not really sure how to ask this question, im really confused.

1) Can you mess your character up if you dont choose one with the right starting stats in this game, like you can most others ?

2)I noticed you can buy skill books on the market. Does this mean your character is not limited to his starting skills ? Can you essentially train any skill available in the game if you purchase the skill book or is your character limited depending on character creation?

3)I noticed some skills train faster than others. What determines this ?? And do you have a choice of which ones you can train faster at in the beginning ?

I guess im just worried about starting and in 2 months wish i started my character a different way, its happened in many other games. I love pvp so im sure I want to be a fighter, but can you also have a top tier trade and be a top tier fighter as well?

I been playing for about 5 hours, totally confused, made 3 characters already, and if I have to delete one to start him out on the correct path I guess i have to wait 10 hours for one to be deleted heh :)

You can try this site to go through the various character posibilities rather than using your character slots and then having to wait 10 hours.

Choosing the "wrong stats" (If there's such a thing) will only affect training times for skills. Granted, that's pretty damn important. There's certain guidelines for creating a character with attributes best suited to your intended career. For example, an industrial charater is best provided with high Memory and Intelligence skills, as mining, production and research skillbooks all make use of those 2 attributes. The higher you have them, the faster you learn new skills. You can increase your base attributes as well - this is done with implants and Learning skills. There's also the Learning skill itself, which is pretty self-explainatory.

Every skills is available on the market (Check the "Schooling" stations, like the one your start in when you first logged in) for training, provided you meet the initial requirements. Most books are pretty cheap, while there are some books that can cost 800 million ISK. Don't worry about those for now tho, bit too early :) Like I said before, only your attributes determine the speed of how fast you learn new skills.

See 1 and 2.

Meh... Don't worry about it too much. If you want to be perfectly safe, try to go for some all-round attributes.

Well, while its not possible to completely mess up your character, choosing attributes that are the major ones for the skills you wish to focus on does seriously help your training times.

Yep, thats exactly how it works. You buy the skillbooks of the things you want to train. Basically you buy them, right click the skillbook ,and select "Train Skill" and it will be added to your skills list and you will start training Lvl 1 of that skill.
Theoretically, one person could train all the skills in the game, but that will take years to do...and in the beginning, specialising is the way to go.

If you right click and do a show info on the skill, in the attributes you will see "Primary Attribute" and "Secondary Attribute". You characters attributes (as listed in the skill) affect how fast you train the skills with the Primary Attribute giving full effect and the secondary attribute giving 1/2 effect....as far as I remember.

You can do what you want, just remember that your starting attributes affect how fast you train different skills.

1)
well i dont know about "mess up" but yeah depending on what sort of path your after there are better and worse attributes to start off with. for combat only I'd take an even spread of perc, will, int and memory. with a low charisma.

2)
You can learn anyskill in the game, so long as you have trained the required skills already. just buy the skill book, learn it to get level 1. then after that you just need to set it trainnig to level it up

3)
Some skills train faster and slower than others due to 3 factors:
a) your atributes. different skills rely on different attributes to train them. the higher your attributes for those skills the faster it trains.

b) the level of a skill.
Level 2 will take longer than level 1. Level 3 more than 2...and so on :) level 5 usually takes much longer than levels 1 to 4 combined.

c) the rank of a skill. a rank 1 skill needs less skill points and so less time to learn it when compared to say a rank 6 skill.
for example a rank 1 skill took me 6 days to learn level 5
a rank 6 skill needing the same attributes took me 27 days to learn level 5.

^^I made those figures up to illistrate, but its pretty much like that

Thanks for the help everyone ! That takes away most of my confusion, guess I have to pick a "Main" path, and start with that, being anything seems possible in this game, I can always steer off to a secondary path for some versatility, thanks again.

1) Not actually, however learning speed of skills depends on base stats, if you have some attribute low, than skill that depend on that attribute will train faster. Can be fixed with right set of implants and/or learning skills.

2) Yes, ofcourse, you can train any skill you want, assuming you have the requirements for it met and the isky it costs

3) Skill training time depends on the "Primary Atrribute" and the "Secondary Attribute" fields. The attribute, listed in "Primary Attribute" field affects learning time greatly (the higher the attribute, the faster the skill train) it means, if you double the attribute, training time will halve or something like that. "Secondary Attribute" also affects skill training time, but not as much as the primary one.

There is a special group of skills, that increase attributes, these are called "learning" and "advanced learning" skills (you'll find them in an "Learning" subsection of skills section on the market). It is highly recommended tu have the advanced ones learned up to 4th level (might take a time, since each advanced learning requires analogic basic learning skill to be trained up to 5th level), however this makes incredible impact on how fast skill learns (halves every training time or even more, depending on starting attributes).

also you might increase your attributes by using implants, that increase certain attribute (implant slots 1 to 5), these might be found under implants->attribute enhancers section of the market.
