I am going to be focusing in on mining for doing my "main thing". But I do not want to burn out on it and wanted to go shoot some npc types in .7 space or so.

So I am wondering if my skills are going to be focused in on mining for the most part, very little combat, would either of these be better for the lower npc pirates? I was thinking the destroyer might be best with so many turrent/hi slots available.

Or should I get in a higher level frigate? I have an imicus now, would a tristam be a better choice?

Thanks for any advice

To shoot rats in 0.7 you can just use a frigate with no problem. Even your Imicus could do that if you set it up right, but a Tristan or an Incursus would be perfect. In fact, as you get your setup right and some skills you could take either of those frigates down to 0.5 and do any level one combat missions too, which might be a little more interesting and useful for you in the long run than just shooting the high sec belt rats.

You can take a Tristan even lower than 0.5, but you're likely to run into player pirates sooner or later and your Tristan will not have much of a chance against them if they catch you so you'll have to think about whether you are ready or interested in that.

Of course a destroyer or a cruiser could do it too - but you dont need them for what you said. If mining is your main interest, you're going to want to get into a cruiser when you can, but a destroyer is not necessarily worth doing then.

If I were you, I'd get a fighting frigate, learn to fight and try it out on rats and a few missions for a break from mining, and build my skills and pocketbook for a cruiser.

Both are useful - destroyer is easier to train (racial frigate III vs racial frigate IV). Cruisers however can get better yield once sufficient skills have been obtained.

The best mining destroyer is the Cormorant - has CPU for up to 5 mining lasers.

My Cormorant mounts 5 XeCl which = 235m3 x mining skills/mods per minute.

My Osprey Cruiser mounts 3 Miner II = 180m3 + 20%/cruiser level x mining skills/mods, so I need Cruiser II to have a higher yield, but could get up to 53% more yield with Cruiser V.

These are Caldari - not all races have as good mining destroyers / cruisers. These can also defend themselves while jetcan mining down to about 0.6 with basic gunnery/missile/drone skills.

I use a Scythe for mining; 3x Miner II & 1x Small Tractor Beam in the HI, 1x AB, 1x Surveyor, 1x Large Ext in the MID, and 3x Co-Processor in the LO.

With Cruiser 3, Mining 4, and Astrogeology 3, it pulls 360 M per minute. For a combat pilot, I think that's pretty good. :) My only weapon is a single scout drone, the explosive damage one for the angels that buzz around me like gnats in hi-sec. They can't break my passive tank, regardless.

For Gallente, an Exequror will work for mining and rats. The skills will take a while but you can fit an Ex with 3 miner IIs, a small rail, and 4 drones. This will work down to 0.5 spce which will get you to Omber. You could actually install another miner ( probably a I or a Gaussian due to cpu problems) but I need something to shoot, so I fitted the rail.

I still use my Ex for 1.0-0.5 mining, and I easily handle rats without stopping my mining operation. Since cargo hold goes up with levels on an Ex, you can easily get 1000 m3 space with good mining efficiency. Generally when I arrive in belt I kill the 3 or 4 rats and just mine away until they re-pop.

The destroyer has the slots, but cpu is rather limited, it has no hold to speak of, and has no mining bonuses. If you just want to hunt rats, a frigate does well down to 0.3. It will take out the npc frigs/destroyers, and while it can't break the tank of some npc cruisers in 0.3, the cruisers can't hit you either. An Incursus works well, but I prefer the Rifter.

Keep in mind that an Exequror will be destroyed rather quickly if unescorted in low sec. It's pretty flimsy for a cruiser. I guess that's why the built Vexors and T-Rax. Love my Vexor, btw.

edit: When I say "drones", I mean fighter drones, not miner drones, - might be confusing to a rookie.
