poped *after* paying a ransom, that makes it an easy decision: Never, ever pay a single ISK ransom.

The thing is, you have the opinion that you don't want to pay the bad guy. That's fine, if that's the honor you'd like to uphold it's perfectly understandable, but you will lose more isk than if you pay (if the ransom is too high don't pay anyway).

However, you seem to have the distrust of pirates that most of us don't honor ransoms, and as many times as it's been said I'll say it again, it's not good business to kill after a ransom because people will stop paying you. Word gets out very fast on these boards (every couple days you'll see a whine about some pirate) so if you don't honor it, people won't pay it. Most pirates do, so the decision is not so simply "Don't pay it's a waste and you'll get killed anyway," it's more of "There's a good chance that you'll leave with your life if you pay: is it economically worth it to pay?"

And that's where your honor comes in. You don't wanna pay the bad guy, I respect that. Won't make any less of them though.

I tried to ransom you tonight, but you got podded because you turned down my convo request. In fact I think you blocked me. I like belt piracy and getting ransoms from people. In answer to the latter part of your post I am 26, although some would argue my mental age differs :P

Oh, it's nothing compared to podding a carebear who is too stubborn to realize that ransoming is a privilege.

I have lost 2 Caracals to Pirates.
The first time he was in a Domi and I was in a Caracal, I would have gladly paid for safe passage but I was noob and didn't realise what I was in for.
I was never given the option to pay. So I went out guns blazing.

The second time I was attacked without any reason or offer to pay a ransom. This made me very bitter as I had just lost 1 Caracal 4 days before. What the hell is wrong with some Pirates that they would sooner blow you up than even ask if you would pay a ransom.

I would rather pay the ransom than have to rebuild another ship. I have no problem paying 5 mil for safe passage, but I want that safe passage from all other rats in the system also. If I pay a ransom I want to be able to get out of the system without being podded by someone else.

Of course people pay ransoms.

When you have their freighter, faction fitted BS or Carrier locked down people pay up pretty dammed sharp.

Depends how much people have to loose by dying compared to watching their hard work go up in a little explosion.

Iv tried to ransom many times, but with no success. Until tonight. We found a freighter with a crap insta, killed his protection, and proceeded to ransom. I don't think i was too greedy with my demand, and he paid quickly. Sweet first successful ransom IMO. Cool

atm if someone starts to shoot me when im killing rats then msg me for an obvious ransom, i cant even be bothered to talk, i didnt block you, just didnt want to speak to you.
maybe later when im actually gonna loose something i might start acknowledging people wanting to ransom me.
I got plenty of ships and wasnt carrying anything decent, so im not loosing anything and can afford to just ignore people like you.

Here's my pragmatic view.

I would pay only reasonable ransoms.

Consider this, I have no implants (or, I have +1 stuff that is worth maybe 1.5 million) and my clone is another 500k.

BS example ... yeah, I know this is a bad example but this is what I have the math on top of my head for.

My BS are insured platinum, costing me 33 milion, but also meaning I loose 17 million plus modules if I loose a BS (don't question my math, this is accounting for the the difference between average purchase price and full insurance payout). Modules, for me poor tech1 user, mean I loose maybe 1-5 million max.

So thats something between 19 and 24 million maybe lost on getting ganked in a BS. Would I pay a 19 milion ransom? Hell no!

Insurance is for 12 weeks. If I get pirated 10 times in 12 weeks, I have to pay insurance 10 times! In other words, the act of being pirated increases the likelyhood of being pirated again in the same 12 weeks.

Bottom line: I would probably pay a five million ransom on a BS (unless the pirate ****ed me off, in which case he'd get to collect tech1 loot). I'd maybe a ten million random. Definetly not a 20 million ransom. This is based on the assumption that I could be pirated about 2-4 times during an insurance period.

Since YARRRR!! people would never ask five million but probably 20 upwards or even 100 cause they think I have omgwtfbbq tech II loot and +4 implant sets, the bottom line is, no, I would probably not pay ransoms.

Buy a battleship at 100mil + insure platinum 30mil + fit with T1 mods 5 mil = 135mil.

Lose that battleship and get 100mil back. 135mil - 100mil = 35 mil. Therefore it is safe to ransom any battleship for 20-30 mil.

Any T1 shield boosters or armour repairers are useless so most people fit named or T2 which brings up the cost a few million.

A lot of people also fit other T2 and named gear. To be honest, you are better off flying a cruiser or BC than all T1 fitted battleship. Its much more cost effective in low sec.

Conclusion. Providing I managed to catch a battleship I will ransom it for 30-40 million without hesitation. If they don't pay I get to pop their egg which is always a pleasure.

I pay ransomes when am in my Indy. I prefer to part with a few millions than waste another hour moving stuff.
If I am in a fighting ship, I will die trying unless I have a HAC Embarassed. But yeah I will generaly not even wait to be ransomed, I will just ask how much to me pass.
