I recently attacked a -2.4 sec rated player with a 100k bounty in 0.4 space, assuming that concord's response would be slow enough that I wouldn't have much trouble killing him and escaping...
I was wrong, the sentry guns at the gate immidiately opened fire on me, destroying my ship. I had neither Missles nor Smart Bombs, so I wasn't doing any splash damage (unless they added splash to rails...)

Any ideas on why the Sentry Guns attacked me? I assumed it would be safe due the fact that 0.4 systems are so often camped by pirates, who obviously are not attacked by Sentry Guns.

Thanks for the info.

PS: CCP has continually ignored my petitions asking about this. Thanks for the awesome customer support CCP!

Sentry guns will always try to kill you, it seems. CONCORD ships/navy ships however won't come to get you in 0.4 and lower.

So the secret to finding campable 0.4 gates is the ones without sentry guns? Unless you have -10 sec rating...

Yep, death to all carebears who think that its okay to shoot people just because they have higher sec rating than them!

I'll admit I'm uninformed (that's why I started this thread, no?) but I was hunting someone who attacked a corpmate.

Live and learn though, no real harm done.

ok FYI: You cannot attack someone near sentry guns unless he has a -5.0 or worse security rating, no matter what security system you are in. You'll get shot down immediatly.

It really shows you who's more intelligent when they don't know the difference between 'Intelligence' and 'Lack of Information'.

You can memorize the Encyclopedia Britannica, but it wouldn't help you on an IQ test. Doh!

i attacked a -7.7 20k bounty pirate outside a station and was still shot at (didnt lose my ship) by the sentry guns.

Now i refuse to even shoot arrogators near a sentry gun.

If you want to pop someone near a sentry gun at a station, you need to get out of range of the guns. From what I know you're talking something in the area of 56km away from the station to do so without being taken out.

Mind you, I've seen some patch notes that suggest the defensive and offensive capabilities of sentry guns have been increased, so that distance may be even further away now.

So even if they have a sec rating of -5.0 or lower you have to be out of SG range? That's no good... Concord won't attack you if they're -5.0 or lower though, right?

Well - to be sure to NOT get attacked by concord or sentrys then only attack when u get attacked first! When getting attacked by missile then wait till missiles HITs you.

Attacking a PC near a gate with sentrys --> no good plan
Attacking a PC near a station with sentrys --> no good plan

So: again, wait until u get attacked first or be at 0.0 ... there where most of the Ps are ;)

edit: jep, devs should have a look at this issue

-5.0 or lower is free game everywhere, no matter sentries concord etc.

But ofcourse if you launch 5 torps to a guy that hasnt even left the docking bay of a station, you'll get owned because of splash damage.

i hadnt even used a single weapon. i opened up with ecm's and warp disruptor against a -7.7 20k player pirate and still the sentry guns of that station thought i was in the wrong.

I warped away as soon as i jammed and sentries lit me up. no splash damage unless ecm-spatial destabilizer has components im not aware of.

bit annoying but i lived so not as much of a problem.

i avoid shooting anyone not in my corp if im at a gate or station from the principle that i have no idea what ccp says is true or not and theres enough bugs to warrant caution at all times from freak incidents.

Any offensive EW is now deemed aggression. WEb, scramble, jam, whatever.

As for "hey, what are the rules about when/where I can shoot someone without Concorde/sentry guns going nuts", I agree with the above post, the answer is "roll the dice". Since the patch there is no predictability whatsoever to when/if an agressive action will get a response. Some people have discovered exploits in which they can shoot you in >0.4 space without any response at all, allowing them to whack noobs á la mOo in their old Lonetrek days. Others have found that they are getting labelled aggressors for returning someone else's fire, attacking NPC pirates or even pursuing a sanctionned war, and this is using turret attacks rather that missiles, etc. Hopefully we all know not to use any splash damage weapons around non-hostile players or NPCs. If not, go back to Combat 1.0, you musta failed the exam.

So basically there is 1 or more serious bugs in the security response system. I no longer mess with NPC pirates at gates at all, and don't even loot cans near gates anymore and I sure as heck don't shoot at other players in Empire space even if I *should* be able to. Once it's fixed, hopefully we can get back to normal, but there is no way I'm losing a ship to a "misunderstanding with the authorities". There's already enough PKers willing to do that for me :)

FYI, I suspect the main reason that these issues are not more widespread is that most of the truly powerful and experienced combat players are in 0.0 space where most of the issues are irrelevent. And of course many of the best are PKers who aren't *supposed* to be allowed into secure space.

I'd love to hear CCP's response to this... seems a serious issue that needs to be dealt with. If people are getting attacked for shooting NPC pirates, players who attacked them, players they are at war with, and in other such absurd situations then I proclaim "BROKE" and deem that CCP should get cracking on it.

The massive complain the carebear made concerning the security have done its job.

The security status you see on a system, doesnt mean nothing much now. Unless you are in 0.0, if you see a sentry gun and you fire on someone into the sentry gun range, it will shoot you. Thats all. That way people wont have to work in team to make security for they friends and everyone can mine Scodite and kernit in peace.

Hurrah!

Hate to say this, but CONCORD does not patrol exit points, especially those in .6 or lower. I got pod-killed in a .4 sec system before I could even get "into" the system by the *darn* BioMass CartelMad.

It seems to me sebtry guns will react to any form of aggression, apart from that started by npc rats. Therefore, take on board the following.
1. Do not initiate or respond to npc rats at a gate. They are tiny and will make little dent to your shields anyway.
2. Do not initiate aggression on a player at a gate..no matter what sec rating they are. Instead follow them through the gate and get them at jump in point of you're quick enough (no sentry guns there)
3. If a player locks on to you, do not respond apart from wave back and say hello. If they intitiate aggression, they will get blown away not you.

I came across a camped gate once, they were using the sentry guns to blow away players who responded to their lock ons. I simply ignored them and continued to take the cans of their victims whilst they watched on. Some cans could be id'd to original players and I did return those items to them.

The fact that people are still losing ships or being attacked in this way disgusts me.

CCP have steadfastly failed to properly inform players of game changes such as these they have a critical and costly effect on the hard work of players.

If a player can't attack someone with a Evil or Very MadEvil or Very MadEvil or Very Mad bounty, then they should change the bounty placement rules.
