Ok, so for quite a while now, my Eve client's taken to randomly closing. It doesn't freeze or anything, it just quits the client, exactly the same as it would if I'd hit the red x or ctrl+q. It always happens when I do something, like go through a gate, exit warp, etc, so I guess it might be something to do with it loading.

Does anyone know what causes this? And more importantly, what stops it?

It always happens when there's about to be a fight, and by the time I log back in, I've missed it. This sucks balls.

Happens to me if i keep any mp3 player in the background (foobar in any output mode, winamp,...) as soon as i cut it out, no problem.

Sucks a bit, as my computer got no stability problem(s), thanks...

I run a mobile XP 2400+, NF7v2 motherboard, nvidia 5.10 pack of drivers and tried with 4.57 sound driver..

Oh of course, sound is disabled in eve.

Happens to me all the time too. Just like Sangxianc said, always when I'm "doing something" like jumping through a gate, docking, and nearly every time I receive an eve-mail. Quite annoying.

Sorry to hear you guys are having so many problems.

1) make sure all your graphics drivers are upto date.
2) try not to run to many applications at the same time msn etc
3) try running the game in windows mode (i know the graphics are not as good be on some systems it runs more stable than in full screen).

Alt + Enter to get into windows mode btw, if all this doesnt help i would uninstall defrag my harddrive and re-install, why i hear you ask. Simple fact that when you install a game on a fragmented HDD the files are places all over the HDD and when it comes for the game to find the files it needs it has to seek the files all over the drive and this tends to slow things up. (this maybe the cause of the crashing).

This may help it may not but each system is different
ugh

P.S.

also look in C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\logs\history.txt it will log each crash Cool

It does the same thing to me. At first I thought it might have been a problem with my graphic card, it was an ATI at the time and I didn't like ATI, so I switched to an GeforceFX5500. Still did it.

Ok, maybe it's a heating problem. Switched all my cable to rounded cables, added 2 fans. Still did it.
I thought it might have been my power supply, so I changed it for a 500w modulator (still thinking it might be heat related) and it still does it.

Now, I thought maybe I had too much utilities running (TS, MSN, Winamp, a couple browsers) so I bought a laptop and run all of those on there now... and yes, it still does it.

Funny thing is, I'll turn on the PC, log into Eve, not do anything because I know that it will crash one time, two times and then it will make my computer reboot (did that from the start, that's why I thought it was a hardware problem at first). So now I log on, wait for the two crashes and the reboot and then I'm free to do as I want. It will occasionnally crash when I finish training a skill or getting an eve mail.

There's my sad story, everyone can feel happier now that you've seen worst. Laughing

I can tell ya right now WHY its doing it..

If you alt - tab or some such it will be stable sometimes.. if u have a large bout of system activity (its alttabed because virus checker kicks in for instance...) it will just close.. if u go back into it after an alt tab it WILL be fine... but if you go to do something, can be anything from sitting still mining, to warping, to entering a SG (most commen) to basically ANY gameplay it will CTD. it will ONLY do it because yo have alt tabbed or Window-mode switched etc.

simple cure: dont alt tab. pull ya drones in, get outta the firefight and close the game. do your thing come back in.. THAT will save ya bacon..

just remember alt-tab= somewhere during THAT DAY (between alt tabbing and dropping out of the game completely) it will desktop... i THINK its based some how around either client-server heavy activity (entering SG) or time related...
I cant actually trace this to any degree.. i aint a dev :( wish i was!

But please. devs look into this.. do something about it..

Just a little "background"...

Codemaster28, I've done all the things you mentioned (latest graphics drivers, etc). I have uninstalled, defragged, and reinstalled Eve. The only thing I haven't done (and won't do Wink) is format my hard drive. I have started (in the last 5-6 weeks or so) running Eve in windowed mode and it doesn't help. I also don't run any background programs and have 1Gb memory.

Btw, I have found those logs with the crash info... can they be used to help figure out the problem or is the error sort of generic? Because there is an error message logged for every time I crash and there are QUITE a few of them. Confused

CelticKnight, when you say alt+tab, do you mean literally "alt+tab" or do you mean minimizing Eve in any way? Because I never alt+tab, however, as I run Eve in windowed mode, I have minimized using the button in the top right corner occasionally (like when my anti-virus decides it wants to update). It doesn't crash when my AV updates though.

Before I started running Eve in windowed mode, if I had to minimize, I could never get the client back. It was like the graphics had just shut down and I had to quit Eve and restart anyway. That's why I started running in windowed mode, since my AV updater would crash Eve.

In any case, I hope it gets fixed soon. Confused

I thought it might have something to do with running too many things at once, since often if nothing's happening I hit alt+enter and read the forums until I hear someone scream like a girl on teamspeak, and I think that most of the problems happen when I have my internet browser or iTunes or whatever playing.

I don't usually alt+tab from Eve being fullscreen unless I'm feeling lazy and just have to check one thing, like who's on teamspeak or whatever. The problem I get then, is that when I try to maximise Eve again, it won't open, and then crashes, and I have to shut it down ctrl+alt+del style.

And thanks sb404. I'm glad I don't have it as bad as you :>

I have been having the same problems and I have sent information regarding this to eve-support.

I am in the process of trying to find any pattern and am now going to run log-server so that I can submit more information when I petition directly.
So far, it has happened when
1) I am jumping through stargates
2) I am warping between places
3) I am approaching an object (gate, can, station)
4) I am sat in a station.
.................No pattern there then..Sad

It was, for a couple of days happening to both my characters, even though I have tried absolutley everything that has been suggested.
It didn't happen before cold-war and despite a reformat of my hard drive, a clean install of eve and using settings that I used to use with no problem, it is happening with alarming frequency and when either of the clients crashes, I cannot load the client again for some time. (3-5 minutes).
Today it has only happened with one of my characters, which constantly crashes after a couple of minutes, if it loads at all.

