You realize other players can kill you in .4 and below sec zones and concord will NOT come to your aide!

Methinks you're taking the wrong approach. Your question should be, "Where are the high priced mining areas?" Just my opinion.

Previous replies notwithstanding, open your map. In the control panel, go to Display Settings->Stars. Color Stars by Security Status.

One thing that has been a huge help to me finding things in this game is a 2D map guide that you can find at this link 2D maps

I simply printed out the system I had made my home in (yours would be Essence) and kept that next to the keyboard. The map shows the security level for each system so you don't get yourself in trouble if you pay attention, and it also shows where complexes are and what level they are.

As for where asteroids are, just about every system will have a few belts in them. You simply right click on some empty space and then follow the menus for asteroid belts that you can then warp to. Just remember, in 0.0 to 0.4 low security systems, not only will the npcs shoot you, but players will too. If you are just starting out, stay in 0.9-1.0 systems as there won't be any npc pirates and players can't attack you without getting blown up by Concord.

if you want to try some low sec mining, try Amodeia (spelling) its a few jumps out, but its surrounded by high sec, so less pirates there.

Derelik (think thats what it's called) is a pretty somewhat empty region, and has some omber and kernite, as well as a few stations.
