Make skill for it.

Like "Warp Drive Navigation" skill would give -3km to destination while warping to something.

At lvl ppls would be able to warp to 3km to gate or station, on lvl it would work as an insta.

There is no solving other thatn that. No-one can forbid using instases, so workaround must be found. That kind of skill will remove bm copying, putting in peoples&places and thus will reduce server load.

Also it may be okay to make one rule: Player has to go through gate/dock at station for at least 5 times before this skill will be in effect. That will make sceptics more happy.
It may be because on-board computers must proprrly remember where to warp not to hit the object.

I was about to make a post with the same idea.

This skill would reduice the minimum warp in range from 15k at level 0, to 0k at level 5, replaceing the need for instas. here is some thoughts on how it could be implimented

firstley, this skill should be up there in requirements, probelly requireing arp driver operation 5 as well as starship command 5, this would still mean that noyt everyone in the world has this skills to 5...honistley people with enough SP's to have a skill with high requirememts already have inmstas anyway..so it would change little.

An idea on how it would work. in the warp to option, a new item called "warp to close" is added, leaveing the 15k. Also this item is NOT avaliable as a gang warp, so you can't just have one guys with the skill moveing a whole fleet around. I guess the wayh it is now this would be a boomark 'nerf'. Or it could be a gang option as well, wich would make it just about how it is now..I don't think I have ev en been in a fleet that dosent haved all the instas, when one person dead ends we transfer lead to whoever has them and keep moveing)

I have to agree with the OP that at this point, you can't remove instas form the game, they are far to accepted by the player community. If you want to lessen the lag caused by bookmarks,. some sort of reaplcement that does the effectivley the same thing needs to be added, and a skill is a good way to go.

and IMHO, yes every carebear miner haveing instas to everywhere in the galexy will suck ass, but if that means I can open people and places without damn near crashing my client It would be worth it

The primary impact this would have would be to allow the advanced griefers to roam at will, busting skulls and nuking newbies with total impunity, with an instadock to every station and an instawarp to every gate, while crippling the poor honest miners who have three million skillpoints and just want to be able to haul their ore through a gate to refine it at a better station.

No system that gives high-SP characters a greater advantage over low-SP characters than they already have will be adequate. You may as well eliminate instas altogether and make the whole galaxy 0.0, so that PvP capability is once and for all the only thing that matters.

so it's exactley like it is now then?
pirates use instas. acually, in my experence, pirates are far more on top of their instas then the miners in the area, hence why they are able to get kills. and a 3mil SP guy guy coudl easly have this skill trained up to a good level, even makeing it a tir 2 like I said.

and as to your point about high SP chars haveing an advantage to low SP chars....how do you think it is now? new players dont have the cash to guy a insta set for 10 mil, with this skill by the time a trueley new player can raise the funds to buy an insta set, they could already have this skill trained up.

The negative effects implementing a skill or method for people to get in closer to their target outweigh the lag of using bookmarks.

With the current system, bookmarks require someone to spend time to create them and thus they have to be able to be in a system for some time. Once the bookmark is created it normally only works when approaching the desired target from one direction and also requires the player to manually select/activate warp from a listing.

Even with the complications and possibility for error it is still very difficult to catch someone who has setup bookmarks.

I foresee a few of the issues being:
  • Players no longer need to take the time to bookmark systems even if they have not been there.
  • Travel time is further reduced making multiple jump trips extremely fast.
  • Blockades become even harder or impossible to make.
  • Slower ships are no longer vulnerable when traveling.
  • Pirates can quickly exit the system to avoid NPC or PC intervention.
  • Auto-piloting would not have to be monitored.

While there are many other effects, I think just one or two of the above is reason enough to leave the manual system in place.
