...and, indeed (which is probably what he meant by "etc."), absolutely every program that the computer will LET you shut down, before running the defrag. Ideally, you'd run the defrag program after shutting down Windows, but that's kinda difficult.

Delete your page file (using System Proprties/Advanced Options and then select not to use a page file)
Reboot into Safe Mode
Start/Run/defrag c: /f (this forces a defrag regardless of it being needed or not)

You cannot defrag a volume unless it has at least 15% free space and neither can you defrag a "dirty" disk - run a complete checkdisk on the hard drive first.

Try rebooting in safe-mode and then defragging.

if it goes to a point and then restart .. do what previous posts said. ( if defrag see something changes on hard it will restart - antivirus , something swapping... -) .
but if it gets stuck at a point it's possible that your hdd may developed some bad sectors so .. chkdisk trough.

use diskeeper

much better the the one built into windows, i defrag 4 hard drives (well partitions) in a few hours ... and it does actually defrag it .. goes from about 50% to 2%, its very quick very efficient and it actually give u stats other then % fragmentation ... don't ask where to get it, my step-dad found it and gave it to me, try google i guess

Or use O&O, which is even better than that.

Long story VERY short, I have now had to rebuild two diferent disks in two diferent systems due to this pos. I would never touch it again even with a barge pole, in fact i wouldn't touch it with someone elses barge pole. Wink

Remeber, thats two diferent disks, on two diferent systems, both running a fully patched up XP Pro system, both giving exactly the same error after O&O was installed for a period of time.

2 systems tested, 2 failed.

Even worse, i contact there tech support and they say the disks are dead .... how wrong were they! All it needed was a checkdsk /f in safe mode to get it "useable" to recover the rest of my data. After that a reformat and everything is fine again .... without o&O Evil or Very Mad

Diskeeper is the best paid-for defragger, imo.

It can do automatic shceduled defragging, manual defragging, offline defragging (before windows loads), defragging across networks, can defrag your page file, and will optimize the size of your page and MFT on NTFS HDD's.

Oh, and yeah, never ever try to defrag torrent files if you haven't set your torrent client to allocate disk space before downloading. It will seriously screw with your HDD.

Also, never ever try to defrag while torrenting.

I'm quite a fan of Perfect disk, its fast and nice - pretty cheap too.

But on a more serious note, I'd like to add a disclaimer saying that you follow any of the actions mentioned in those post under your own responsibility :)

Or

Don't cry here if your installation of windows breaks :)
