It seems to me that hunting pirates should be a reasonable alternative to mining. But the bounty on most pirates above a 0.5 system is so low that you can't make a decent living hunting pirates...

Prior to the latest patch you could make up to 3 million an hour from bounties without breaking a sweat, solo.

Now its, hrrm... about 1 mill an hour with sweeat.

True, but on the other hand, you can carry a lot more loot back to the station, which can be recycled, which partially makes up for it.

well, 3 million an hour may be a bit on the extreme... but I'd like to see it more in line with strip mining...

I put a lot of work into a nice battle-cruiser..... these piddly little 2500 isk bounties have me back at mining omber... really pathetic...

I've been in .0 space hunting pirates since week two of release. Get that cruiser and go to .0 space. Just be on gaurd, it got a bit tougher, but not by much.

Only a fool would put any real money into a bounty, because the target can decide to get a friend to off him and split the bounty. To get higher bounties, there has to be bounty reform. One proposal is to make targets with negative security status (e.g. -5) have to pay the price of the bounty for using advanced clones upon death. That would be a deterrant to bounty fraud. The current bounty system is not an effective law enforcement method, which IMO is one reason we recently ended up with guns firing at player pirates at all of the gates in Empire space.

Bounties, even in 0.0 systems, aren't that high. However, you can make a ton of money selling rare loot you get. Find a cu vapor or a gauss prototype, and it's like hitting the lottery these days. They can fetch anywhere from 1-7 million each in the trade channel after the patch.

The imbalance is strictly due to godawfull amount of money you can make mining without any serious risk.

And you can't make a decent living? Geez, it's not like you need money in this game for anything other than ammo and maybe that next shiny toy you drool after. (or the new ship and modules if you screw up... but then again, in the 0.5 and better space you can do just fine in a simple frigate that'll cost you 50K with complete equipment)

I would advise the original poster to try at least 0.2 security systems.
As for going 0.0 thats eventually the way to go, but when i did it the first time, i was killed by pirates and sent back to stone age.
Player pirates, not the NPC kind, so do take extra care.

I guess this discussion is about NPC pirates, but for what it's worth I agree completely. I mean the top bounty is something like 11-12M and has been at that level for ages. That in no way matches the losses someone would be risking if they went after that pirate - and the only reason this is that you may as well just give the bounty to the pirate as place it on their heads. I dare say the top pirates wouldn't be silly enough to walk into the recycling chamber but I wouldn't be suprised if plenty of low/mid bounty level ones do. And if the bounties were larger under the current system then the temptation would be larger of course.

Rather than adding gate guns everywhere above 0.0 they should do something like that for bounties. It would allow the pirates to go about their business, but make it financially rewarding for people to try to stop them. It would increase player interaction without 'nerfing' anyone's game.

If something like that were done I would hope they give the pirates a week or so's warning that it will happen, but something desperately needs to be done to make bounties viable. Forcing a pirate to match the bounty to make use of the clone is by far the best way to guarantee getting caught will hurt. If anything ever gets done about this I'll be the first in line to chuck a few M on the top 10 bounties.