Everyone needs to submit petition/bug reports with dxdiag reports, log files from log server etc. If it continues then there will be no point having two accounts and I'll have to merge the two characters onto one account. Not a threat by any means, just a stark reality that CCP et al will have to anticipate may happen to quite a few people.

Please CCP, look into this at your earliest convenience.

I've a feeling we're losing our connection...

Do you notice that the server sometimes cannot be contacted immediately when the client restarts itself? I have, and I can still browse etc while it's unreachable so it's not my 'net connection, just the one between myself and the cluster. That would explain the 'crashes' because the client will restart itself when it notices you no longer have a connection.

Perhaps their network is under stress with the increase in clients.

If i was you, I would check your HDD for failures, this has happened to me before and my Maxtor 80GB HDD was on its last legs, just a suggestion but it may help.

Probably a sound issue. Happens in certain situations when a certain sound plays(gate activation, drones fireing ect).

I am having the same problem as well. I constantly lose connection whenever I exit warp, undock, or go through a gate to another system with any large number of ships on the other side. It's a frustrating problem, compounded even more so by the silence of CCP's support division on this issue. I've checked for spyware, adware, etc.., no viruses, system is up to date (drivers, etc..) and still the problem persists. I'm beginning to think the Cold War edition introduced more stability issues than it solved. The Exodus client never disconnected me as much as this one does.

I'm also getting random CTD's (no errors), on a frequent basis. I'm going to start running the Logserver and see if I can dig up my own solutions to this dilemma.

For what it's worth,
I totally removed the graphics drivers that I had and reinstalled them again. This had an immediate stabilising effect even though they were the same drivers as before (77.77) though they are not the ones signed by windows
I don't understand how it works with drivers etc but it has worked for me.
I have an nvidia geforce FX 5200, if that helps anyone.

After some investigation, and examination of the error logs (found in your EVE "logs" directory), I discovered a number of errors that the game logged when it crashed. Most of them had to do with graphics, D3D errors, buffer problems, etc.. As Arte suggested, I pulled my graphics driver and reinstalled ForceWare 77.77 for my FX6600. As of last night, I was successfully able to warp in and out several times with a 25 man fleet against a sizeable enemy fleet in 0.0 space. Not a single crash occurred during combat.

Forgot to mention that, but I also have sound disabled, so I don't see how it can be that. Rolling Eyes

Arte, I have a similar graphic card to you, the FX5500, and I also recently uninstalled my driver completely and reinstalled the new 77.77. Still having shutdown problems... grr :)

Also, I don't get any "Connection to server lost" message, and my client doesn't restart itself, so I don't think it's a connectivity issue. Puzzling!

Ok, so I suck. Can someone please give me nice, easy instructions on how to remove my video drivers and then replace them without breaking anything? My videocard is a "Radeon 9500 Pro / 9700" (I don't get why it says both), but I don't know what drivers it's using currently. (The drivers will be horribly out of date though, I'm pretty sure).

I haven't updated the drivers for, like, ever, and I'm worried about how to because apparently if you don't remove the old ones first, it screws up, but I thought that removing the old ones first would screw it up more... Embarassed

hmmm well I'm not the best person to give advice about computers, but I can give you some basics. To find your driver information, if you're using XP:

Right-click My Computer, select the Hardware tab, Device Manager
Click to expand +Display Adapters, you should see your graphic card listed there
Right-click your graphic card, select Properties, Driver tab

This should show you the details of what driver you are using.

As for uninstalling an old driver/reinstalling a new driver, I don't know anything about Radeon cards so I'm not much help there, sorry! It might be as simple as Add/Remove programs, then remove the driver, reboot the computer, then install the new one, but as I said, I am just guessing (that's basically what I did with the nVidia card driver). At least this might help you find your driver info so you can start searching to see if there is a newer driver out there for you. Hope this helps! Very Happy

doesn't work I never have many aplications running. I usually can't pull my drones in cous it happens from fighting and then nothing happens, I can see my drones swirling, my guns shooting, and being shot at, BUT nothing updates. My cap or shield and armor drones wont respond and guns to. Any action from my side. Anyway sometimes it takes a MINUT OR TWO then it all updates and I'm into half armor quite freekyugh or sometimes eve can't handle it and it wil just quit like the other people above me described. sometimes it happens without the lag and it just closes.

I wil try to install new drivers though it might help.

as i have said many times, 99.9% of CTDs in this game has to do with sound and sound drivers.

myself started to get alot of CTD after the last patch again
kinda weird though as i run the game with the sound turned completely off.

An exception has occurred. It has been logged in the log server as exception #51

so why doesnt eve recognize that my sound is turned completely off ingame and crashes due to what seems to be a sound issue.

guys lets only post new ideas on how to solve this problem... i am sure everyone here is crashing from a reason or another mentioned (or maybe a couple).

i did dome readin about ram/vm (which i think is why i crash). diferet ppl say diferet things like seting the max and min at diferet numbers u know. the consensus seem to be 2x to 2.5x of ur phisical ram should be the max and 1.5x the min.

i read somewhere last night that u should leave ur computer on for about 2 days, and give a real hard time on the ram. then do ctrl-alt-del and click on the performance tab. play eve with that open and see how things behave.

what i found weird on mine was: 1) that my peak commit charge was higher then the total physical memory. 2) when the game laged (due to cpu usage) i saw the system cache go really down and the availabel go to like 4mb. i dont reaaly know what this means if theres some memory expets out there give us some light.

sory about the long post Embarassed
