too many options and it would be too much like msn messenger, but just afk and brb would be cool.

if a system *unintensive* program like msn, aim, trillian, etc can impliment this, why on EARTH would ccp not want to cut their system resources
<sidenote> of course this thread is about the afk indicator (brilliant!!) but it brings up other issues as well - how many people have their buddy lists *filled* and how much does that chug the server when they log in with over 150 buddies to see if they're on or offline? If that was just standard in local chat with the standings/afk/etc info it would not require so much from the server every time people log in *or* query the server for this info.

Edited by: Bedrock on 28/09/2005 22:03:58 I'm not sure how the "buddy" light works in ppl*places. Everytime a buddy logs in, a short lag comes to play. Is it a client issue or a server-side response? I'm assuming the "buddy" light is stored in our side. Either in our settings, if its stored on the server, I see a big problem there. Just like bookmarks, they are stored on the server and are unique to each character, only folders are stored on the client side.
Perhaps this is why CCP has had difficulty? or probably never planned on implementing this kind of feature, because for each person who claims "AFK" status, sends a msg to the server saying afk = 'on'
I think the Idea I'm trying to present is to keep some of this "flaggin" more client-side. Anyways, hopefully one day a Dev will notice this thread and respond with a much appreciated thought.

Sounds like a winner, but in addition, please... PLEASE.... PLEEEEEEEAAASEE... Please... give us options to change the color shown next to our "buddies"...
Examples:
1) Buddies with neutral standings show up as one (user defined) color, positive standings as one, corp members as one, alliance members as one, negative standings as one, war targets as one, etc (this would probably take up too much server load in reality, so option 2 is better) 2) Let us manually select the color associated with each buddy in our list. This could be stored in our preferences file locally much the same way bookmark folders are stored. Since it's a client-based filter, no additional server load is required.. A bit more involved on our part, but I would bargain that most people would consider this worth the effort.
Why is this useful? Well.. those of us fortunate enough to have war declared on us like to add our enemies to our buddy list so we can tell instantly in local if there are any hostiles... would be nice if they didn't show up green like our true friends do... ;)

sound great.
could it be pushed a little bit further, like be able to tell where the afk miners are, so the only safe places would be station, plus you could tell if a ganked had no actions for the last so many mins
