Ok hello, Drone skills and abilitys are fine.

The problem is this
Example:
I got a new BC a Prophecy (sorry might be spelled wrongRolling Eyes)
I got 5 light drones in the bay
I release them after I am surrounded by smaller ships to close for my guns to hit easyly
I tell them all to attack my target they start attacking.
At this point you prolly reading this thinking ok ya thats what they do.

But after they kill that target they pick random targets, this would not be a problem if these targets were to be aggresively attacking targets.

But instead in this case i was being attacked by 4-5 frigs all with in 1 to 5km of my ship. I am in a complex 4 of 10 and there are other ships 35+ km away that are not attacking my and do not have me targeted. My drones pick there random targets and i see 4 of the 5 shoot way over to the Large colliable structurs 35Km away and start attacking them ... which agros the ships near them and these ships followed the drones back to ME. This would be bad if i had not had a setup that can tank the whole dang complexExclamationExclamation

QuestionQuestion Am i the only one that sees an issue with this ... drones attacking a target that is not even close to me and cant possibly be attacking me is NOT right.ExclamationExclamation

IdeaSimple things for the drones to ask before they pick a target...
  • ArrowIs this target currently attacking my controller?
  • ArrowIs this target within 'x' range of my controller (x being supplyed by the controler)
  • ArrowAnd an optional one I like to have set ... Does my Controller WANT me to pick my next target or return and orbit after each kill?

Laughing
This is such a simple change is it not?
... ughCrying or Very sadugh ....

Yes the drone AI is stupidly thick, i would love to see this upgraded but i don't think its a high priority, your best bet is just to keep a very close eye on your drones and as soon as the target is about to die get ready to order them to the next.

Better make drones automatically attack hostile object closest to the ship. Or have a behavior menu for drones where u can choose and add targets for drones in order.

For ex,
Drone bahavior menu:
Combat Drones
I-attack priority
I I-closest agressive
I I-farthest agressive
I I-clostes hostile
I I-farthest hostile
I I-weakest hostile
I I-strongest hostile
I I-custom
I I-drag targets from overview
I I1. Serpentis Invader + 3,456mI
I I2. Habitat # 20km I
I
I-return to drone bay
I I-when 50% armor
I I-when structure left
I I-when no hostiles present
I I-manual
Mining Drones
I
I etc...

That would be kewl...

would be nice if droens only auto attacked the next thing u have lcoked if u dont have nay thing locked they should come back to u and orbet u.

Drones do need to be looked at, but it is nice that they will engage non-locked tatgets, because sometimes you are being fired upon and cannot lock back. Wink

My drones never auto-aggro anyone after I pick the first target. They always return to me and orbit, then I have to manually tell them to attack the next target.

Your situation fairs much better than mine.

Here's what happenes. I warp in, I land too close to a rat/pirate. I immediately target and release my drones then I attempt to set range so my turrets are effective.

Without having laid the first shot, or taken fire, any command for my drones to engage is consistantly ignored. The only way they initially engage is if my target fires at me, or I fire at them, then the drones get in gear and attack.

I think this is a BS flag a hundred feet high. If I target something, and tell my drones to attack, they should attack without any preemptive strikes... they should be able to preemptively strike on their own.

Say I'm mining, all turrets are miners and I have drones for protection. They will not engage a locked target unless they shoot me first.... it's a real situation that brings out the sailor talk in all of us... "F*CKIN' DRONES ENGAGE!!!!"

Currently trying to keep your drones under control is like herding cats. Given free reign, they will attack everything, sometimes including neutral structures. If you don't want your drones to go wild, you have to give them a new target at the exact instant when they destroy their old one.

Problem:
The current behavior of combat drones is rather sloppy. On the one hand, you need to target lock something in order to put the drones in attack mode. On the other hand, once they are in that mode, no further target locks are required.

Solution:
Mining drones have two commands, "Mine" and "Mine Repeatedly". I think combat drones should get two commands as well, "Engage Target" and "Fire at Will":

"Engage Target" means attack the current target, and Stand Down (that's "Return and Orbit" for the drones that can move) when unable to continue to attack it (because it was destroyed, warped out, the drone got jammed, etc.).

"Fire at Will" means do what they normally do after killing the current target: attack everything in sight, no target locks required.

Heh - i dunno about you empire people :P but in 0.0 that has saved my a** before, there has been quite a few times i have had a scorp/bb jam me and a inty/frig warp in on me, i just deployed drones and the instant the inty/frig attacks the drones go for him straight away - no need for me to lock, can be very handy when used properly, with the new 'drones attacking anything after destroying first target' that used to happen anyway, just befoer they didn't fire till they got close (ie didn't aggress), now they start firing straight away from ages away even if they can't hit, so that gets you aggro straight away unlike before, basically now you have to already have the right click open and the mouse over 'return and orbit' and be ready to click it the instant the target is destroyed if not a half second early, it stops it from then going after everything else, at least that's what i found, basically the drones do need more hands on micro-managing now than before, and the sugested above AI options sure would be nice for more adv warfare.

Drones are Dumb, You need to control, them , Its not a Matter of releasing them and letting them Pwn everything. you need to monitor them or you don't deserve to have them.
The Drones attack anything thats given a hint of aggression That doesn't mean YOU, that means if YOU or The Drone has been Aggro'ed the drones will swarm them.

hmmm well the thing is ive done co op missions and they have started attacking corp mates to i was helping a newbie on a level 1 mission and my droen started to attack him as CEO i was quite embarassed he wasnt even locked but he was shooting a rat near me - CCP the AI is now endangering corp mates as well as unnecessary targets is this intended if so youre going to have a lot of players in corps being attacked indirectly and totally un warranted just attackign corp mates to

This is untrue they will attack structurs in complexes, which cant aggress ME or the Drones. however with the new agresstion timers if i attack a group and a structure is part of that group then that might make that structure a aggresed target althought not a danger to me or the drones.
Also the main point to this thread is not to have them be released and then not have a need to control them. The Point is they need to have more options for that control.

My guess is that your skill for the range at which u can send a drone to attack is likly under 20km or at the least low. mine is at 40 or 45km cant remember exactly i ussally never use them unless im surounded but little frigs.
But before i incressed my drone range i never had this problem ether now i do.

And Captain Havoc -
the changes i sujested would not stop them from agressing non targeted ships. the changes would only let u as the controler pick how far from you to pick targets or if u want them to.

Sonofollo Caldari
My guess is that ether this other player was using an AOE (area of effect) weapon like a smartbomb or had accadently targeted a drone ... which i have done before with my oun drones :) or maybe u guys were not in a gang other then being corp mates

WinkLast thing i wanted to add is I kinda wish a Dev would post something about this as wellWink

This isn't going to go away, especially now that drones fire from where they are regardless of range. I can never let my drones destroy a ship in complexes anymore, because they bring the entire complex down on my head.

Bump.
