I know this is some infantile "hacker" speak, but why is it used SO MUCH? It is so stupid and cliche'd.

Why a P instead of an O?

What is the point? Did some individual make up this language? If they did.....Why?

Why don't people just use Klingon....I mean...heck....it has a dictionary AND the Holy Bible is translated into it.

Or better yet......JUST USE ENGLISH! or GERMAN! or whatever recognized national language you use.

It is Monday...Reading the forums......Getting a little disturbed.

Can anyone give me some insight?

My understanding is that it started by accident, someone fat-fingered a post, it generated a lot of interest and BAM a new slang term was invented.

Its pretty much an Internet slang term now, rather than just leet speak.

Can't really stop it now, its a bit too late.

Nobody uses leet anymore, it died 5 years ago.

Pwned has simply become internet slang.

I think i recall a mod for Warcraft II, where the moderator had made a typo.. Pwned instead of Owned. And that started the wave.. I might be wrong though!

the term pwned comes from warcraft.
the cheapest unit you can build in warcraft is the peasant.
he chops trees and mines ore with his axe.
he isn't supposed to fight but he can.
if you get owned with peasants you got pwned.

There are so many theories - consencus seems to be it comes from Quake. When in doubt on almost anything check out wikipedia:

i heard it came from games like the oringal UT, where a player got so OMGWT*Owned that it was siad that it was enitivable, and set in writing., therefore pre-owned, and then got shot down to Pwned Aka Preowned

i know ppl who use it like this...

OMGWTFZORS you Got Pwned so bad it was ordered last weekend!! Blah Blah blah...n00b.

If you were killed by a truly 7337 haxx00r he would've used "pwnt", not "pwned". Very Happy

I always thought it was a UT thing. Back in the day everyone said Owned but then Pizza Hut came out with their silly P'zone pizza thing. For a while then everyone was saying P'zowned which later got shortened to pwned.

Most common explantion I've heard is "pawned" too. Who really knows anymore? Internet slang has evolved into it's own dialect at this point, completely separate from leet.

From what i know, it came from Quake's big tournament where the winner tried to quickly type "owned" before the final screenshot was captured, but mistyped it as "pwned". Since thousands of people where watching it, it caught on.

I, however, use the word "pwned" not in the meaning of "owned", but due to it's phonetical similarity to the word "Pawn", as in the smallest chess peice.

From here, i use it two ways:

Pawned, as in killed by a pawn, i.e. killed by the smallest peice - in other words: you got greatly outplayed (not overpowered)

OR

Pawned, as in used up like a pawn (pawns are usually sacrificed for other peices in chess), i.e. you got played (like someone using you as a decoy without you even knowing it) - on other words: you were insignificant

So, there is a bit more meaning behind the word when i say "pwned" ;)

But regardless of the meaning people apply behind it, the general idea stays the same. And there is nothing "hacker" or "leet" like about this word. It's the same internet slang as "lol" or "gtg"

Over 30 yeargs ago I began playing chess and the phrase powned was used all the time in reference to losing a valuable piece to a pawn. I think it just got shortened because people are lazy..hence pwned.

Pwned isn't even internet speak anymore. I've heard several people say it in real life, including* a university lecturer.

Look at your keyboard - the O is typed with the right hand. Look at the key immediately to the right of the O... hey,it's a P!

The term has existed for quite some time - it's definitely older than UT and probably was used even before Warcraft. It has nothing to do with "pawns" of any kind - it's just a mistyping that stuck.
