I lost a Thorax doing missions to a similar event.

Stage 5 of Angel Extravaganza (level 3)

Going along all happily, Hardeners on, Rep going, when suddenly I noticed my shields recovering, my drones + guns weren't showing any status on hits/misses, similarly for the Rats shooting me, after about 20 seconds of this I started getting a sinking feeling, and tried to warp out, nothing happened. After about two minutes of this I finally unlagged... to find myself at about 20% structure, blinked, and I was in my pod.

Petitioned it, but there was no server-side data to backup my claim. Thankfully I had the isk to get myself a new rax and fully set it up.

To be fair though, this was the first time I've ever had a petition turned down, although the other times were due to system lag where modules failed to activate (but damage was still being done properly) which is slightly different circumstances.

I'm just glad you didn't lose your CN Raven to this Aelius, because its doubtful (in fact I'd say you'd have 0% chance) of getting it back through petitioning.

Edit: Oh and I agree with earlier posts - The GMs can only replace what their logs backup was lost due to CCP's end, and if the logs dont back it up then unlucky us Sad

P.S. ... Was meant to post this with Kharl Pax not my Alt Sad

Just to play devils advocate on the GM's part. How do they tell that "the impossible" happened because of lag, or because you were afk? In both instances, there would be zero indication that you did anything.

What could be added to the log that would make it obvious that "the impossible" happened because of lag, and not because you had one too many tacos and made an emergency trip to the bathroom?

I've had it with the lag. I've tried doing the same mission twice a day for the last three days, and every single time I've lagged out somewhere along the way. I have to quit eve so it autowarps me out and pray my shield tank holds up while it counts down the timer.

This game has been unplayable the last week.

What I posted a few times is that there should be at least an option that defensive modules should get activated after the server detects an unwanted connection loss.
I'm npc'ing with a Raven, too and I was close to loosing my ship just because I got disconnected in a situation where my XL shieldbooster wasn't activated. A XL shield booster is something that you activate on demand, often when you're maybe down to 25% shield and then just for a short time.

Once I saved my Raven when it was already in structure. A few seconds later it would have been destructed. The combination: Seraphim and Warlord shooting at you and then a cdt or connection loss while your shield-booster is off is not much fun. Shocked

I agree 100% that GMs should be allowed to use common sense.

I lost a taranis once to some guy in a destroyer because none of my modules would activate. I petitioned and challenged the GM to explain why I would let my expensive, low insurance payout ship, be slowly destroyed without raising a finger to save it. Fair enough it wasn't the GMs fault but the rules should be more open. The only problem is some people (I like to include myself among them) can be very persuasive if they put their minds to it and this system could be exploited.

I think GM's can be accused of having no access to the network logs...

They should be able to look up the time of the lag, and check the amount of packets sent/received in that time. AFAIk EVE sends packets constantly, so any 2 minute period of no packet traffic should point to the obvious - even if it's an isp problem, packets might be sent, but not received on the server, so that's a good indication of what happened too.

Or, it could be that the GM's just don't bother checking that kind of log :P

While it sounds good in theory, this is hugely open to abuse.

All I'd have to do is make sure no more packets reach the server, which is laughably easy for somebody with a little networking or IT experience. Most of the time it's enough to hit the power switch on your router.... YARRRR!!

No data that the user can fake on purpose should be allowed to be part of the decision process for reinbursement.
